Our clients have heard me talk about the “porcupine effect” for a while now and this video depicts exactly what I’m referring to in regards to Aversive Corrections. Aversive Corrections are not personal, the behavior actually brings this correction. This correction has nothing to do with the owner and when done correctly, the dog will realize this.
In this particular situation, the Leopard realizes very quickly that he is to not try to attack the Porcupine . No one has to tell the leopard this, as the behavior of attacking the porcupine has led him to this conclusion. The act of attacking the porcupine has resulted in an immense amount of stimulus that will forever stick with this particular Leopard throughout his days.

💥Making that right decision💥
We had a few questions come through our direct messages today after the “Loki” post asking about “socialization” versus “desensitization”. To us, it’s the same thing, as we want the dog to ignore his/her surroundings and focus on the handler.
In this video we have JJ, who is sitting nicely beside me with his leash on the ground. I have one of our other trainers walk back-and-forth with another Board & Train client to add some distraction.
When JJ looks up at me, showing attention and focus, I mark that desired behavior and follow it with a reward. There is no food dangling over his head, no “kissing” noises or antics trying to get his attention; this is solely his responsibility and decision to display the wanted behavior that I am asking for. I remain quiet other than the marking of the behavior.

For those of you unaware, the Albany Humane Society was broken into last night by an individual(s) who shot the glass out of the door to gain entry and not only stole their donation money, but three puppies out of the back. The donation money lost was estimated to be between $700–$1000, and as we all know, the value on the puppies is priceless! We have sent a message already to the Director as we pledge to replace the entire amount of all donation money that was stolen from the office. With that being said, we are also offering a $500 reward to information leading to the arrest of the individuals that partook in this heinous crime! Just to go a little further, if the puppies are returned and adopted out, we are offering a free obedience session to each individual or family that adopts each of those 3 dogs.
