Magura Elkhounds of Utah We have a beautiful purebred elkhound named Siff who should be expecting puppies soon. We are very dedicated to producing healthy, well-socialized dogs.

Merry Christmas from Siff to you! We hope you had a great year, and we're hoping for an even better one next year!

The worst possible thing just happened. I came in to check on the puppy, and she wasn't acting the same. She was wobbly and twitching. Concerned, I tried to get her to latch onto Siff, but she just wouldn't suck. We pulled out our bottles and tried to get some food into her, but she started having seizures and wouldn't nurse. We tried everything, but the seizures got worse and more frequent until she died. I tried CPR, but I couldn't bring her back. I'm so sorry.

We've been trying to be so careful. We've been trying to check on her often, but not so often that we were stressing out Siff. I've been making sure she was latching and eating. I worry that Siff wasn't producing enough milk, but I could hear the pup drinking and she was latching in her own. I'm not sure what we did wrong, or what else we could have done. We're heartbroken.

Mom and baby are doing great! Currently, the puppy is being called Samos. My son named her.

Some better pictures of the baby. Siff is being a great mom! Both of them are eating and sleeping now.

And... It's a girl!!! It turns out, there is only one. She's home now and nursing. She was a little cold at first and wouldn't latch, but she's doing much better.

Siff is being a great mom, and more pictures to follow.

Siff is currently at the vet's. They examined her, and everything seemed to be fine, but to be safe, they've induced her and they're going to keep her there until she delivers the first puppy, just to make sure there aren't any problems. Then she'll come home and deliver the rest here. So today is definitely the day!

Oof. What a week. 🙂

This dog, I swear. 🤷‍♀️

After maybe ten minutes of irregular contractions, she decided that was enough. She had maybe one or two in the next hour and then went to sleep. If there aren't any changes by the time the vet opens, we're planning on taking her in. I don't think anything is wrong, but we want to be sure. I can still feel puppy movement (I'm pretty sure), and her discharge is still clear and odorless. She doesn't seem distressed. She still hasn't eaten since the night before last, so I think she's close. Just taking her time.

And I'm impatient.

And honestly, inexperienced. We're trying our hardest to be responsible breeders and I've read everything I can find online, but this is my first time closely monitoring a dog who's about to give birth, and there is conflicting information everywhere. My last experience with a pregnant dog was nearly twenty years ago. Dorothy (Ridge's owner) has been a great help, but she's also far away. So forgive us. We're learning a lot, but we're also still figuring things out. Thanks for your prayers and interest! We really appreciate the support.

Day 2. After a few hours of sleep, I'm feeling much better. After talking to Dorothy (who owns the father and is basically my mentor in all this) she reassured us that unless her discharge is green (which means the placentas are separating), Siff is probably fine. She has not had any green or red discharge yet.

Siff is exhibiting the same behaviors as yesterday, so it should be tonight. I think she was basically having Braxton Hicks contractions yesterday. If she hasn't had pups by morning, Dorothy says to take her into the vet because then she would be two days past her due date and we would want to make sure everything is ok. So, praying and fingers crossed for tonight!

Update: Siff actually calmed down last night around 8:30 and suddenly wanted food again and then went to sleep. She'd wake up occasionally pant, lick herself, pace a little, and then go back to sleep. Today she doesn't want to leave the whelping box area and she woke up at 6 restless again. She hasn't actually started contractions still, and she doesn't seem to be in any distress. We may take her in this morning, just to get checked out and make sure everything is ok.

Ok, apparently we were a little over excited. We just called the vet because Siff hasn't contracted yet and we were getting worried. Apparently, the fluid that came out wasn't actually her water breaking. It was more of dripping rather than a gush, and it wasn't accompanied by a bag, so the vet said that we're probably just getting over excited and it was just lubrication. So, we're still waiting. Her belly is hanging lower and the pups are still moving, but she really hasn't started having contractions yet. We're probably in for a while still. 🙂

Water just broke!

Edit: just kidding, I guess. Apparently that was actually lubrication. It seemed like a lot, but I think we were just over excited.

Siff is in Stage 1 of labor. She refused breakfast this morning, vomited a little, has been pacing and restless, and had shown nesting behaviors. This stage can last between 6 to 12 hours, though it can go up to 24. If it goes past 24, it is recommended you call a vet. She's been in this stage for about 8 hours. This stage ends when her cervix is completely dilated. We'll update again when something changes.

Yesterday, Siff's temperature dropped. Usually, that means they'll start labor in 24 to 48 hours. I just got home from work this morning, and she is restless and really wants to go out and hide beneath the porch (which is not normal behavior). I'll keep you updated. 😁

Siff is doing well tonight. On an exciting note, we just felt puppy movement a few minutes ago! We'll try and keep these updates more frequent. Siff could go anytime, but we're hoping she waits a little closer to her due date. We'll be monitoring her temperature twice a day. It usually drops a degree or two before they go into labor.

Siff's due date is six days away. We haven't taken her in for an ultrasound yet (we've had a crazy week), but I'm not sure it's even necessary at this point. She's getting bigger all the time and she started producing milk last week. She could go any day starting Monday. I'll try and give daily updates. Thank you for your continued interest and prayers!

We're two weeks from Siff's due date today, and things look promising. As you can see, her mammary tissue has been developing and she is definitely getting rounder. She's also had a lot of discharge, which is common for pregnancy.

For those who don't know, this is our fourth try with her, and she's had a couple of pseudo pregnancies, so I'm cautious to fully declare pregnancy. Last time, she even produced milk!

On that note, unless I feel movement by next week (which you should be able to within the last two weeks), we'll probably be taking her in for an x-ray next week, just to be sure. There are other benefits of x-ray, including an accurate puppy count which will help us know when she's done during labor so we can be aware if there are problems. Thank you for your continued interest and prayers!

Just a quick update. It's now been a month since we bred Siff. There are very few signs of pregnancy within the first four weeks, so we don't know for sure if she's pregnant yet.

Due to our past experience with ultrasounds (not fun trips) and how much money we've already spent on this particular breeding, we are just going to keep an eye on her and look for signs of pregnancy. Ideally, it will be pretty obvious in the coming weeks. If there's any question, we'll do an x-ray closer to the due date (which will also let us know how many puppies she'll be expecting.) Thank you for you patience and interest.
