"The Dangers of Sago Palms (Cycads)"

Cycads (also known as sago palms) are ornamental palms trees that are VERY common in Florida. All parts of these trees are highly toxic to dogs, especially the red-orange seeds that are found in the spring and summer months. Ingestion of sago palms can cause gastrointestinal, liver, and neurologic toxicities, and may be fatal.

Common clinical signs of sago palm toxicosis include vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, inappetence, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), and sometimes neurologic signs such as weakness, wobbliness/difficulty walking, or seizures. Treatment involves decontamination (e.g. induction of vomiting or gastric lavage) if the ingestion occurred recently. Signs of liver toxicity can take several days to become apparent, at which time supportive care is the only treatment.

If you see your dog ingesting parts of a sago palm, or suspect ingestion may have occurred, seek veterinary care IMMEDIATELY. Time is truly of the essence. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the appearance of sago palms and their seeds so that you can remain vigilant. Even if you do not have these trees in your own yard, wildlife such as squirrels have been known to transport the seeds to other locations.
