Working these two tonight. Seeing them here like this makes is hard to believe that they were once not even able to THINK they’d be this comfortable together.
His story is just beginning!! More to come but it’s this handsome boy’s Gotcha Day!!!!
He was urgent and no doubt incorrectly marked as “potentially dangerous” by the shelter he was in and today, after a month in foster care with me, he is going to his forever!
Miss Carly loves you sweet boy and couldn’t be happier for you and your family!!!!
For those who have been following the journey with my own dogs, I have been working with them still! Vader has the worst case of dog acne I have ever seen from his muzzle, which is why he is in the cone. It needs to heal and he needs to not be able to scratch it or rub his face on everything to itch it.
Because he cannot be muzzled, I work them by keeping one crated and allowing the other to sniff through the crate. This allows for barrier as well as providing space to back away should they feel the need due to fear or heightened stress. At one point earlier in their process, they would charge each other’s crates, ( Vader reactively and Gatsby excitedly ) which almost always caused reaction form the other and I had a pair of males yelling at each other in a full barrier aggression mess. For the past few weeks this has not been the case. There is zero charging and zero reaction from either. Tonight, as I tuned in to check on scrappy, I caught these very small interactions.
Both of my boys are relaxed, disinterested for the most part and as of the other didn’t really exist. I attempted to draw attention to each several times... nothing but quick smelling and focused attention back on me ( my boys are heavily trained to watch me and keep their focus on me unless they are instructed to do so, in this case, I use “go say hi” to allow interaction with one another ). Neither were interested.
Scrappy is resting in his beddie, allowing downtime to heal from his neuter yesterday and is better each day with his commands. He got a clean bed with new stuffing yesterday ( I washed his bed and added stuffing) so when he came home he had nice fresh bedding. Who doesn’t love fresh clean bedding?!
Thanks for keeping up on the tale of three rotts over here at Raised Rotten.. the work with my resident dogs has been just over a year and move to a new state long and I am very happy with the progress they have made and proud of myself for utilizing the proper techniques t
Hey loves!
Happy Friday night! Coming to you with another Scrappy update!
This morning we learned the “lay down” command and since I was putting together the elevated bed I bought, I figured it was a great time to continue working it with an incorporated “stay”. Since I didn’t have the ability to monitor him or to entertain him, I kept him in a down stay with duration and he was EXTREMELY obedient and was able to keep his focus on me using his newly learned “watch me” or “look” command.
Also, it’s important to not only break up the order in which you give your dog their commands so that they don’t learn a routine and actually learn the command, we worked sit to down and down to sit as well and he’s really getting them nicely!
He continues to be a snuggle boy who loves loves loves to be near the human ( in this case me) and loves to please. He continues to cry when I leave but is settling much easier once I leave ( which I am monitoring in the event I need to counter condition that ) and his howling has almost completely subsided .
BIG BIG BIG win was that he met my two youngest nieces tonight through his barrier at the top of the steps and he was completely well behaved!! He showed zero signs of anxiety, displayed relaxed body posture and loose body language. He’s reluctant to take treats from anyone new so he didn’t eat their treats but asked away and showed displacement. I will have him see them again soon and will gauge in a slightly different way to be sure he’s good with the littles but I think we are safely saying kids pass the test with him.
Lastly, he no longer begins to cry when he heads my dogs upstairs and I watch his camera and while he lifts his head, no more crying!
He’s proving to be the dog I believed he was and I will continue to work with him, providing updates as he grows!
Enjoy this quick video of him.. I totally impromptu worked.. go pro upstairs. LOL
Vader has been making some serious strides and yesterday, at class, was the largest win yet!
Vader is terrified of life. Everything. He’s afraid of wind blowing leaves on windy days, he is terrified of new people or basically anyone that isn’t me, and cannot even see another dog, even if it’s a mile away. If he can see it, he instantly reacts. Vader is severely fear reactive, and that might actually be putting it mildly.
We have done a ton of work on recalls, eye contact, and focus and he took a million steps forward! The vet prescribed him trazodone, which I weened him off at home and we only take when we will be in any situation where he may feel anxious, scared, and could possibly react. He got it before class yesterday and that, in connection with all the training we have done, didn’t disappoint! He walked into class with one reaction, which was because a Great Dane was standing at the entry, they locked eyes and the Dane barked first! I was able to very quickly redirect, correct, and keep moving. We got two barks out where I used to have to literally drag him away kicking and screaming. In the past, he wouldn’t take his eyes off the subject he was aggressing and would non stop bark. Huge , HUGE success!!!!
We stayed for two classes, the first was an advanced class where I was familiar with all the pet parents and their dogs. The second was an enormous intermediate class with at least 4 other reactive dogs, which reacted... Vader did NOT!
Vader was able to allow our friend Joe approach AND pet him, and his dog Blue, who is a 4 year therapy vet, near him as well. Vader was nervous at first, but was able to regain his focus and though he would watch blue at times, was able to relax, finally allowing her closer to the point where he was completely un phased!!!! You guys, I almost cried three times I was so proud and my emotion was overwhelming!
We made it the entire time, did some target training, and gave his confidence a huge boost! Vader has neve
