Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation TRF is a nonprofit dedicated to saving retired Thoroughbreds from possible neglect, abuse & slaughter

Our first farm opened in 1983 at a correctional facility in New York, where inmates participated in a nationally accredited TRF Second Chances vocational training program in equine care and stable management. The TRF Second Chances program has since expanded to 9 states and provides an important "job" for horses whose racing-related injuries leave them unsuitable for a second career as a riding ho

rse. The inmates learn marketable skills as well as invaluable lessons in compassion and responsibility. TRF also offers permanent retirement at 16 private farms around the country.

"Their bond is something truly special- Teddy has become Walt's guardian, and in doing so, he's given us all a beautiful reminder of the powerful connections horses can form."- Stacie

Adoption highlight- Mighty Tuff, a retired Thoroughbred now affectionately called “Teddy,” found a remarkable new role when he arrived at Renaissance Farm in Maryland. He quickly connected with Walt, farm owner Stacie Nichols’ horse, who has narcolepsy and sometimes collapses unexpectedly into sleep- a condition that most other horses didn’t understand. But Teddy did. Every time Walt drifted off, Teddy stood guard, calmly reassuring the other horses and creating a safe space for his new friend.
