Happy Monday morning. I love their joy of life. ☺️

As best as possible, we want to avoid letting them practice an unwanted behavior.

It's a universal truth to ALL animal behvaior- dogs (and people, chickens, orcas, horses, whatever) Do What Works. If a behavior produces a result they wanted, they'll repeat it. So make the ones you want easy and rewarding. It really is that simple, at the base.

Zorro is staying for a 2 week board and train. He desperately needs basic house manners. Though we were going to work on things like sit , down, stay, recall etc. It became clear when he tried to push his way through any door, that we needed to include door manners. This is day one.

Finally. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior is finally saying what dog trainers have been saying for a long time. Socialization can occur before puppy vaccinations are complete around 16 weeks. But remember, socialization isn't about meeting every single person or dog in the neighborhood. It is about life experiences.

Have you heard of Trigger stacking....

TRIGGER STACKING – WHEN BEHAVIOUR HAPPENS “OUT OF THE BLUE”

We’ve all had those days when nothing seems to go right and one frustrating thing after another happens to us, leaving us feeling wound up, stressed and ready to explode at the next unsuspecting person who dares to ask us something.

This “unsuspecting” person may think we have a serious behaviour problem or need anger management therapy, when the truth is that we’ve just had a really bad day or even a few bad days and don’t usually behave like this at all.

Dogs are no different and a behaviour that seems completely out of character or happens “out of the blue” is often caused by “trigger stacking”.

A trigger may be anything that increases a dog’s stress levels and has a negative impact on their emotional, mental or physical state.

These may be small things that we may not even notice or seem insignificant to us, but they are all adding to an increasing “stack” of events that may culminate in out of character behaviour.

When stress levels reach a certain point, the next stressful event, however small, may cause an explosive reaction that is completely unexpected.

Instead of just focusing on a particular behaviour and seeing it as a problem that needs to be prevented, take a step backwards, look at the bigger picture, look at events, circumstances or environmental factors that may have played a role leading up to that behaviour.

Being aware of potential stressors and allowing your dog time to decompress, relax and unwind for a few days will often mean the difference between “normal behaviour” and a behaviour that seems completely out of character.

It's essential that every puppy learns to enjoy being handled, especially on the parts of the body that turn into common bite triggers. Early puppyhood handling and socialization is easy to do and makes a huge difference in a dog's temperament and quality of life, for the rest of their life!

In this photo you see two species, a human and a canine. The human has approximately 1 billion neurons in their brain while the canine has appoximately 500 million. Now let me explain why all of us in the dog industry become extremely agitated on a daily basis. This is a comparison of the two species and the silly expectations people place on canines.
1) Human- Given two plus years to accomplish potty training.
1) Canine- Human wants canine potty trainined in two weeks or they will have to rehome the dog....Please take the diaper off your eight month old human and let them crawl around your floor, lets just see the results....
2) Human- Gives human babies pain relievers and various numbing agents to help appease the pain of teething.
2) Canine- Demands Dog Trainer tells them how to reprimand their dog for chewing.
3) Human- Encourages young humans to run and play with endless forms of mental and physical stimulation.
3) Canine- “I have got to teach this dog to calm down!!!”
4) Human- Given 20 plus years to complete an education and become a productive member of society.
4) Canine- Expected to behave flawlessly after 6 weeks of training.
5) Human- Given sick and personal days from work and endless excuses for poor performance.
5) Canine- Expects to perfom perfectly 365 days a year with no questions asked. Canines are also not allowed to feel bad or forget.
6) Human- Expects a pay raise anually for the job they perform.
6) Canine- Humans demand their dog perform more every year and don’t believe they should reward the dog for the work they perform.
Dear human....If you don’t train, don’t complain!
