The last licks of summer... Where did the days go? Our total August numbers include 375 cats and 215 dogs helping 223 Friend, Inc. Community Services families. Pets are family! Our continued mission is to keep pets out of overcrowded shelters and rescues. With the support of our local community, other pet organizations and continued partners (for food and other goods), we're able to help these families with the dogs, cats and critters. Thank you to everyone that supports the pet food pantry. We are here because of you.

EXCELLENT ADVICE for those with pets who react to fireworks. It's worth a quick read🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯

My boy Dexter can be a pretty wild guy, but believe it or not he has pretty severe phobia of fireworks. I've learned not to force the issue, but to proactively manage it to keep him safe and happy. Below are some simple safety tips for the 4 of July!

✔️Try to exercise your dog before the action starts. This will help aid in relaxation for later.

✔️Keep your dog on a leash if you don't have fenced in area, it just isn't worth the risk of them running off.

✔️Get your dog a safe room or crate. I personally have his crate in a dark, quiet area that somewhat isolates the noise.

✔️Use other sounds to keep them from hearing the noise. (Calming music, television, etc.)

✔️Get enrichment prepped ahead of time so they can enjoy being in their safe area. (Filled Kongs, Marrow Bones, Stuffed Beef Trachs, etc.)

✔️Make sure your dog has their collar secure with their tags attached that has all of your necessary information.

For puppies, I recommend playing firework sounds and other noises on Bluetooth speaker to help desensitize. Initially begin at low volumes and begin to up the volume as they do well. 🐾

Anaplasmosis is the second most common tick borne disease in PA. It's NO JOKE! Know the symptoms ⬇️
Symptoms of Anaplasmosis in Dogs:
Your dog may exhibit vague symptoms and signs of discomfort or that something is not quite right with him. It will be important to look for recent tick bites, or current ticks attached to your dog. Be aware of where you live and of the more specific symptoms he may display. Symptoms can be present as soon as 2 weeks after exposure and can last up to 20 days.
