Maeve is a 1-year-old terrier mix that loves life! She came to HAP from a high-intake shelter in Louisiana when they no longer had space for her. Maeve spent nearly 2 weeks in foster with a local trainer, so we could get more information on her in a home environment. She absolutely LOVES to play and will happily toss around any toy you give her. After some exercise, training, or playtime, she is ready to curl up next to you for some cuddles! Maeve is both treat and toy-motivated, making her a fast learner and eager to please. She knows basic commands, walks well with a harness, and is already crate-trained. Maeve LOVES other dogs and would thrive with a doggy sibling to play with. However, she would need a home without cats.

Meet Smokey and Bandit, our 2-year-old sisters! These girls came to HAP from a hoarding case, so this has been a big change for them. Smokey is the more outgoing of the two, though she can be shy at first. She enjoys playing, so she can usually be won over by some toys! Bandit tends to be more of the observer, she likes to hang back on the sidelines while her sister takes the lead. After some time, they are both super sweet girls who love to hang out with their people friends! Smokey and Bandit both do well with other cats, but we recommend they go to a home with no dogs and no children, as they prefer a calmer environment!

Meet another pet looking for their forever home through one of our shelter partners, Humane Animal Partners, in Delaware!

Ghost is a playful and energetic 2-year-old Husky/Malamute mix! Ghost came to HAP when his owner was incarcerated and could no longer care for him. In his previous home, he lived with a child and another dog. While most huskies tend to be stubborn with new people, that is not our boy Ghost! He loves to cuddle up with his people and will lay his head right on your lap! While he is not very treat-motivated, ear and belly scratches are a sure way to win this boy's heart. He loves to be outside where he can keep an eye on all the activity around the shelter. Ghost is a strong boy that loves to walk and is learning leash manners while walking. In typical Husky fashion, he likes to do things on his own time frame and likes graze on his food throughout the day. He is a very opinionated guy who has no problem letting you know when he would like some attention by ‘talking’ to you or ‘singing.’ Due to his vocal talent, he would likely do best in a single-family house or townhome!

Today is The Seeing-Eye Guide Dog Anniversary! It is an appreciation for all of the dogs who act as their owners’ eyes and ears. The devotion and taught abilities of these particular canines keep them safe and enable them to operate as fully functional persons. Today is meant to recognize the school that educates them. Seeing-eye dogs go through extensive training to be able to safely traverse the environment and all of its hazards for their person. That is why they are so worthy of this recognition.

Elmira does have very early stage kidney disease, which can be common in aging pets. Although this is currently being managed with diet, this is often the reason she is overlooked. Luckily, our fantastic veterinarians can help manage her health, so if you think she could be a good addition to your home, don't let that deter you! Read more about Elmira here:

Elmira will steal your heart away with one meow! She is a 7-year-old mature beauty with a kitten heart. Elmira came to HAP when she was found as a stray, but it was clear this girl had lived in a home and socialized with people. She adores being pet, usually following you around waiting to be loved. Elmira is also a chatty girl and enjoys talking with humans, she even has the sweetest meow! In addition to her loving personality, Elmira is quite the laid-back lady, often enjoying a nice afternoon nap or some snacks. Elmira is fairly tolerant of being handled, held, and snuggled. She will use her big girl voice paired with a love tap to let you know if you've crossed her boundaries too far, though this is rare. She has so much life left in her, begging to find her forever home.

Happy National Peanut Butter Day! Today is a day to treat your dog with peanut butter.
Here are some ideas on how to celebrate:
-Give your dog a small taste of unsalted, low-sugar peanut butter (never give them anything with xylitol, also called birch sugar)
-Make homemade peanut butter treats for your dog
-Use a wooden spoon coated with peanut butter to teach your dog leash etiquette
-Give your dog a Peanut Butter Kong

Our VCA Animal Hospitals are partnered with many shelters and rescues in the area. We hope to start regularly sharing some of the pets with those partners, who are looking for forever homes. Check out this really handsome bonded pair who are with Humane Animal Partners. One of our associates actually had the pleasure of meeting them and talked about how lovely they were. There's always a bit of getting to really know the pets who end up in shelters, but here is what HAP had to say so far:

Leroy and Lincoln are 6-year-old Catahoula mix brothers! They were born and raised on a farm, where they were trained to hunt together. Despite being at the shelter, these guys are just happy to meet new people! Leroy is a total sweetheart, while Lincoln is the more playful brother. They are very attached to one another, so we hope to find them a forever home together. Both pups are already house-trained, know basic commands, and walk well on a leash!
