HELPFUL INFO FOR NEW PUP OWNERS!!!!

Food.
I am currently using “Taste of the Wild Puppy” food it can be mixed with UNSALTED chicken or beef broth to make it mushy for puppies (if needed but not for long term). Don’t want dental issues. You will notice that your pup drinks very little water and this is ok if you are adding the broth to their food. You can always check on food quality by going to www.dogfoodadvisor.com Please educate yourself on blood sugar drops in small breed puppies and keep Karo or honey on hand in case of a sugar drop….. VERY IMPORTANT! Always keep a few things on hand….jars of baby food chicken and baby food rice cereal. If a pup won’t eat you can mix the chicken with the cereal and they usually love it. If necessary spoon feed your pup. Do not stress the pup with too much activity and then expect him to eat. He/she may start vomiting from stress and then cannot eat and then you have an emergency. Call me for help…or rush to the vet. Our pup guarantee does not cover this!

Dental Chews.
It is important to have healthy chews for your pup to prevent plaque build up. They love to chew but beware that China has things in our stores that can easily kill your pup. I buy from http://www.BesyBullySticks.com For young pups the trachea, gullet or bladder sticks are great because they are easier to chew. Bully sticks are harder and soon your pup can handle that. Just remove chewies from your pup when the piece gets small so they do not choke. I also like the edible nylabones. Rawhide is bleached and nasty. Milk bones are garbage. Pig ears are too high in fat. Pup cups at Starbucks are 90% fat…don’t do it. Read up on pancreatitis, deadly for pups. Lambs ears and cow ears are fine.

Toys.
Please don’t buy any toys that are not made in USA. High levels of lead have been found in toys from china, Please do not buy rope toys. Be sure any toy you buy does not have small removable parts that can break off and cause choking. NEVER give real bones that have been cooked. They splinter and can kill your pup. No greenies. Your pup will lose his baby teeth around 6-7 months and if any are retained please have your vet remove them during spay/neuter.

Training.
Paper training has begun before you get your pup. NEVER rub his nose in it, this will only make him fear you. Praise is the best method. Do not allow your pup free range in your home until fully trained. Start with a small area and increase as the pup learns where he is expected to go. I like the IRIS indoor/outdoor pens on Amazon for training. If you are training him to go outside (supervised) Take him out after he eats or wakes from a nap. Scolding only makes him fear you.

Vaccines.
Your pup will have his/her first vaccine at 8 weeks and will need that same one repeated at 12 and 16 weeks. Your pup shoud see your vet within the first 7-10days that you bring her/him home. Bring a stool sample at your first appointment. With vaccines…less is best! (If your vet won’t give less or hear you out. Run…. ) Over vaccinating can harm your new puppies immune system and shorten his lifespan. The rabies vaccine is hard on your pup. I do not get rabies vaccines until my pups are 6m-1yr old. Preferably I like to wait till 1yr old.
I personally would NEVER EVER give Lyme, Lepto or bordatella vaccines due to reactions I have witnessed in the past. Talk to your vet about the risks.
Your pup’s immune system is not 100% until after the 16 week shot.
Children’s Benadryl is great to have on hand for drug reactions and bee stings. The does is 1ml per pound of pup. Be sure there are no artificial sweetners, they are deadly!!!
Sugarless gum is lethal. I won’t have it in my house.

Ticks, fleas and worms.
I don't really have a huge tick issue. Please discuss with your vet….but again…less is best. These drugs are neurotoxins. Spraying your yard for ticks is risky for your pet also. I deworm all pups and moms before the pups leave, but it is a good idea to do an annual stool check. Unchecked worms can get into your pup’s organs and become lethal. Be careful where your pup goes before his immune system is optimal. Avoid pet stores and dog parks. One family stopped at rest areas on their way home with their pup and he picked up parvo and died after several days in an emergency vet. Sad and preventable.

Bathing.
I recommend Tropiclean shampoo for pups and adults. My groomer friend swears by it…..good enough for me. Chihuahuas do not need to go to the groomers, just brush them and keep them clean. The long coat pups do not shed as much as the smooth coat ones but do tend to get small mats under their ears/bum.

Ears.
Your pups ears may not stand up perfectly, but give it time. Once in a while some will end up with tippy ears, I think it is cute. They may tip during teething. That lasts 6-7m .If he/she is itching his ears, get some ear wash at your local pet store of vets. Chihuahua are not prone to ear problems due to the way they stand up allowing air flow. Never use any Hatrz products!

Harness.
Please no collars on your tiny pup, you can do permanted damage to his throat. Besides with a harness you can easily lift your pup if a big dog approaches.

Reverse sneeze.
Be aware that your pup may make a coughing sound when excited of if drinking too fast. This is called a reverse sneeze of a chihuahua honk. Not a big deal unless it is very frequent.

Knees.
Please do not allow your pup to become over weight. This causes stress on his little legs. Surgery for a luxating patella is very painful to your dog and to your pocket book. Do not let you pup get overweight, this also causes knee problem and heart issues as well. If you want your pup on your couch or bed, purchase a set of pup stairs or a ramp. Our guarantee does not cover this.

Chihuahua Honk.
If your pup makes a choking sound when excited , running or drinking fast it is called a reverse sneeze or a Chihuahua honk. This is normal but if in excess please see your vet. Collars can be harmful and also cause this problem. If very severe it can be a collapsing trachea.

If you are feeding Purina and are concerned about the food. Here is what we know It seems to be from all different types of Purina, with Purina Pro Plan, and Purina One being the most common. Pet Parents have been contacting them and at first they were offering $10 coupons, now they are offering to pay pet parents vet bills if they don’t sue.

If you or someone you know is feeding this food, I recommend you stop the food immediately. Do NOT wait until your pet gets sick or Purina issues a recall. One of My dogs died in 2019 from Hills Science Diet, 2 weeks BEFORE Hills issued the recall. Dogs/cats were sick for 6 m before the recall.
We know it is Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach, Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Rice, Purina Pro Plan Salmon, Purina One and cat food. However, just like in the Hills Recall there ended up being many more. If one food is bad they often are all bad. Purina doesn’t have different quality control processes for different foods. Purina has not issued a recall yet, even though many pet parents have notified them. Please do NOT take a chance with your pets life.

Symptoms: Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle weakness and seizures

Take the following steps:

1. Begin a detox immediately using milk thistle to rid the toxins from their system. (if you don’t know how to detox your pet join the group)

2. If your dog is having seizures, you can try CBD for dogs which often will help with seizures

3. Stop the food immediately. Post in the group above what your pets current diet is and medical conditions and we will help you find a more nutritious and safer diet

4. Save the pet food. Do NOT release it to Purina in any circumstances

5. Contact your vet and request a copy of your pets medical records. Ask the vet to report your concerns to Purina. Its likely that will not do this since they get a commission from Purina for selling the food

6. Report it to the FDA (https://truthaboutpetfood.com/report-a-suspect-risk-pet-food/)

7. Report it to Purina (https://www.purina.com/contact-us)

a. Do NOT agree to send them the food. If you feel compelled to do so, only send a small portion. Keep the rest of the food in the freezer

b. Do NOT send the medical records to Purina

c. Document your conversation with Purina

d. Purina may eventually say they will pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. Eventually, if there is a class action lawsuit you will be unable to join if you do this or if you want to file your own lawsuit. Contact the Facebook Group above for more advice

8. Consider getting your pet food tested (https://truthaboutpetfood.com/help-to-check-your-pet-food/) This would be helpful if you want to pursue legal action.

Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents. Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall).

What makes our puppies smell so good? I’ll show you. It’s called Silk-In-Finish leave in conditioner . This is what we put on them after they are bathed and towel dry you spray it on before you blow dry. (Not in eyes obviously). This is what we have used on our show dogs and this is what a lot of other people also use.. smells Devine. n

We recommend rabbit/rodent nail clippers to clip Chihuahua nails. Their nails are small and delicate. The large regular dog clippers are way too big and you could cut more than you want. Good afternoon Merry Christmas 🎄 And Happy NewYear to all this is me Barbara and my daughter Danielle’s chihuahua (Bruno). One of my babies from past litter.

Did you know the Chihuahua originated down in Mexico, and takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The breed has apparently been around for a very long time. There is evidence that they were kept by the Aztecs. In fact,16th-century conquistadors documented seeing many small dogs with thin coats. Cool eh.!

Hope everyone is doing well can’t wait too meet everyone when they come to get their pups 1/7.

Some good info- Just a heads up.... If your new pup becomes lethargic or unsteady, give honey, karo, sugar water or NutraCal etc on the gums.
If it is a blood sugar drop, he will perk up. He will need food once alert. Constant honey will give highs and lows. If they are vomiting along with the sugar drop he/she will need the vet asap for IV's and nausea injections. This is a life or death situation. My guarantee DOES NOT cover blood sugar drops. It is up to you to be sure your pup is eating enough. The tiny runts are more prone to sugar drops due to size. I hate to see a simple sugar drop turn into a vet bill that will be thousands of dollars. Keep your new pup away from stress....a new home...new people...etc is stressful for thees tiny babies.
