When you’re fresh out of sheep to herd, a red ball will do just fine. #corgi #puppyplayskills
Supervised play with Canine Artist Puck and Karl the Husky. If your puppy or dog has a ton of energy and no appropriate playmates at home, a giant stuffed Melissa and Doug toy can be a great outlet! #miniatureschnauzer
Working with Canine Artist Archie on beginning skills for treibball. Archie was afraid of the big ball so we moved very slowly and at his pace. Being the brave wonder that he is, Archie worked his way up to this in about 30 minutes! #cattledoghuskyboxerstaffyrottiegsdgoldenmix
New Canine Artist Francis has endless amounts of energy and very, very, VERY strong dissecting, chewing, and prey drives! Once Francis’s humans learned about his drives and that his drives need fulfillment, they went thrifting and found inexpensive toys for him to dissect to his heart’s content!
Today, Francis learned his new blue mat (see comments) is a place to relax, wait patiently, and take treats softly. We’ll also be taking his blue mat to the car to teach Francis how to relax there as well.
Francis has landed in a terrific home with an awesome family who is willing to put in the work to help him live his best life. Francis will be rockin’ all his training in no time at all! #labpitbulldachsundllasaapsomix 🤣
New Canine Artist Olympia has been struggling with leash reactivity and pulling on leash, and is being treated by her vet for anxiety. We switched things up! Instead of a head halter and 6’ lead, Oly’s awesome humans agreed to try a harness and 15’ lead. Here is Oly’s first Walking With Regard lesson around her neighborhood. Three off-leash dogs ran up to Oly at different times during our walk. Oly only reacted to one who was barking at her with a bit of lunging and return barking, but she was easily lured away and never went over threshold. We still have work to do, but Oly’s humans can now see a bright future. #greatpyreneesswissshepherdmix
Fairly new Canine Artist Hazel has been with her family since March of this year and has already delivered several bites and body slams. Hazel presents with an insatiable need for exercise and stimulation. She has a high prey drive and has caught a chicken and three bunnies. Without a DNA test, we can't be certain of Hazel's breed, however, many of her traits and features are seen in Belgian Malinois. Malinois need to be with very skilled handlers/trainers and should not be adopted out as family pets.
Hazel's humans are lovely and have provided her with a great home, a lot of love, and as much enrichment and training as they could. However, this is a case of a rescue failing to fully vet a dog and not taking into consideration the needs, desires, and experience of the adopters. Hazel was described as "loving, calm and sweet; good with other dogs and good with considerate children over 10 yrs old." Fortunately, Hazel's adopters do not have children in their home.
Canine Arts is supporting this family as they've had to make the heart-wrenching decision to return Hazel to the rescue. This decision wasn't immediate and wasn't taken lightly. This family is grieving the loss of Hazel. Hopefully, they will be able heal from this experience and in time, will be able to welcome another dog into their lives. #belgianmalinoisshepherdmixmaybe
New Canine Artist Perigee’s first Walking With Regard lesson filled her bucket to the brim! Changing to a 15’ lead gives a dog the freedom to sniff (and other fun things) without the tightening that usually occurs with a short lead. At first a 15’ can feel intimidating, but with Canine Arts coaching, clients get the hang of it in no time and begin to see many moments of dog bliss! #catahoulamix
New Canine Artist Kali is a 7-year-old (fairly recent Texas transplant) love bug who is a very skilled escape artist! Management is the priority in our plan. For now, Kali can’t be unsupervised in the backyard, as she has an innate digging drive and will dive deep under any fence line. We are installing a long zip line so Kali can have full access to the back yard when her humans are gardening or doing other outdoor activities where they can’t keep an eagle eye on her. We will be installing an emergency recall, creating a dig pit as a “legal” outlet for Kali’s digging drive, finding spaces for her to run while on a long line, and teaching Kali that being with her humans is the best place in the world to be.
This video is of Kali preparing her bed after our session. We had played and done a lot of brain exercise, and she was very sleepy! Her very wise human has given her blankets to dig in while she settles in for a nap. Sleep well, sweet Kali! #pitbull
New Canine Artist Pipit and his humans’ first Walking With Regard lesson! After some coaching from me, I asked Mom to take over the coaching and coach Dad. What a great way to support each other. When we take turns coaching, we learn more quickly and notice things that we might not otherwise see. This lovely team caught on very quickly and Pipit’s joy was infectious!
Pipit is still decompressing from his mid-December arrival, but is settling in nicely. We’ll be working on clear and consistent communication, how to read Pip’s body language, understanding when he’s asking to be touched/pet (and when he’s not), confidence building, resource guarding prevention training, manners, “legal” drive outlets and, of course, Walking With Regard. So excited to be a part of this family’s journey! #pitshepherdbeaglemix?🤷🏻♀️
