Dog Anxiety Awareness Week is from May 1 - 7.

Just like humans, dogs are also prone to anxiety. Our sweet Annie suffers from anxiety which often makes the world a very scary place for her. Below are a few tips that have helped us ensure she feels safe, lives happy and reaches her fullest potential.

🐾 TIME AND PATIENCE
Be patient and consistent. It took us two years of daily walks with Annie to be able to walk by a newspaper on the ground without complete terror. Flags are still a problem but we are getting there 😳

🐾 ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
Creating a routine can help reduce anxiety for your dog as they know what is coming next.

🐾 EXERCISE DAILY
Just like with us humans, regular exercise can distract and lessen anxiety.

🐾 TRAIN
Determine the source of your dog’s anxiety, carefully re-introduce them to it slowly in a positive calming way. Enlist a professional trainer who specializes in working with dog anxiety. We joined a group class with a professional trainer, each week we go a different location so Annie can experience new things and people in a safe way.

🐾 TALK TO YOUR VET
There are a variety of medications and supplements that can help your dog relax or overcome anxiety if needed.

Today we had the pleasure of having group class at Twin Oaks Farm! We started off our day walking by the horses in their pastures and some in their stalls. We did meet and greets with dogs and owners, then practiced our recall. At the end we had time for well-deserved playtime! The dogs at group class were off leash having fun in an area that is not fenced to keep dogs in! Everyone did wonderful!

These two young pups are getting all their basic skills down early and then continuing to grow! Bentley and Bella are both working hard to become service and therapy dogs for their owners! These two are no double trouble, they are just double the fun!

Instructing horse lessons with my sidekick and a beautiful sunset! Do you have a horse? Do you wish your dog could be safe with you while you ride without being tied up? Teaching the place command allows the dog to have a set boundary on where to be, but have the freedom to sit, stand, lay, or move about that area. Here I have a raised dog bed/ cot next to where I am teaching.

Can you trust your pup off leash? Bella is a 4 month old puppy who went through our 2 Week Board and Train program. Her owners run a horse farm and need their pup to have great recall and be able to be off leash around horses. Yesterday, Bella did excellent around the horses and watching lessons! Off leash control does not happen overnight. Off leash control requires practice, boundaries, and trust between you and your dog. Keep up the great work!

Meet Bella! Bella is a puppy that is participating in our 2 week board and train. Over night, we got some snow, which Bella had never seen before. Sometimes, while dogs are staying at my home with me, they experience some firsts that owners hate to miss. I make sure I am ready with a camera to capture these moments. Bella LOVED that she could eat the snow! Remember, when dogs eat snow, it is double the amount of water. So if you are potty training, you might have to let the pups out 30 mins after.

Exercise is not only great for your dog physically, but also mentally! Regular walks can help dogs who are anxious get their nervous energy out and have routine to balance their day. Walking can help a dog to release excess energy. By adding activities to your walk you can further work your dogs mind, but also add extra fun to your adventure! Tank, like many Dobermans, is on constant alert. Throughout his walk he is focused on everything going on around him. By pausing to do an activity like place, down, or even a quick play session allows him to let his guard down and take a mental break. Then when we resume, he can enjoy the walk more!
