I’ve been hearing from soooo many people lately that they have become victims of scammers claiming to have puppies available.
➡️How to protect yourself-
1. Do a Google image search of the picture of the puppy someone is trying to sell. If it appears on multiple websites that’s a 🚩
2. Look for communication methods beyond email. There should be a phone number and location listed. E-mail / txt is often the preferred method of communication to keep track of conversations. Breeders can be very busy taking care of puppies and not answer a call. However, a reputable breeder certainly will make the time for a phone call.
3. A reputable breeder should have a website, though many hobby breeders do not. Be cautious of purchasing from social media platforms and broad-named websites. When COVID hit 2 years ago I was absolutely inundated with inquiries for puppies (via my mom’s business, Cove Angels Breeding ). Suddenly in the last year and especially now, there seem to be so many breeders! There is nothing wrong with a hobby breeder by any means… I’m one! You should be able to see the puppies in person and visit within the home. Home visits are welcome here!
4. NEVER SEND MONEY WITHOUT SPEAKING TO SOMEONE / SEEING THE PUPPY! Beware of a Venmo or zelle request not connected to the same phone number or listed only to a random email address.
5. Ask questions! Breeders won’t get mad at you for asking a question and there’s nothing too silly.
6. Call a breeder of a similar breed and ask for a referral. I get calls all the time for the wrong breed but it’s usually for something like a cavipoo or maltipoo and we’ll I just don’t have a clue.
That’s all for top of mind at the moment… I’m just so sick of people getting scammed!
