Today was Kate’s last day.
Nearly 12 years ago on a cold grey February day, Dahlia kidded shortly before I got home from work. I found 3 big kids cold and wet in the dirt. I took them inside and came back to care for Dahlia, only to hear tiny baby screams with no baby to be seen. After several minutes of searching, the screams never stopping for a moment, I found her under the edge of the barn. Wedged up just barely in reach. I pulled out a tiny 1 1/2 pound ice cold ball of attitude. Demanding to be heard. I rushed her inside, cupping her neatly in the palms of my hands, and held her in front of a space heater until she warmed up. She then proceeded to out eat her siblings who were triple her size. She was the sassiest girl, and the biggest personality in the barn, despite her small size. It took her several years to catch up to her siblings, but she ended up a big chonky girl regardless. Likely due to her inclination to out eat a horse 🤷🏻♀️
She never cycled or freshened. Her ovaries showed huge cysts or abnormalities as a young doe. She spent her entire life a pet.
The last year and a half she’s slowly declined with arthritis in her front legs. She went on a sharp diet for the first time in her life in order to accommodate her tender toes. And eventually went on daily meds. Her meds increased over time, and we eventually maxed her out, but her pain continued to grow. Cold weather made it worse. She spent the last month on a generous dose of banamine added to her regimen. That kept her happy as a clam, though she could still barely walk. She never lost her perky personality, or her desire to shuffle to the milk room and gobble up grain as fast as she could inhale it, before she got caught. It’s hard to make end of life decisions when they are so bright eyed and bushy tailed.
Today was as cold as the day she was born, although we lucked out on some sunshine. We spent the morning soaking up sun and looking for “potato chips” in the grass. Then someone left a door open, silly me, and she quite literally ate grain until she was done. It was a lot 😅
I’ve been saving Echo’s ashes for a couple years now, and the sisters are finally reunited. She lays in the far corner of the main pasture, where she can keep an eye on the action.
