Raising a 12 week old puppy is A LOT of work. But there are plenty of things you can do to make it easier.
1. Crate training- limit your puppy’s freedom to even begin practicing behaviors you don’t want in the future
2. Knowing how often he needs to potty. When he comes out of the crate-> straight outside. After playtime? Straight outside. Before back in the crate? Outside
3. Focus on his needs while he is out. This includes engaging play, exploring new environments to desensitize the world, little bits of training ans building value in me, confidence building, and passive relaxation practice. All things to actively build a well mannered adult dog 4. Anytime I cannot 100% supervise him, he’s in the crate to prevent the praceice of bad behaviors. This alwo encourages much needed nap time.

What other puppy questions do you have?

Several people back in Maryland still reach out to me all the time SO, For anyone back in Maryland who is a previous client needing a refresher or anyone who wishes I was able to help them with their dog now… I do offer virtual training AND at less than half the cost of in-person training.

There are SO many things that can be helped by a conversation and some guidance. Reach out if you’d like some help or just general advice on anything dog related. Let’s talk.

Book here: https://tidycal.com/caylen/virtualtraining

If it is not something we can work through online, I will be honest with you. I can even personally recommend another trainer in the area to do in person training with you.

**Things like reactivity, resource guarding or aggression are always better worked in person.**

A few client updates that made my day recently!

A highly reactive German Shepherd who can now enjoy walks and even his owner stopping to talk with a neighbor without freaking out and lunging to bite them…. Even being comfortable enough to LAY DOWN! HUGE!

A little 4.5mo puppy who is making fantastic progress after just one session. Learning to relax, walk with his owners and not eat the rugs.

And a little doodle who used was over excited on the leash and would pull her owner over towards other dogs now walking peacefully beside her.

CHEERS TO MY CLIENTS WHO DO THE WORK! You all make my job so enjoyable and I am here to cheer you on!

Welcome Chamberlain! Chamberlain is an 8mo golden doodle who is here to learn some manners and basic obedience. His owners need him off leash trained to comfortably roam the property and not pull them down the road on walks. He is an absolutely lovely dog and I am so excited to work with him. He’s extremely bright and has a great temperament overall. Follow along for the next 4 weeks as he becomes an outstanding citizen of society.

Crate Training Made Easy

11/08/2023

Don’t be fooled into thinking just because you’ve trained your dog for a few weeks, they will never make any mistakes and will always listen to you.

You must upkeep the standard of behavior you expect from your dog so they are clear on what is expected of them at any given time.

The second you begin to allow more and more little things is the second your dog goes back to those larger problem behaviors.

It is always going to go back to the relationship with the owner and what the dog thinks it can get away with in your presence.

Training is a way of life and we do it to provide an understanding for the dog of how to live with us. THEN because of that, we are able to allow them SO much freedom they deserve after setting the relationship up for success.

What did you do with your dog today??

08/08/2023

Coming from a dog trainer, and someone who’s DEFINITELY a little bit high strung about the safety, care and handling of their dog… trust me when I say, “I know how much peace of mind means when you leave your pets with someone who isn’t you”.

The pet care industry is massive and it seems the bigger it gets, the more problems unfold for these facilities. I prefer to keep things as enjoyable and intimate as possible for my clients and their dogs.

Before I became a trainer I worked at a large boarding and daycare facility for years and there’s a reason I have never, not once, boarded my dog at a facility like that.

So, is this opportunity only for people and the dogs I’ve trained? You bet your ass it is. It’s my very own small community of well behaved dogs that I welcome into my home. If you want in on this high quality service, your dog better come with some high quality manners, but don’t worry; I offer that part too 😜

Exchanges like this are my absolute favorite! I worked with this VIP client for about a year from when their puppy was 4 months old to just passed the 1 year mark. We all know training is not linear and these ladies REALLY trusted the process and followed every instruction I gave them.

Even through that threenager (6-9 month) period we all know is a very trying time for the dog and owners, they really stuck through.

Now, they are enjoying a very polite 1 year old dog who is calm in the home, walks well on leash, and is fully off leash trained.

And for ME, that means I get to enjoy boarding him right along side my own dog. He gets so much freedom now because he simply makes great choices.

These are my favorites types of clients. The ones you really bond with over a long period of time. You watch them grow as owners and people. You see the dog succeed and the relationship grow! Then, you get to reep the benefits of that lovely, well trained dog when the owners go away in vacation and it’s an absolute pleasure having their dog stay with you. ♥️

I’m not really sure where this myth started. The whole idea that dogs will somehow just “grow out of it”. Entirely, 100% false.

When your 2 year old dog still has “puppy tendencies” it’s because you didn’t train anything else.

Dogs will, well…. Be dogs. We have to teach them how to live in our world.

A huge piece of that is properly managing the animal in your house to set them up for success.

We can’t just expect them to figure it all out by themselves without clear communication.

Management and training (for owner and dog 😜) are essential to creating a polite, well behaved dog and a relationship with you that thrives.

Submissive peeing can’t be and shouldn’t be corrected.

It’s involuntary. You and the other humans MUST change the way in which you interact with the dog in order to see a change in your sog’s response.

01/08/2023

With teeny, tiny, baby puppies you shouldn’t be focusing on obedience. *GASP* I know. What? No way. Yes, way.

It is far more important to desensitize your dog to this crazy world we live in than to teach them tricks at this stage.

Let your puppy be a puppy.

Let them experience everything, but be smart about it.

No dog parks, no random dog or human greetings.

Build engagement and value in YOU.

Keep a routine and crate train as soon as possible.

If you’re correcting your dog… multiple times when they are learning something…

If your dog is “getting it wrong” multiple times when they are learning something….

This is simply information to YOU.

You must make things simpler.

Inside turns and auto sits are FOLLOWED by your dog learning and understanding leash pressure.
Take your time. Add food if it helps your dog.
Build distractions gradually. Stop going for walks.
Teach your dog HOW to walk with you. It's far more beneficial for both of you than going on another walk with your dog pulling and reacting to everything just to feel like you "did something" with them. Work them. Teach them. Guide them.
