Building Amazing Canine & Human Teams, One Family At A Time
When you meet me, these are the myths I will bust for you: 1) Dog Whisperers are magic. It’s something unique that’s born. >>> WRONG Good training is a hard science with research-based, predictable results and that means I can teach it to YOU 2) If someone else trains your dog, it won't work for you >>>WRONG It's a language skill set. My own personal dogs will work for ANYONE who speaks their language and so will client dogs. 3) This dog is stubborn >>>WRONG Canines are complex and have sophisticated learning needs just as humans do. Only a limited trainer would call a dog stubborn when they haven't unlocked that canine's path to learning. 4) This dog is too old >>>WRONG Passion for learning and feeling a sense of accomplishment doesn't fade as a canine ages. 5) This dog is dominant >>>WRONG Dominate dog mythology is antiquated and was based on wolves, not domesticated dogs. There is no such thing as a dominant personality, however there are dominant behaviors. This nuance in terms is important to understand. Dominant dog beliefs can lead to frustration and in extreme cases, abuse. ***DOG TRAINERS DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW*** This is an unlicensed and unregulated industry with limited standardizations and common terms. The only thing two dog trainers can seem to agree on is the third one is doing everything wrong. HOW TO FIND A GOOD TRAINER: 1) Ask your Veterinarian 2) Ask your rescue group 3) Ask your friends who own dogs 4) When you see a well mannered dog, ask who trained it 5) Ask the trainers you meet: a) Where did you go to school and are you a certified professional trainer? Did you work hands-on with dogs at school? b) Can I talk to your clients? c) Can you show me your dog?
A good dog trainer must not ONLY love dogs, they must also LOVE people because the people are part of the dog's team ! If a dog trainer has no passion for educating humans (including the young ones!) find another trainer. Dog-Human team training can bring up emotions that can impede learning if your trainer has not earned your trust. Think of it like a counseling relationship. Vulnerability and honesty are required from both parties. If you aren't feeling that, find another trainer.
There are no bad dogs. There are dogs just being dogs in the human world. There are dogs with limitations. There are dogs with born and learned wiring issues, just like with people.
💖May you and your dog(s) be amazing and loving family members to each other every day!💖 --Phaedra
