Nail trimming 101! This is a great way to start getting your dog used to having their nails trimmed. It's one process a lot of dogs are reluctant to have done but is required. This is how I start all puppies and how I get some easier, adult dogs accustomed to trimming their nails.
Remember, dogs don't have to enjoy everything we do with them. Tolerating the less enjoyable things is our goal, especially when it's in the best interest of their wellbeing!
Yesterday marks a week of working with Wyatt and we sure have learned a lot already. It didn't take long for him to realize that he couldn't get away with his "shenanigans" staying with us. Like most puppies, he was allowed to do as pleases, which is like giving freedom to a toddler... it never ends well. Strict management and preventing bad habits from forming helps him understand what the rules are within the home first.
We have also worked a lot on handling - getting him comfortable examining/touching his whole body, clipping his toenails and sitting still while doing it all. Exposing him to new sights/smells/sounds/people/dogs and doing so in an appropriate way. We also started learning some obedience commands and working on them in novel environments.
Stay tuned for more videos on Mr. Wyatt!
Ventured out with Delilah and Ellie today to practice some of their obedience! Both girls and their owners did great for it being the first time really utilizing the training out in public. Wouldn't have been possible if the work wasn't done at home before hand. Their owners put tons of work day in and day out to be here and it shows! Who else can say their 6 month old dog is this well behaved?
Miss Molly watching the world go by 🌎 This was just a portion of our walk but we addressed a lot of things while walking the neighborhood. It's always a joy working with these two!
Running these pups through environmentals will help build more confident and stable dogs! Encourage your dogs to overcome and problem solve. Teach them to push through instead of avoiding the situation all together. It was nice to see everyone so eager to run through this exercise!
Not too shabby for 9 years old 😏 these cooler mornings have helped a lot with getting the dogs exercised for the day!
Loved the confidence coming from this dog today! It was our first time back at dock diving and he did amazing picking up where we left off from last year. His little jumps into the water kill me 😆
This may not look like much but this meant everything to Creed today! He's a big guy with little confidence so getting him to be comfortable with the smallest obstacles is a challenge. He went from completely refusing to walking over these surfaces no problem by the end of the hour 👍
Focused on a lot of environmentals in today's puppy class! Everyone is growing in many ways 👍
I know I've posted a lot about how I feel about breeders. I used to be 1000% adopt don't shop but that's changed over the last couple years. There is a place for RESPONSIBLE breeding and there's no shame if you decide to buy from a breeder.
Just like there are a lot bad breeders out there, there are also a lot of bad rescues. Ones that don't properly temperament test, lie to potential adopters, don't vet check, don't provide support for adopters, the list goes on.
So whether you decide to adopt from a rescue or buy from a breeder DO YOUR RESEARCH.
Here are my 2 most recent dogs I've welcomed into my family. They're both incredible little dogs and they've come so far in so many ways!
Cricket (terrier mix) was adopted from Father John's Animal House and Dually (chihuahua) was adopted from Cold Nose Warm Heart NJ. Both rescues are places I highly recommend working with! I respect a lot of what they do within their organizations. Check them out!
