Check out these before and afters from one massage on a thoroughbred mare!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a routine massage for a TB mare in light work. Her rider explained the mare had been showing tension in her hind end. Upon initial assessment, she was particularly tight on her right hind side more than her left. She also showed some soreness especially around her sacrum up through her withers that was likely due just to normal workload.
Our horses are athletes, and they get muscle soreness from the workouts we ask them to do. It's normal, and conscientious horsemanship is often more than enough to keep body soreness from becoming a real issue.
But keep in mind, If your horse is showing new negative behaviors or a bad attitude, be sure to feel around your horse's topline and major muscle groups as they may be experiencing more pain than usual in their body. Reach out to an equine bodyworker for an assessment if you have any concerns!
From a massage session last night! This horse definitely enjoyed getting the poll released.
This horse had a higher hip on his left hand side over his right, and his owner explained they had some trouble with the left lead canter. Because the canter is powered by the outside hind leg, the weaker right hind leg may be the reason this horse has some trouble picking up the left lead.
RABIES
Not something we hear a lot about with all the other viruses, diseases, lameness issues, etc. that we worry about, so this a good educational look at some rabies symptoms. Disturbing stuff!
Look at the difference in topline from before and after an hour session of Raindrop Therapy!
The withers in particular show a big difference in muscle shape, with the topline smoothing out into the neck and over the back. And the oils have brought out some shine in the coat!
Raindrop Therapy uses a therapeutic-grade set of essential oils from Young Living. These oils are a pure, highly concentrated version of what you typically see in oils used for scent. The oils are applied using massage techniques to the legs and back, then a hot towel is added to encourage the back muscles to relax even further.
Raindrop Therapy has helped improve horses' posture and back suppleness, in addition to encouraging tension releases and even easing the symptoms of chronic pain and neurological disease.
Many horses enjoy the scents and will show major release responses during the session. This horse, known for clenching his jaw when being handled, actually popped his jaw and then licked and chewed repeatedly on the 3rd oil used. He spent the rest of the session with his head low and eyes soft and relaxed.
It makes me happy to see a tense horse get so much out of a session 😍😌
Copied in some humor for the day 🙃😆
"Rules of Dressage:
1. If you really want to get better at dressage, take it up at an earlier age – and grow an extra 3 inches of leg.
2. A test that starts with an arrow straight centre line and a square halt signifies the start of a Hickstead Speed derby.
3. A dressage test is a test of your skill against another competitor’s luck.
4. Dressage is about achieving a harmonious working relationship with your horse, whose only idea of harmony is eating grass in a paddock with his buddies.
5. If you want to end a drought or dry spell, wear a new jacket and Patey hat to an outdoor arena.
6. Untalented, difficult, aggressive horses have robust health, good hocks and long lives.
7. Talented tractable horses are accident prone and have OCD lesions.
8. You will ride the best test of your entire life just prior to being disqualified for not wearing your gloves.
9. Never keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your head before a test.
10. Never keep less than another 300 separate thoughts in your head during a test.
11. Horses do not improve their paces because you are wearing expensive German breeches.
12. If you chose a disco theme for your dressage to music test then the judge will be more than 90 years of age and Swiss.
13. The less skilled the rider, the more likely they are to share their critique of your test.
14. If you are considering the services of a horse clairvoyant to help you with training then you have reached the point of total desperation – try the German breeches.
15. Your horse has never heard of Podhajsky, let alone read the book.
16. No matter how badly you ride a test, it is always possible to ride a worse one.
17. If it ain’t broke, try shifting your position and it will be.
18. Judges only suffer from temporary blindness (or kindness) when they are judging someone else’s test.
20. If you fall off your horse in the arena you will have paid to have the test videoed.
21. If you are feeling confident before a show then three of the Australian dressage team will turn up to give their young horses some “experience.”
22. Your horse will perform its best piaffe ever when you ask for extended canter.
23. Since runs of bad competitions come in groups of three, the fourth competition is actually the beginning of the next group of three.
24. No one cheats at dressage because no one has worked out how to do it.
25. It is surprisingly easy to end a test with a perfect square halt once you have scored a four for every other movement.
26. The result of an expensive lesson from a top pro is that you will stop believing in that tiny piece of innate ability that was holding your riding together.
27. Remember when buying a dressage horse advertised as “needs experienced competitive rider” this really means “needs the skills of Phillip Dutton just to stay on board.”
28. If you think your test was better than someone elses, it probably wasn’t.
29. If you pay 60,000 for an imported WB, you will be beaten in Prelim by a quarter horse.
30. Clinics given by someone with an interesting accent are not necessarily superior to those given by the homeboy.
31. If you go to the expense of raising an expensive WB foal, he will have a talent for jumping and no walk worth talking about."
Have I mentioned I also offer kinesiology taping (AKA muscle taping)?
This therapy uses cotton tape placed over specific muscle groups to help stabilize joints, reduce swelling, and relax tight muscles. It has been successful in treating both human and equine athletes!
I have open time slots this Friday and Saturday. Send a message to learn more!
Check out these thermal images I took of a miniature horse's normal front hooves versus his deformed hind hoof!
It was very interesting to see the difference in anatomy shown on the images. The white and red spots indicate heat, in this case usually the inner "fleshy" parts of the hoof where the bones of the hoof and the laminae are.
Message me to book a thermal imaging appointment, and check out the other equine bodywork services I offer!
✨ Today's Before and After! ✨
The picture on the left is before a massage therapy session on a 9 year old Arabian gelding. Look at how drawn in his muscles are around his chest and lower neck!
The picture on the right is approximately 45 mins later after his session. You can already see the difference in muscle tone around his chest (posterior pectorals) after just this one session!
When I started working on him another boarder remarked how he was twitching in his chest and shoulders. It was clear this gelding was experiencing some pain and tension in the area, which is no surprise as he tends to carry himself in a pretty lofty trot. But after his massage his muscles were able to release and relax into a more natural position.
I always love seeing horses feel better after I work with them! 🥰
A good reminder that a horse will take time to adjust their body to any new discipline. Just because they're good at one, doesn't mean they can just be good at the next thing with no effort or potential retraining.
Did you know........❓
Even just one session of Sports Massage Therapy can help relieve tension and soreness in your equine athlete?
A single massage session has many benefits, including increasing circulation and digestive function, releasing painful muscle knots, increasing mineral retention in bones, and helping identify areas that are especially sore in your horse's body. It also helps prepare muscles for chiropractic adjustment! While we typically recommend 3 sports massage session to see long term results, even one massage session can provide you with a wealth of new information about your horse's current well-being and fitness level. And remember, we include thermal imaging in all of our massage sessions!
