This tick spray recipe is from Dr. Andrew Jones. He gave up his vet license in Canada due to being monitored and fined for giving out natural/healthy/non-drug remedies for our dogs and cats. He has a lot of great natural remedies and this is one worth trying.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ticks have been bad for the past 3 years and getting worse each year. Commercial, chemical tick deterrent drugs are harmful and dangerous for our pets but so are ticks so finding a good natural way to repel them is important. You will have a harder time using natural products like this one is you are not following a natural care program for your dog. As everything seems to be getting worse, ticks, fleas, and chronic illnesses, there is no better time to change the level of care for your dog.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
"Controlling Ticks is challenging, but healthier animals DO repel pests better. Nutrition is the foundation for health. Efforts to improve your pet’s nutrition and supplement with a vitamin, preferably a whole food supplement can help your pet repel these pests and greatly reduce your chances for re-infestation in the future.

Some supplements of particular value when fighting pests include probiotics and digestive enzymes to help your pet make the most of his meal, and they may make your pet “less tasty”.

Dr Jones' NEW Turmeric Oil Natural Tick Repellent Spray

One recent study looked at 10 different essential oils, looking at the repellent properties of these oils. One oil came out way on top: the paper's titled Preventing Tick Attachment to Dogs using Essential Oils.

Turmeric root essential oil had the best tick repelling properties at a relatively very low concentration (2%).

THREE INGREDIENT TICK SPRAY:

1. Base of the spray is Witch Hazel with aloe. It's a great skin oil and it forms a great base for any type of flee or tick spray. It can decrease inflammation that may be happening from a pest infestation.

2. Liquid coconut oil. Some of the fats within coconut oil such as lauric acid, have demonstrated pest repellent properties, and it also makes a great base binding the turmeric essential oil so they can evenly spread throughout the tick spray.

3. Turmeric essential oil - of all the essential oils studied it came on on top of having the best tick repellent properties.
Recipe

- Witch Hazel with Aloe: 100ml (7 tablespoons)
- Liquid Coconut oil: 30ml (2 tablespoons)
- Turmeric Essential Oil: 2.5ml (50 drops)
This produces a 2% concentration of turmeric essential oil, making it safe for dogs
- Shake well each time before spraying.
- Use liquid coconut oil, and you still may need to warm this if your house is cold.
- Lightly mist your dog/cat, then use a flea comb to spread it through the fur.
- Can be applied 2-3 times/week for a dog, but best to only use once a week for cats."

MEDICAL ALERT

RESEARCH
HOW DOG FOODS ARE CAUSING LIVER DISEASE
In 2021, Cornell University circulated a report to veterinarians telling them that pet foods are causing liver damage at an alarming rate.

Here's how AAFCO and pet food makers allowed this problem to happen ... and how you can protect your dog from copper toxicity.

HOW COPPER HARMS DOGS
Copper is an essential trace mineral - which means dogs can't make it and need to get it in their diet. Copper is involved in activating enzymes that pretty much run every metabolic function in the dog's body - plus it helps build red blood cells and grows healthy connective tissue, skin and coats.

When dogs get too much dietary copper (which is called copper toxicity), the copper accumulates in the liver and can cause inflammation and damage. This can scar the liver and, over time, it causes liver failure and even death.

The problem with liver inflammation is that most dog owners have no idea it's happening because dogs don't show symptoms until the damage is really advanced.

The only reliable early sign is changes in the ALT levels. As the liver damage progresses, dog owners might see abdominal swelling, diarrhea, loss of appetite, jaundice, increased thirst and vomiting. But by that time, the damage is fairly serious.

In a nutshell, liver disease is a hidden disease that typically goes unnoticed until it's too late. Even if your dog's ALT levels are high, vets rarely consider copper toxicity as a cause.

COPPER LEVELS RISING IN DOG FOODS
Back in 1929, researchers looked at how much copper was stored in the dog's liver. On average, they found about 10 ug/g. In 1982, the average rose to a massive 200 ug/g ... and in 1995, copper levels were up to 453 ug/g. So the amount of copper in the average dog's liver doubled in just 13 years and continues to rise.

As a result, dogs today are walking around with livers that are equivalent to those of alcoholics.

HOW MANY DOGS ARE AFFECTED?
One of the authors of the Cornell study found that 58% of liver biopsies showed signs of inflammatory liver disease and averaged more than 400 ug/g copper concentration.

So it's estimated that more than half of dogs could be affected by excess copper.

HOW IS COPPER GETTING INTO DOGS?
When researchers looked into the issue of copper toxicity, they first looked for breed-specific diseases. But that wasn't the cause. In fact, the amount of copper in dogs' livers was directly related to the amount in their diet.

This was a surprise since all of the foods met the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) nutritional requirements.

AAFCO sets nutrient guidelines for pet food manufacturers - but in most cases, AAFCO nutritional requirements are based on minimum amounts only. They look at the minimum amount a dog needs to get by without overt signs of disease.

When it comes to most nutrients, AAFCO has not set a maximum allowable amount. And this is the case with copper.

The minimum copper requirement for adult dogs is 7.3 mg/kg but dog food makers are free to put as much copper in the food as they want - as long as they meet the minimum requirement.

WHY IS COPPER ON THE RISE?
Why are pet food manufacturers putting so much copper in their food? And why is there more and more every year? There are a number of reasons for this ...

Many of the nutrients in pet foods are lost in the heating and processing. Foods can suffer a 40% loss in copper (as well as other nutrients). To compensate for this, pet food manufacturers add something called a premix to their foods.

A premix is a bag of vitamins and minerals that is intended to either replace the nutrients that are lost during processing or add them to foods with low quality ingredients. These premixes contain an assortment of vitamins and minerals and the mix is usually just added to dog foods – often in excess since AAFCO is mainly concerned about minimum nutrition requirements.

To compound this issue, most premixes used an inorganic form of copper (copper oxide). But 15 years ago, AAFCO worried about this because copper oxide has terrible bioavailability in dogs.

At the time, there were no reports of copper deficiency in dogs – and the amounts of copper were already rising in dogs' livers. Despite this, AAFCO recommended a much more bioavailable form of copper be used in pet foods –like copper sulfate. They did this without any peer-reviewed studies or re-evaluating the minimum requirements.

Since then, dog foods contain even more bioavailable organic forms of copper like copper chelate – especially the premium brands since these forms of copper are more expensive.

To make matters worse, a lot of dog foods today are adding foods that are innately rich in copper. The worst offender is liver – but copper is also naturally rich in fish and seafood, chickpeas and sweet potatoes.

HOW DO YOU FIND EXCESS COPPER?
Pet foods aren't required to report the amount of copper on pet food labels. So if you're worried about copper toxicity (and you should be), then you need to ask your manufacturer for a nutritional analysis that shows the amount of copper in their food.

If they don't give it to you, then just keep asking until you find a manufacturer that will tell you the amount of copper in their food. Ideally, the copper shouldn't be too much higher than AAFCO's recommended minimum, which is 7.3 mg/kg for adult dogs and 12.4 mg/kg for puppies.

There are some dog foods that are low in copper, but they're often low in protein too so they're not a good choice.

So here we are again with mosquitoes and more... How do you protect your dog from heartworm. Knowing how heartworm is gotten is important. No dog living in OH can get heartworm year around. This article will explain how this simply can't happen. So if you are determined to give a heartworm preventative drug, then do it during mosquito season only and then stop.

It's important to know what you are giving your dog. How the drug works, what is does to the mosquito and what it does to the mosquito's host. Risk versus benefit. Do you really have to use a toxic drug to protect your dog?

There are natural products that repel mosquitoes and there is a natural treatment should your dog become infected. It's a win/win to stop using toxic products.

How we were ever convinced that we should use high powered drugs with major side effects, even death, to protect our dogs is beyond me. You can't protect and harm at the same time.

Do you know the dangers of heartworm medication? Here's a look at the reported side effects of some of the most popular heartworm drugs ...

We have said this soooo many times. Stop using these leashes! We have heard story after story about injuries from these leashes and seen the scars. Not only are they unsafe for your dog but they are dangerous for humans. Get a 6 foot leash and ditch this forever.

FALSE. While the purpose of a leash is to keep your pet safe and under your control, a retractable leash often achieves the opposite effect! 👎❌

15/03/2024

Tick-borne diseases are scary, but what is even scarier is how many pet parents have been told these flea/tick chemicals are completely safe. Adverse reports from isoxazoline based products (Trifexis, NexGard, Bravecto, Credelio, Simparica Trio) are especially alarming since it's estimated only 1% of adverse reactions are reported.

The first step is to understand your pets risk.
- What does a tick bite look like?
- Which tick species are important to know?
- What diseases can ticks transmit to dogs and cats?

From there, it is important to find safer alternatives that prevent tick-borne diseases! There are many options to choose from.

Recent studies found 90% of dogs will develop periodontal disease 😱 This is bad news, because disease in the mouth often leads to disease in the heart 🫀, kidneys, and liver.
But here’s the good news: chewing certain types of bones 🦴can remove up to 90% of dental tartar!
Researchers found that specific bones removed tartar without causing injury to teeth, and they concluded that certain bones should be part of the home oral health care plan for dogs, along with tooth-brushing. And since many dogs consider this form of oral hygiene a treat (in fact, they’re called “recreational bones” because they are meant to be gnawed on, but not chewed and swallowed) it’s easy to get your dog on board for this healthy habit 🙌
In our new book, The Forever Dog LIFE, we give you more science-backed tips, recipes, and doable how-tos for taking care of your dog’s 🐶(and cat’s!🐱) body, inside and out, like a DIY toothpaste 🪥to help keep those pearly whites tip top!

Many of the “normal” ranges were developed using pets consuming an inappropriate, cereal-based diet.

It is important for you and your veterinarian to understand the accepted norms for your pet. Here are some values that may be different for your raw-fed dog:
⬆️ Creatinine (Cr)
⬆️ Hematocrit (PCV)
⬆️ Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
⬇️ Triglycerides (LDL)
⬇️ Blood Sugar

This is a lengthy article BUT it's so important! Hopefully it will encourage pet parents to start to look at the studies and facts that are proving that our routine ways of "caring" for our dogs are actually harming our dogs.

Natural care providers, natural care professionals and natural care vets have been aware of these problems for many years. When you foster literally thousands of dogs harmed by toxic "preventatives", cocktail vaccines, over vaccination, over drug use, etc., when you see all these diseases like cancer, diabetes, Cushing's and Addison's disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, etc and all these chronic conditions (ear infections, skin infections, arthritis, pancreatitis, etc.) exploding in the pet world, there is no denying that what we put in our dogs bodies: processed food and all the toxins we subject them to in our homes and in our yards and in our vet's offices, are undermining the health of our dogs and in some cases actually causing their death.

How do we balance factual information with protection? Are pet parents going to have to lead the charge to make some changes? Where will each of us fall in the full spectrum.. from no vaccines to maybe just the core ones, no boosters to boostering when titers are low? (check out how memory cells work to make the decision whether boostering is necessary and worth the risk) We can't make these decisions without facts, without reading studies (legit ones), without investigating the relationship between pharmaceutical companies and vet schools and on and on. We should not have to be asking why our dog would start having seizures after being given Bravecta, or Advantage, etc. since the FDA but out an Alert in 2018 and in 2022 to warn that neurological problems including seizures were linked with these types of "preventatives". We should know these things. I would hope that our vets would share this kind of information with us so as pet guardians WE can decide to use these products or not use them. It appears to have fallen to the pet parent to gather knowledge to make decisions to truly protect their pets.

Let's step up. Let's make this year a year of gathering knowledge, asking questions, finding mentors, following internationally renown vets that promote a safer and healthier path of our pets... like Dr. Karen Becker, Dr. Judy Morgan, Dr. Robert Goldstein, Dr. Ron Schultz, Dr. Richard Pitcarin. Learn from vets that have dedicated a lifetime to finding non harmful ways to protect our four legged friends.

Dog over vaccination is a well known problem, and research is showing why. A team at Purdue University studied the changes in the immune system of dogs.

Stop the food immediately.
The FDA is investigating the issue. Report it to the FDA: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/report-problem/how-report-pet-food-complaint
Contact your veterinarian. Request a copy of your pet's medical records. Report your concerns to the pet food company and ask your vet to do the same.

This began with a significant rise in consumer reports of sick pets eating Purina pet food. We are now seeing the same symptoms across different brands of pet food which happened previously when there was contamination at the supplier level - multiple brands purchased the same contaminated material.

SAVE THE PET FOOD. Do NOT agree to send the pet food company the food. If you feel compelled to do so, only send a small portion. Keep the rest of the food in the freezer in original packaging. Do NOT send the medical records to the pet food company. Document your conversation with the pet food company.

The pet food company may offer to pay your vet bills and reimburse you for your pet food. If you agree to this they will ask you to sign a form which will prohibit you from taking legal action. If there is a class action lawsuit you will be unable to join if you do this or if you want to take your own legal action.

Star-Mar Rescue Natural Care & Star-Mar Rescue friends!

Bunny Is READY! she's ready for her new home!

We would love to place her in one of our exceptional Star-Mar Rescue affiliated homes! Our Star-Mar Rescue adopters are the BEST! Winter is one of my favorite times to bring a new little one into the home because it allows you to hunker down and work on training inside, not have so many outside distractions and many of us are already having a lot of 'couch time' 😉

This is an exceptionally beautiful and sweet puppy! She's not going to be that big, is SMART AS A WHIP! and will be with your for many, many years to come!

Bunny is an extremely cute, fluffy and energetic miniature Poodle (possible Chinese Crested Powder Puff) 19 week old puppy. She is ALL about running, playing, chewing and wrestling with her foster brother. Bunny is great in the bathtub, almost 100% housebroken (when kept on her schedule) and clean in her crate if taken out every 4 hours. She is clean overnight. Bunny is kept in her crate overnight and while her foster parents are out in order to keep her SAFE.

The breeder said that Bunny is a Mini Poodle. At first we wondered if she was a mix but no longer. She weighs about 7 pounds. She still has her puppy coat so it is hard to say what her adult coat will be like but we would expect it to be continuous growing, require regular grooming. We cannot say that she will not shed. Bunny is not the right dog for anyone who is allergic.

Since Bunny has only been in her foster home for a little over a week, she still needs some learning/training and socialization. Bunny came from a puppy mill and is shy to humans somewhat. Like a typical mill dog, she sometimes hides when you want to pick her up. She’ll flatten down but has no issues once you pick her up and LOVES to be held, cuddle on the couch and gives kisses. It’s just the initial walking up to her to pick her up that’s scary to her.

Bunny will have her wellness check on the 29th of January. We feel that she will then be ready to start her new life in her forever home. She is a bit timid as all puppy mill puppies are. They have lacked being regularly handled and loved on and have not had normal experiences with all the things puppies encounter in a healthy environment. BUT .. the good news is that the sooner they get into a routine in their forever home the sooner they learn all things puppy.
Here is what these puppies need to flourish... A calm home. By that we don't mean a home where no one comes or goes. It does mean a home where there is not a lot of commotion; no children, no rambunctious dogs, no drama. 🙂 They also need to be with someone that will expose them to different experiences and environments. Trps to the store, take them to their family's and friend's homes, rides in the car. Introduce them to all things new in a safe and healthy way. So, we're looking for a calm home with a social, active/semi-active person.
If you're on this page you know we are natural care providers and adopt to those that practice this level of care. We feed a balaned, raw diet, frozen or freeze dried. We very minimally vaccinate, use zero chemical/toxic flea, tick and mosquito "preventatives". This means nothing that is sold by your vet. We use no chemicals in our yards and in our homes.
If you would like more information on natural care please go to Star-Mar Rescue Natural Care page where you'll find a number of articles, studies, etc. In the column on the left side of the page click on videos and watch the video series The Truth About Pet Cancer. It is about how to keep your dog healthy and why limiting or eliminating things in our dog's life is important.
Bunny will need a fenced area that leads directly from the house. Big enouhg for her to potty and to run and play. This can be your entire yard or a smaller fenced area that goes off of your deck or patio.
Bunny needs a lot of stimulation, interaction and a lot of love to catch her up. Her person will need to be someone who works from home and can have a puppy in their work space or is retired.
The breeder said that Bunny is a Mini Poodle. At first we wondered if she was a mix but no longer. She weighs about 7 pounds and is 19 weeks old. She still has her puppy coat so it is hard to say what her adult coat will be like but we would expect it to be continuious growing, require regular grooming. We cannot say that she will not shed. Bunny is not the right dog for anyone who is allergic.
Bunny is working on housetraining and doing great with a routine. She is crate trained but will occasionally ti**le a bit.
We always list our dogs on our page before we list on Petfinder or AdoptApet so if you or someone you know might be interested please contact Martha at 330-466-3667 or [email protected] for more information.
PLEASE make sure that you understand the kind of home we are looking for and can offer that to Bunny. The right fit is important. A happy, healthy puppy has a happy human.
The first two photos were just taken. The last one is the day we took Bunny into rescue less than a week ago.

Consider getting your pet food tested:(https://truthaboutpetfood.com/help-to-check-your-pet-food/) This would be helpful if you want to pursue legal action.

Purina has already been notified by numerous pet owners and they have not done anything to alert unsuspecting pet parents. Initially, there were offering to reimburse the pet owners for their pet food. Currently, they are offering pet parents $10 in coupons (which is what Hills offered me for my dead dog) and having a third party contact the pet parents.

Eventually, we may see Purina pet food become “unavailable” on the store shelves. This is called a silent recall. The pet food manufacturer doesn’t want to admit there is a problem with the product, so they start pulling the products off the shelves quietly. (Hills did this for 60 days before the recall)."

Star-Mar Rescue is a natural care provider. We use no chemicals on our dogs, no commercial flea products (oral or topical), do blood titers instead of randomly vaccinating. Our yards are without fertilizer and w**d killer and our homes are toxin free. We feel that dogs can be protected without being harmed by harsh chemicals and unnecessary vaccinations and do best on a species appropriate, no grain, raw diet whether that be a frozen raw, freeze dried food. We are happy to talk with you about caring for your dogs in a way that keeps them happy and healthy long into their senior years. We place our dogs into homes that are already practicing natural care or homes that are eager to learn. We are convinced that natural care adds years to our dog's lives. We are happy to share with you ways to keep your dog healthy and happy for well into their teens and even into their 20's.
