đŸ©¶One of our barn moms has been battling brain cancer since December. Kara is the proud mom of three awesome kids, all of whom are very involved at the barn. She has not missed a show all year, even on the days she isn’t feeling the greatest. She is a strong woman with incredible family values and she has taught her children to be the same way.

In honor and support, we will be selling shirts so that she doesn’t have to feel alone in this battle. All of the proceeds will go back to her to help with travel expenses as she undergoes more radiation treatments. If you cannot purchase a shirt, we ask that you add Kara to your prayers. đŸ©¶

Look at all these Buckles

.

The Fort Armstrong Ranch Horse Series put on two awesome shows this summer. Every division had some great competition and the scores were all super close down to the last class of the show.

We are proud of all our riders as they have been putting in the hours and wet saddle pads and it has shown. Each one has the passion and drive to get better and learn more from lesson to lesson. They are easy to teach but can be a lil hard on themselves because they are so determined to do better.

“There is a bit of hidden magic in every mistake. The magic is called learning.”

Our buckle winners are
.
Taylor Miller - Reserve All Around
Reserve Novice Cattle
Reserve Open Ranch
Mia Karenbauer- Champion Novice Cattle and
Champion Novice Ranch
Cody Mackrell- Champion Non Pro Ranch
Stephanie Messer- Champion Primetime Ranch
Annie Messer - Champion EWD Ranch
Macie Boulanger- Reserve Youth Ranch
Justice Patterson - Reserve Novice Ranch
Gracie Shipley- Reserve P*e Wee Ranch
Paige Patterson - Reserve Youth Cattle
Cortney Shipley - Reserve Open Cattle

Thank you to all the Buckle sponsors and volunteers who put on the show. We cannot wait to come back next year.

Circles!!! They are harder than they look

Circles!!! They are harder than they look

What constitutes a circle? It’s probably the most mis understood, over done and poorly executed exercise in the mainstream horse world

A poorly done circle is a wet noodle flopping around, a disconnected body with a nose pointed onto a figure, while the hind legs flail around and the rib cage collapses.
A poorly done circle is a plywood board that someone is attempting to pound softness into, by pulling pieces and parts around

A well done circle is a masterpiece, a thing of beauty
A well connected body, straight on a curve

But the horse has to know how to turn with the shoulders, and to keep the hind legs behind them
A horse has to learn how to keep their neck center
A horse has to know how to expand the rib cage to the outside
A horse has to know how to stretch the outside of the body

That’s no small feat, and it’s quite the athletic endeavor, not to be taken lightly, and nothing to flop around on mindlessly

A circle deserves our respect, awareness, and time put in to develop it well

We would like to Congratulate a few of our riders on winning the Pizza Joes Ranch Versatility award at the SIS Ranch Show over the weekend. They have been working hard in lessons this summer to get better in their cow work and breaking down the maneuvers.

Paige Patterson and Vibrant starlight brought home the Champion buckle in the youth division.

Rayleigh Peffer and FQHR Commando took Reserve Champion in the youth division

Justice Patterson and A Pines Promise won Third in the youth division.

Our friend, Anita Galko also won Champion in the Green Rider division with her mare. Shes improved so much since spring. We are very happy to see the rewards for her.

Awesome belt buckle Jason and Emily Peffer. Love how it turned out.

Great weekend spent with my Hunters at the Erie Hunt and Saddle Club Horse show. Low key, relaxed atmosphere, friendly people, awesome ground, and a great Derby Party.

Horses rode good all weekend and the girls had fun. We are blessed with some great families who are always willing to help where it’s needed and a team captain who is selfless and just . Proud of you all. ❀

Great explanation of looking ahead with your body not just your eyes.

Romels are little different to get used to if you normally ride in split reins. We are always talking about the pressure/release or a bump/ release when we ride. It’s important to remember horses learn from that release not the pressure itself.

If you are looking for your next ranch show this is a great one. Full slate of classes from herdwork to ranch riding. Nice facilities, great people and fun atmosphere. We will be there with 14 horses and even more riders than that.

A reminder of the upcoming show, the trail will start at 9 am in the upper arena, followed by the ranch pattern.

We are back from the Centre Hall Novice QH Show. Horse rode well and the girls had some great rides. We are halfway thru our show season at this point and everyone seems to still have some forward momentum left which I’m happy to see.
Some highlights
..
This was Taylor and Ellie’s first QH show together. They won the youth ranch riding Friday and Saturday. I’m so happy for this team! Lots of work has happened to get where they are.
Adele and Simon had some great ribbons in hunter hack and the eq on the flat this weekend. Adeles positive enthusiasm got us all thru a long day of showing Saturday.
Kendall and Roxy rode a beautiful derby course Saturday evening but knocked the last pole in her handy round leaving her out of the top 3. In Kendall fashion, she still came out smiling and proud of her horse.
Jess and Hitch had a great show together, winning most of the youth over fence classes. Hitch knows his job so well these days and really loves to jump. It’s nice to see Jess enjoy that.
As always we had the biggest cheering section at the show. These families are some of the best I know and I’m glad to have them all there on these long days.
Lots of learning happened this weekend and my final thoughts from the weekend

until you’ve walked a day in their boots, you have no room to judge what someone else may be going thru or is working on. Horse show emotions are some of the toughest
 good or bad.

We can officially introduce our assistant trainer, Natalie White. She graduated from the University of Findlays Equine Program and moved to Denver shortly after, where she worked at an Equine Hospital. Natalie, her husband Chad and their dog Goose recently moved back home to be closer to family and friends. We are thrilled to have her back at the barn, where it all started for her. She started riding with me when she was just 8 yrs old. She will be giving lessons, training horses, helping out at shows and of course some barn work. One of Natalie’s best qualities is her smile and upbeat personality, she is a pretty awesome rider as well. As our program expands and grows, we are realizing all the possibilities and different directions we can go with more help. Glad to have you back Nat!!

We are thrilled to introduce our newest addition to Legacy Pines, a 3 yr old mare by Cat Smart Boonsmal. We have started her training on cows and are aiming to compete in the reined cow horse next spring.
Big Thank you to Hill Performance Horses on an uncomplicated sale and also TJ Pumphrey for the great start.

We had a GREAT show at the Fort Armstrong Ranch Horse Series. The facility was beautiful, staff was helpful and organized, and the cows were top notch even in the heat. We can’t wait to go back in August for the next. Thank you for all the long hours from all the volunteers
.. it’s appreciated!

We took 12 horses and 17 riders to this show. It was a busy weekend. Everyone rode well against some nice competition. It was hot but everyone did a great job of hydrating (horse and humans) and staying cool in the shade. Both evenings we ended our day at the lake to cool off. I guess I got more pictures on the beach than I did at the show this time. Way to go ranch team! Proud of you for trying new things, always working towards goals and being great teammates.

It’s been a busy couple weeks around here, but I wanted to jump back a few and congratulate our Hunter team for an awesome show. Erie Hunt and Saddle club puts on a wonderful show. Great grounds and stalls, friendly people and super organized. We had a blast.

The girls and their horses did wonderful. I don’t have all the placings that everyone won but we brought home quite a few Champions and Reserves. I need to take more pictures I guess as our team just keeps getting larger.

It was a beautiful night to cross the rainbow 🌈 bridge but we are already feeling a hole in our hearts 💕

Expresha just turned 30 yrs old last week. Her spirit was still so strong but her body was failing her. She was the alpha mare of the barn, even up until the end. She looked over to her herd tonight and gave a farewell whinny minutes before she passed , as to say “so long friends”. Our heart goes out to her lifelong owner, Marsha Zakowski. It’s never an easy decision to make but it was very selfless.

Huge thank you to Dr Jane Kennedy for all her kind talks and explanations. She has a calming presence for both humans and horses through the emotional process. It’s a gift for certain.

Run free sweet girl. I’m sure you busted through those heaven gates and made your presence known already.

Congrats Taylor Miller and Kendall Myers. You girls have been committed to getting these horses ready for this season. Keep up the good work.

đŸ€ Ranch Team- way to step up and make me proud!

On Friday, I asked you all to go out there and in the 🌧rain and mud and you did! But then it continued all weekend. From the cow work, to the reining, to the trail
.. I couldn’t be happier with each of you. We had a lil bit of everything from new horses, first time showing, first time showing outside, first time on a cow, young horses, old horses and lots of mud!

I’m super impressed with all of you who competed in the cow classes. It’s tough not getting to practice on live cows 🐄 at home but all of you improved so much on your position and control of your cows. The flag got its work this winter and it really shows.

The heart ♄ you’ve all put into your horses and riding really makes me happy!! Keep it up and great things are bound to happen. I love this team!

We would like to Congratulate Jess Cornell on a terrific Youth Show. She took both of her horses, YuBetUrSweetAssets and Hitch Bar None, in the over fence divisions and brought home numerous Top Five ribbons. Her big accomplishment was a Champion ribbon in a class of 38 horses for the Working Hunter Under saddle.

We are proud of your perseverance and determination with both horses. This is your year Jess! Sometimes it takes a little longer than what we would like but when you don’t give up and you soak up all the critiquing, good things happen. Way to go!
