BCHA Board members aren't afraid of the dirty work! With all these cats we are going through litter faster than we can scoop! We wouldn't expect our awesome volunteers to do anything we aren't willing to do ourselves!

We are running low on litter! If you are out buying gifts this season, can you pick up a box or two of scoopable litter for our cats? 🎁

To Checkers FUREVER family,

My name is John.
I tried to adopt Checkers on November 7th, 2024. I had every intention of making my home her forever home. I can't tell you just how difficult it was for me to make the decision to bring her back to the Humane Association.

Checkers is a very, very loving dog. She is also very intelligent. She will try to tell you when she has to go potty, but sometimes it takes her some time to go, but she is responsive to positive feedback and treats when she does a good job and goes. Her bark also has a bit of a whine in it when she is trying to communicate that she needs to go out. Pay attention when she uses it sometimes she will walk towards the door when she has the need to go.

Checkers understands "sit" "wait" when coupled with a hand sign for stop, and "okay" with a tap on the end of her nose and mouth when she us allowed to eat. Doing this will calm her down when trying to feed her. She also understands "easy" when you are trying to give her a treat. Sometimes she will still lunge for a treat, but if you pull your hand back and repeat the word "easy" she will very gently take the treat from you. It might also help to show part of the treat between your thumb and forefinger as she will not want to bite you. She is not aggressive that way with her people.

Checkers was learning to fetch and she would to a point in the house. She loves tennis balls, bones, antlers, and puzzle toys that make her work for the treats inside. I included a orange rubberized toy that she really likes.

I also included a crate with a comfy bed that fits inside. Her water and food bowl as well.

Checkers is very much a cuddler and she will chew on her toys when made available. She is however still very much a puppy. You will have to watch her, as her hound nose will get her in trouble if any kind of food is left unattended. She has a tendency to pick up shoes and place them places. Sometimes she will bury things in the couch, but she does not seem to chew on shoes. If toys are given to her she will gravitate towards them, but remember she is still puppy.

Checkers plays well with other dogs, when alone with other dogs outside. She did become jealous of my dog of 10 years. Sadie is a female dog and she was very tolerant of Checkers behavior, but she did not assert herself very often, so Checkers would take advantage of that with toys and human attention.

I ask you to please understand the challenges that Checkers may have. She does get separation anxiety and it manifests itself in some barking and potentially getting into things that she shouldn't. She has chewed up a dog bed when left alone.

Life circumstances have changed and I'm not able to give Checkers what she so deserves.

Please if you choose Checkers understand that she is an excellent dog who simply needs lots of loving & attention. I failed her in being able to provide everything that she needs & truly deserves. Please make her a part of your Forever family!! Goodbye sweet Checkers. 😥

Neptune 💘🐶💘 and Pluto 💖🐶💖 got some much needed play and chase time today thanks to Jeri, one of our dog volunteers at the shelter!

We can't thank her enough for making this happen!

As you can see by the pictures they had a blast!!!!!!

Both boys are available for adoption!
7 month old Australian Shepherd mixes.

And both super super sweet!
Not a mean bone in their bodies.
