BEST AGE TO GET A PUPPY
The best age to get a puppy is between 10 and 12 weeks. This way, they have learned important dog behavior, such as bite inhibition that their littermates and mom teach. It is nearly impossible to replicate all the things they learn while developing with their natural family. Most of my clients with severe reactive (fear) issues, were taken away from their littermates and mother before 10 weeks. This is such a crucial developmental age. You get a much calmer, well adjusted puppy by waiting until this age. Good breeders will not place puppies until at least 10 weeks. It is usually pet shop or backyard breeders with no education, that let them go earlier. It is also against Utah State law to sell puppies under 8 weeks. In fact, it is against the law in 48 states.
Responsible breeders socialize their puppies by taking them out and about to as many new sights, sounds and smells as possible. They introduced them to people of different ages and nationalities. They even introduce them to various surfaces under their feet. Great breeders will have video/photos of these adventures and start early. There are many places that are safe to take unvaccinated puppies. It is important that when you get your puppy at 10 or 12 weeks, you continue this socialization process. By four months the puppy socialization stage is closing fast.
