Narcissa was not loving the super cute Christmas bows I put in her hair today 🤣 She IS very interested in the Christmas tree but so far has also been really good about not messing with it. This girl is such a love! She insists on giving kisses or holding on to my shirt to make sure I don’t wander off too far away to pet her. Sis is also doing really well in her crate at night, learning her basic commands and walking pretty well on a loose leash now. It seems people are usually looking for brand new 8 week pld pups when they contact me. But why do I think you should strongly consider an older pup instead? Here are my top 5 reasons.
1. Older pups, at least my older pups, are already crate trained. If you have ever started crate training an 8 week old pup you know it can be a noisy, frustrating process at first. With an older pup, you get to bypass all that and sleep through the night.
2. Which brings us to my second reason. Older pups have much better bladder and bowel control so they don’t need potty breaks as frequently. With a young pup you’d likely be getting up two or three times per night to go outside. With an older pup there’s no need because they can sleep through the night without making a mess.
3. Older pups have longer attention spans and this makes training so much easier. That longer attention span means I get more done in a short training session and they understand things like potty training and leash training quicker. 4. Our older pups have spent a lot of time socializing with our pack of adult dogs. This means they’ve learned a lot about social cues and appropriate behavior with other dogs. This will make going to doggie daycare or the park a much more enjoyable experience for you both. 5. Older pups might take a little longer to fully adjust to a new home BUT they are keen to bond and form relationships so they tend to bond really closely to their new families as they get comfortable. 6. And one more bonus…these older pups have had experience with baths, brushing, nail trims and clippers so they are aware of what to expect and what’s expected from them. They behave really well for grooming at this point and that makes your life and the groomer’s easier.

Putting together a little treat for the hounds on this cold day! They don’t want to spend much time outside today because it’s like 14 degrees 🥶 soo I needed to give them something to occupy their time while they’re chillin in the house and in their crates. I don’t want them to be bored but I’ve got a bunch of stuff to do around the house today and you know I’m not getting it done with a dozen puppies and a bunch of adult dogs milling around my feet🤣 and yes.. I said a dozen puppies…there are still several looking for their 🏠 if you’re interested. But anyway.. Kongs…filled with dog safe peanut butter, sweet potato mash, dog treats and banana today. Kongs are always going to be my go to dog toy. Literally every one of my dogs has one. As a doodle breeder you might wonder why I have a litter of standard poodles right now. Well, there are lots of reasons poodles are great. 1. They are just crazy smart. That coupled with their eager to please nature makes them super trainable and really amazing at learning lots of new things. There’s a reason circus dogs were usually poodles back in the day. They can learn to do pretty much anything you want.

4. So many of my doodle customers need allergy friendly dogs and for some even a multigen doodle just isn’t allergy friendly enough…but poodles usually are. We’ve talked a little about the benefits of older pups vs 8wk old pups this week but here’s a great example. Eloise had just had a bath, was super chill for that, had been towel dried and then got her nails trimmed. Not once did she try to escape the bath or fuss about her nails. Through no fault of her own, Francesca is back with us. Her family’s other dog just REALLY wanted to be an only dog and was not happy to have a new little sister. Sooo she’s back here hanging out while she waits for her second chance.

Hard to believe that Rip is the last Maggie/Dobby pup I will ever have since Maggie is retiring😳. A little end of an era moment here. He’s pretty flipping cute though right? Loves playing in the leaves, getting belly rubs and cuddling up after a good long playtime with his doggie friends. He is a big fan of treats and dinnertime too. Does great in his crate over night, is learning his leash skills and basic manners.. he is just an all around perfect pup.
