Stricker English Shepherds These dogs were used to herd the livestock brought along to feed the Roman troops. The English Shepherd's alert face shows intelligence.

The English Shepherd likely traces back to native dogs of the British Isles crossed with the Roman sheep and cattle dogs brought to the British Isles by Caesar when he invaded in 55 B.C. As the livestock was depleted, surplus dogs were left along the way, and were used by local natives and interbred with native dogs with similar herding talents to intensify those instincts. The English Shepherd wa

s brought to the American colonies by some of the first settlers and followed the development of the United States from east to west. This multi-purpose breed was highly prized as it was used to herd valuable livestock and to protect the isolated homesteads. The English Shepherd is a medium-sized dog of sturdy balance and harmonious proportions, built for speed and maneuverability. Being a "total" breed, English Shepherds should be judged both on their ability to work livestock and their physical and structural appearance. To be taken into primary consideration are type, balance, soundness, gait and temperament. The English Shepherd is energetic, intelligent, very active, agile, courageous and gritty. They are fearless in their purpose, acting immediately when commanded, and very responsive to the master's voice. They will adapt themselves almost at once to working commands around farm stock. The English Shephers is a low heeler, and is very free with the use of their teeth. They are very protective & wit guard their home. They are loyal companions to their master.

As a puppy, Copenhagen grew up at the fire station, his favorite nap spot was atop my bunker gear. His puppy hood most certainly helped him to grow into the friendly, outgoing dog he is today.

This week Grizzly joined me at work for my EMS shift. He is learning those some traits that Cope knows so well, including uniform naps.

With the stress and emotional toll that first responders face each and every shift, having these guys around lightens the mood and increases morale more than I can describe. They sure know how to exemplify good boy vibes.
