Horses are some of the most intuitive animals on earth. They bond with us deeply, are in-tune with our feelings, and can even gain comfort from our touch. Massage takes the power of touch to a new level, and your equine partner will feel how much you love them.

When your horse’s body feels good, her mind feels good, too. She can do the activities she loves (even if that’s mostly snoozing in the sun and munching on hay). She can move pain-free. Massage is one of the best ways to ensure your pony feels her best physically and mentally every day.

How can you tell if your equine partner needs a massage? Look out for shortened strides, a sore back, stiffness and trouble bending, bucking during transitions, stumbling, or changes in demeanor that may be signs of underlying physical tension.

Most Montana dogs are very active, and long hikes, swims, and fetch sessions are commonplace. But the next one or two days, you may notice your previously-spunky dog moving a bit slower. Recovering from intense exercise is a lot easier for the body with a therapeutic massage. Your dog will thank you!

Sometimes our senior pets age so gradually that we don’t really notice along the way. One day, we wake up and our “pup” has a lot more grey hair than brown, is walking more gingerly, and is sleeping a lot more. But that doesn’t mean it’s too late to help him age easier. Massage can be started when your pet is any age, even once they’re already a senior.

Chronic pain can afflict our pets the same way it afflicts humans, except they can’t tell us where it hurts. Massage therapists specially trained to treat dogs and horses provide a bridge between what our animals are feeling and what we can do to help them.

Though massage techniques vary between canine and equine patients, the history of animal massage is intertwined. Once equine massage became more well known, canine massage soon followed suit.

Before equine massage because a more widely-respected therapy, it was often called a “rub down.” In the 1970s, the U.S. Equestrian Team formalized their use of massage… and never looked back. Neither will you!

Did you know canine massage dates back to ancient times? Even Julius Caesar reportedly traveled with his own massage therapist, who also treated his war dogs. Egyptian hieroglyphics also depict animal healers using massage on dogs, horses, and other animals. Massage continues to be a powerful method of healing to this day.

Two words horse owners hate to hear: “stall rest.” Not only are those words typically accompanied by higher vet bills, they can result in new bad habits like pacing and cribbing when horses are confined and under the weather. Regular therapeutic massages not only help improve your horse’s physical state, it helps him stay in a better mental state during stall rest.

Massage isn’t just for people! Whether they’re athletes in their prime, aging seniors with aching muscles, or simply your favorite hiking/trail partners, dogs and horses LOVE (and need) regular massages to stay healthy. Why?
- Increased flexibility and strength of joints
- Lower injury rate due to enhanced muscle tone and range of motion
- Decreased muscle soreness from athletic training
- Increased circulation to release endorphins (natural pain killers)
- Decreased stress, blood pressure, and inflammation

The leaves are turning, the weather is changing, and our animals have noticed. When seasons change, horses and dogs can have corresponding changes in health and behavior. If you notice a shift, consider a therapeutic massage to help reset their systems and deal with nature’s transitions in a healthy way.

I recently had the chance to bring one of my former horses (that I’d sold years ago) back to Montana. Seeing her step off the trailer in poor physical condition was heartbreaking, but I knew that proper vet care, farrier visits, and bodywork could bring her back to health. In only a few months of routine bodywork (and broader care improvements), she’s full of energy with light back in her eyes!

“Work horse” is more than a catch phrase. For many folks in Montana, horses are required to get the job done. Whether you’re gathering cattle or hauling an Elk back to camp, you have to be able to rely on your horse day-in, day-out. When your horse is critical to the job, therapeutic massage isn’t optional.
