“My dog is too stubborn to be trained.”
“She’s smart—just evil.”
“He’s sweet but… not exactly gifted.”

Oh, believe me—I’ve heard it all.
And here’s the truth: your dog isn’t broken, hopeless, or plotting world domination (probably).
They just need training that makes sense to them.

I don’t train dogs by overpowering them—I train them by speaking dog. We use positive reinforcement, science, treats, and play to build real behavior change and a better bond between you and your pup.

So whether your dog is a wild child, a nervous wreck, or a little too clever for their own good… I’ve got you.

Let’s turn “I don’t think my dog can be trained” into
“Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

We Are PRO Fetch!

Lately, there’s been talk about why you should stop playing fetch with your dog. It reminds us of the old myth that playing tug makes dogs aggressive—both of which are completely false!

Fetch, like tug, is an amazing way to engage with your dog, build their focus, and use their natural instincts in a structured, positive way. In our training programs, we use both as high-value rewards, powerful tools for motivation, and fantastic bonding activities.

Here’s why we’re PRO Fetch:
✔️ Mental & Physical Exercise – It’s not just about running; fetch requires problem-solving, impulse control, and coordination.
✔️ A Fantastic Training Reward – Many high-drive dogs love to chase, making fetch a perfect reinforcer for obedience, sport training, and more.
✔️ Builds Relationship & Engagement – Fetch isn’t just about throwing a ball; it’s about playing together, improving recall, and strengthening trust.
✔️ Provides an Outlet for Natural Instincts – Dogs want to chase, catch, and retrieve—fetch gives them a productive way to do so.

Just like tug, fetch is only a problem if played with poor structure (e.g., over-arousal with no impulse control). But when used correctly, it’s an enriching, fun, and powerful tool for training and play.

So keep playing fetch, keep having fun, and don’t let myths keep you from giving your dog the interactive, rewarding experiences they deserve!

Rango is excelling with his reactivity towards dogs, strangers, and loud vehicles during his board and train with us. Rango had a bad experience at a different training facility that left him with fear reactivity, and then he went through our in-home reactivity program which helped him immensely. However, he was still struggling with trusting strangers and reacting to dogs that startled him, so he came to stay with us for a customized board and train to overcome these persistent issues... and he has! Yay Rango! ❤️🐾

Our newest dog, Emma, practicing "Place". She is our 7th personal pup 🐶

As the owners of a larger than "normal" amount of dogs, what we focus on training our own dogs has changed over time. We often have less time for each individual dog, especially when we also have client dogs, so we focus on practicing and upkeeping a few of the most useful skills:

- "Wait": at kennel doors, while leashing, while another dog passes by, before jumping out of a vehicle, etc
- "Load Up": into a car seat or crate, depending on vehicle
- "Place": All around super useful skill with multiple dogs
- "Here": We never stop reinforcing recalls
- Leash walking: Doesn't need to be perfect, but we do need to walk multiple dogs together
- Name Game: It helps for the dogs to know which one we're addressing.

Honestly that's about it! We do more obedience cues, impulse control, and tricks for enrichment and fun, but when it comes down to what we use every day with 7 dogs plus clients, that covers what we realistically cover with our own dogs every day. 🐾

What about you? What do you find is your most used every day skill?

Why We Love the Belgian Malinois (and Why They’re Not for Everyone)

If you’ve spent any time around working dogs, you’ve probably heard of the Belgian Malinois. Often called the “Ferrari of the dog world,” these dogs are fast, intense, and incredibly driven. We work with and love the Malinois, but we rarely recommend them as pets.

So, what makes the Malinois so special?

✅ Unmatched Work Ethic – Bred for work, these dogs don’t tire easily. Whether it’s protection sports, detection work, or high-level obedience, they thrive when they have a job.
✅ Loyal and Bonded – A well-trained Malinois is deeply loyal to their handler and eager to work as a team.
✅ Athleticism and Intelligence – They excel in nearly every dog sport, from agility and dock diving to PSA and French Ring. Their speed, power, and ability to problem-solve are second to none.

But here’s the catch—these traits that make them incredible working dogs also make them extremely difficult pets for the average home.

⚠️ Not a "Train and Forget" Dog – Malinois don’t just need a walk around the block. They require structured training, engagement, and mental stimulation every single day—often for hours.
⚠️ Mouthy, Intense, and Over-the-Top – Many Malinois bite hard, chase anything that moves, and can be destructive without proper management. They can also be very dog selective and dog reactive.
⚠️ Genetics Matter – A well-bred Malinois is not just an "energetic German Shepherd." They were developed for serious work and require experienced handlers.

We love the Malinois because they are unmatched in ability, but they are not the right dog for most homes. If you’re interested in this breed, be honest about your lifestyle, experience, and ability to provide the structure they need. A bored, under-stimulated Malinois is a disaster waiting to happen.

If you're considering one, reach out to trainers and experienced handlers first! The right fit makes all the difference—for you and the dog.

Be cautious of your dog overheating on suddenly warm days like today. Our dogs are acclimated to cooler weather and not adjusted to the heat yet. Many dogs will still have a winter undercoat. Watch your dog's behavior for exhaustion! 🌞

About Elizabeth Sandoval CTDI

Choice. Relationship. Consent. These may not be the first words you think of when you think of dog training. To be honest, "animal trainer" may not be the best word to describe all of what I do. I am also a coach and a teacher for both humans and animals, a relationship facilitator, and an animal communicator. I help people understand their animals so that they can enrich their pets lives, teach them skills to cooperate and live in harmony, and communicate to them with kindness.

For the last decade, I have dedicated my career to studying and specializing in a force-free, relationship based approach that puts choice and consent at the forefront of all animal interactions. Positive reinforcement training is more than just adding a few treats and rewards; it's a mindset.

I do not teach you how to "dominate" your dog or make them "obey" your every command. There is no magic and little imagination in leash popping, pushing an animal around, or intimidating them into compliance.

Instead, I want to teach you how to interact with and train your pets so that they WANT to engage with you and perform for you, even in the most impossibly distracting environments. There is no unpleasant consequence for the animal for not participating; only pleasant and fun consequences when they choose to engage. The magic happens when they make that choice, over and over again.
