Festus was the best cat I ever had. Loving, playful, social, and accepting of every foster cat I brought home. He was a rescue kitten and I had him for fifteen years, until he crossed the rainbow bridge. He brought me so much joy. I miss him everyday but know he's on the other side with his feral brother; his best friend.

i got Techy as a 2-month-old baby and had him until about a week ago. 12 years and he just crossed the rainbow bridge. I miss him terribly, as you can see we were very close, and had been since day one.

There will never be another like him, he loved Ensure, and most other human food. I cry myself to sleep at night because I miss him so. He thought he was human and acted like it. He was my baby, and I miss him so very much. Love you Tech and you are irreplaceable.

Rusty is a special needs kitten. He was born to a brother and sister and has hip problems. He can only jump into a chair and not any higher. He couldn't stand up until he was 2 months old. I did physical therapy on his legs so now he can walk. I was his foster mom and we decided to keep him because weren't sure how anybody else would treat his disability.

On my way to work as a vet technician a few weeks ago, I saw what looked like a sock or shirt laying in the road. I didn’t think much of it.

About 15 minutes later a woman came in holding a box and said she found a kitten on the road, and she thinks it is still alive. My heart sank knowing I drove right past this sweet girl without thinking twice.

"My boys are both rescues - in a long line of a family or rescue kitties! Mac came to us to keep my late Bogey Cat company when his last sister passed and the Lady of the House, Ms. Tammy, would not play with him. Bogey left me 2 years ago, and I did not want to get a new kitty until Fate told me to.

Macaroni was absolutely enjoying being an only cat - but a friend put a beat up photo of Mr. Buttons in an Elizabethan collar saying if he was not adopted they would put him back out where they found him a mess after someone beat him up badly. He had drains in his back and his tail had to amputated. I said if NO ONE took him, I would.

Well - 2 plus years later, he will sit near me and let me pet him- only when its HIS idea - and when he is eating. His trauma was fierce but he knows he is safe here and one day, I am sure, he will be a lap cat. Patience is the word - and even though Mac hated losing his only-cat status - they are fast friends and play with gusto!"

While buying cat food at Petco the first Saturday in December 2011, a family came in with a pathetic looking kitten. The little girl was crying and the boy just looked down at his feet while the parents spoke to the rescue group.

I could tell the woman running the rescue was very angry while the kitten looked over her shoulder and I swear, every time I looked up she gave me the "silent meow".

After I finished checking out, I went back into the store. By that time the family had left and I asked what the story was with the kitten. Apparently, the daughter wanted a kitten and the boy a puppy.
Well the pup, a pit bull, attacked the kitten several times and rather viciously so they brought the kitten to the rescue. No, I don't blame the dog, I blame the idiot people. The kitten looked about 5 or 6 weeks old and the woman told me she would not survive the weekend.

She was covered in blood and scabs as well as ear mites and fleas. She was also malnourished so they let me have her to see what I could do. I kept her locked in a guest bathroom over the weekend and dropped her off at my vet's the following Monday morning.
I wanted a thorough check-up and after filling out paperwork the girl at the desk asked me her name. "I don't know, I've been calling her Dog Food all weekend.", I replied. She yelled at me for such a horrible name so I said, "well, how about Puppy Chow?" She went ballistic, screaming at me and telling me unless I came up with a real name, she would not let me have her back at the end of the day.

Now, I had been taking my other two cats there (both shelter kitties) for a little over 6 years at that point so most of the staff knew me. I thought about a name but just couldn't come up with one.

The song "Christmas Eve in Sarajevo" came on the radio and I thought that was the perfect name.

When I went back after work that evening, the young lady says, "Well?" in a not-so-nice tone. I said I'm calling her Sarajevo. She looks at me, says "That's pretty. Um, how do you spell that?".

The vet came out and told me she was approximately 3 months old but so small because of malnourishment. She was treated for fleas and ear mites as well as worms just in case. Fortunately, her blood work came back negative for diseases so I could now introduce her to my other two cats.

I had her spayed and decided to keep her. The woman that ran the rescue was surprised but very happy with her outcome. Fast forward to her annual check-up the following year. As soon as the vet comes into the room where we are waiting, he booms out "How's Dog Food, my miracle kitty doing?" I told him how unhappy his receptionist was with me about calling her Dog Food. He just laughed and said, "I can fire her so she knows not to say anything to me."

Fast forward another couple of years, Sarajevo (or Twerp as my husband calls her - for good reason!) was found to have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Three years ago, her vet figured she only had a few months left to live and felt it best not to stress her out with any more visits. She is still with us. She gets tired easily and gets out of breath quickly when playing but is still very loving to us and still quite the "twerp" to the other cats. Definitely an instigator!

Needless to say, she is quite pampered and very loved. It will be devastating when her poor heart finally gives out but perhaps because she has so much heart, she is still going strong.

I took my Dana to the dog park and noticed a young dog (pittie mix) hanging out at a truck stop. I saw her a couple of times and said, “If you are still here the next time, I'm getting you.”

I think the truckers had been feeding her, but no one took her. I bought a McDonald’s cheeseburger, and she hopped into the car. I was concerned because she did look a lot like a pit bull. My vet said she was a hound mix. She was good with the other dogs (I was fostering chihuahuas for a rescue). She was the sweetest girl, and I never regretted bringing her home. She was not chipped and had no collar.

At this time, there was a lot of propaganda about pit bulls being dangerous, and if I had taken her to the shelter, she would have been put down. So glad I didn't. She lived with us for 10 or more years and developed lung cancer. I was with her to the end.

We rescued a 5-month-old puppy named Harley, but soon decided she needed a friend, so we went to the adoption day at a local shelter. I had just coaxed a lap sized little fellow out to let me pat him when, fate stepped in.

A family brought in this gigantic, 145 pound, 6-year-old dog to be surrendered. My stomach turned, my eyes welled up, I stared in blatant disbelief.

A volunteer saw me watching. She explained that they had originally found "Jed" and his sister as puppies, in a bag, tossed out the window of a moving car! Both puppies were in such bad shape that one vet wanted to put them down!

Luckily a second vet saved them, eventually both were adopted. That should have been happily ever after. But no. I heard the volunteers tell his "family" that in all likelihood Jed would live out his life in a cage at their shelter. Did they realize, did they understand?

I still had the little dog on my lap, tears were streaming down my face, knew in my heart that giant dog Jed was “my dog”.

Earlier I'd been told they had other applications on the little dog; he'd get a home. We might be Jed's last hope. My husband was on board, and the shelter volunteers cried all over again when they realized Jed had a new family before his old one left the building.

Jed was the very best dog we could have asked for, gentle, sweet and loving, wanting nothing more than to be pet. He loved treats and walks, naps in our bed, sometimes stubborn, with the silkiest ears.

He and Harley were glued at the hip, such great friends! We were a family for 5 years, nearly to the day, when we regretfully had to say goodbye to him last month. We held him to his last breath so that he with no doubt knew that in the end he really did find a forever family.

We all miss him dearly, especially Harley.

My husband and I were returning home from an evening out with friends. Traveling our regular route from town, we were going past a park where the speed limit is 20 mph. A white SUV ahead of us slowed almost to a stop, the passenger door opened and a dog was held out and dropped to the road. We could see him in our headlights. Looking stunned and afraid, he turned to watch the car as it sped away.

We hit the brakes and parked. A car behind us did the same. We jumped out and my husband went after him. The dog had walked out into the middle of the road. The people behind us were also out of their car and running up to us. When I came around to my husband, I could see the hope in the eyes of the dog. He was a mid-sized pit bull/boxer looking dog with a beautiful brindle coat. He let my husband take hold of his collar, and they walked to the back of the car.

There was lots of chattering by all of us: "Did you see that?" "That poor dog." "How can somebody do that?" "Is it okay?"

My husband looked up at me and said "Do you want another dog?" My response was quick and emphatic. "Absolutely!" The driver of the other car said he would take him if we didn't. But it was decided. We got into the car with him on my lap and started home. I was looking at his coat and his face. He looked concerned so I talked to him about how beautiful he was and that he had a stripped coat like a Tiger. My husband asked, "So will that be his name?" I thought that was perfect, so that night, instead of becoming a thrown-away dog, he became a Tiger.

He had a couple of issues that love and trips to the vet easily took care of. After being neutered, he settled down and fit into our pack perfectly.

Tiger has been with us for four years now. He has a sweet disposition and loves to cuddle. His joy and love for us is most noticeable by the thumping of his tail when we call his name or just walk into the room. We love him the same as he loves us, unconditionally.
