Does taking your dog out on a walk feel like a fight? A battle of wills? Where they think it’s a fun game to drag you around to every bush, person, or squirrel they see? You’re not alone in your struggles and it makes sense if you think about it.
Dogs have spent the last 20,000 years running around being our hunting buddies, sled dogs (where they were supposed to pull!), and protectors. It wasn’t until very recently that walking nicely on a leash became important. And genetically, dogs were NOT prepared for it. But now, the ability to walk politely on leash has a large impact on both the dog’s and person’s quality of life.
Charlie, the goldendoodle, has a huge zest for life and could drag his people just about anywhere. Jim, the hooman, has enough back issues as it is without Charlie adding to them. The result was neither of them going on any walks.
In our training we worked a lot to improve Charlie’s self control, focus around distractions, and loose leash walking. So now, as you can see, Charlie can still have the mental stimulation of new sights, sounds, and smells that he craves, and both he and Jim can get the exercise they need. Good job, Jim and Charlie!
So if you feel like you’re struggling on your walks, take a deep breath and get to training! Because walking politely on leash IS possible!

Saker says hi! 👋 It was his 8th birthday on Sunday!! We celebrated by going on a bike ride (he loves to run), and having an over abundance of treats and cuddles. What do you do to celebrate your pup’s birthday 🎂?

A common way to train a dog to alert us that they need outside for a potty break, is training them to ring a bell. Mac has a super fancy electronic doorbell that he has very enthusiastically learned to push. We understood the first time, Mac!
