💔 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘: 𝗔 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 💔

We have SOO many heartfelt thank yous to give—especially to our incredible foster Jeri, who stepped up without hesitation to take in all 5 cats last week. 💛

But with rescue, things can change in an instant…

On Tuesday, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to help Sushi peacefully cross the 🌈 Rainbow Bridge. She was so loved, and our hearts are with everyone grieving her loss.

Then yesterday, we learned that the two remaining beloved Purrs & Whiskers alumni & housemates to Jasper, Charlie Gator, Sir Lancelot, Sushi, & Ozzie, also need our help & come back into rescue:
🐾 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿 (rescued in 2019)
🐾 𝗦𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗲 (formerly Cassie, rescued in 2021, and loving mama to the “Frozen” litter—Ana, Elsa & Kristoff)

We are picking them up today so they can be reunited with their familiar housemates.

⚠️ 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝗻𝘀:
• 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝘆𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗱
— his T4 level is >10 (normal is 0.8-4.1), so he will need immediate and ongoing care with medication & recurring bloodwork
— he has a severe, foul smelling ear infection that needs an ear cytology & treatment
— he also has a large mass in his left ear that needs to be addressed & determined if he is healthy enough to have it surgically removed (in our opinion, it looks cancerous).
• 𝗦𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗲 has had 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀, and we will be running a full senior blood panel to rule out any underlying medical issues.
— she also has severe dental disease with red gums & lost 2 teeth this week.

As you can imagine, these unexpected medical needs add up quickly—but we are committed to giving them the care they deserve.

Devastating news about our sweet Sushi that just came back to us last week when her owner moved into assisted living. 💔 I'm sorry I couldn't post about this Tuesday night, but I am having a very hard time processing this heartache.

On Friday when she went to our wonderful rescue vet, The Celtic Cat, LLC, we learned that Sushi was in congestive heart failure & displayed labored abdominal breathing. We were advised to get a Cardiology workup, and fortunately we were able to snag an appointment at CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets that someone had just canceled for Tuesday, April 14th.

We brought her to Dr. Sidley at CVCA Cardiology, and she quickly knew that Sushi had fluid in her lungs. Unfortunately Sushi was resisting remaining in position for the echocardiogram, which increased her respiratory distress even further. She received a Lasix injection (diuretic) and was quickly transferred to the ER ICU at Regional Veterinary Referral Center, where she was immediately placed in an oxygen cage.

After several hours and multiple injections, we hoped for signs of improvement, but each time she was removed from oxygen, her labored breathing returned. (Even her paw pads had a bluish tinge to them, although the picture didn't quite capture it.)

Both the cardiologist and ER veterinarian agreed that the kindest, most compassionate choice was to let her cross the rainbow bridge peacefully, so she would not continue to suffer.

Sushi was estimated to be just 9 years old & we never imagined having to say goodbye & help her cross The Rainbow Bridge so soon. We remember when she was rescued in July 2020 at appropriately age 3, gave birth to 3 kittens: Nori, Miso, & Sake, and was a surrogate mom to singleton Wasabi. Our hearts are completely broken. Sushi was so deeply loved and will be missed more than words can express. 🐾💔

This week, our rescue took in five incredible cats after a devoted owner faced a heartbreaking transition into assisted living. These cats have known love their entire lives—and we are determined to make sure they continue to receive the care they deserve. ❤️

Meet:
🐾 Ozzie (15 years old)
🐾 Sushi (9 years old)
🐾 Jasper (8 years old)
🐾 Sir Lancelot (7 years old)
🐾 Charlie Gator (5 years old)

Within days of intake, all five needed veterinary care—and the reality has hit us hard.

Sushi is facing the most urgent and serious concerns. She is 20% dehydrated and has a Grade IV/VI heart murmur, with signs that could indicate congestive heart failure.

He can be quite shy at first, but once he gets to know you, Sir Lancelot forms a deep bond and will be your loyal friend for life. He’s affectionate in his own sweet way and does wonderfully with other cats.

Ms. Sushi is a stunning tuxedo lady with the perfect mix of curiosity and affection. At 9 years young, she still loves to play and stay involved in whatever her people are doing—she’s your little shadow with a tuxedo flair!

This sweet girl is incredibly friendly and thrives on attention. She’ll happily hop up beside you for face scratches, back rubs, and even gives gentle “kisses” to show her love. Ms. Sushi gets along wonderfully with other cats, making her a great addition to a multi-cat home.

If you’re looking for a loving, interactive companion who will keep you company and steal your heart, Ms. Sushi is your girl.

CONGRATULATIONS to Nani & Stitch for finding their fur-ever home together! 🎉

You two are such amazing kittens! From being rescued at 3 weeks old, rejecting being bottle fed and having to be tube fed for a month, a slow transition to real food (which they now LOVE 😂), you were a joy to have at all of your foster homes! You are loved by so many at P&W and know you will spread much love & joy in your new home. Happy tails sweet babies! 😻

We're almost out of time before the cats have to go to a shelter. 😭. We are in a pickle & need urgent help....
One of our long-time senior volunteers has lost her home, is moving into assisted living on Saturday. She needs to surrender 5 of her cats (all adults) back to P&W on Friday if at all possible.

We have a foster lined up to take 3 of the 5 when she returns from a trip on Wed. 4/8. Both directors will also be out of town until 4/8, so neither of us can step in to care for these cats between now & 4/8.

1) We are in need of TEMPORARY foster care for the 3 cats until our foster can take them when she returns on 4/8.

2) The other 2 cats are still have NO foster lined up & in need of long-term fosters, or until we find another.

Does anyone have a spare bathroom or room that can help us help these cats that are P&W alums? 🙏🙏🙏

To make matters more urgent, I will be out of town until the evening of 4/7, and my rescue partner will also be away for 10 days starting 3/27—so we cannot step in to cover them.

Do you have a spare bathroom (preferred), bedroom, or quiet space where one (or more!) of these cats could stay 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀?
That’s it. A small space. A short time. A HUGE impact.

💛 Purrs & Whiskers will provide all supplies and medical care—you just provide a safe place and kindness during this transition. These cats are losing the only home they’ve known. Please help us make sure they don’t lose everything all at once.
