Update on the flight pen. As many of you know this past year I raised Tibetan coturnix quail that came from flight stock. The birds were raised in a 40 foot long a 6 foot high flight pen(pics in comments ). This was a learning experience in more than one way.
1. I do not think the pen was long enough or high enough. The birds seemed to learn that they could just flop their wings a little to get to the other end when I entered.
2. In no time the ground was just dirt which worked well for dusting but no cover.
3. I think much larger waterers and feeders where I would not have had to enter the pen daily would lead to more wild/skiddish birds.
4. Raising birds is not cost efficient with how much feed prices have gone up. I cannot imagine how much $ game bird preserves and game bird sellers will be forced to charge to make any profit.
5. This was a learning experience and some birds flew very well and some even flushed well when you got close and didn't even require kicking around and of course some were "duds " LOL. They seemed to do better out of the launcher.
6. Our next experience will be using Tennessee Reds in johnny houses. Hopefully, i'll get strong flying birds and it will be much more cost efficient.
Definitely gonna have to take some fish out this year.
These little guys are doing great! Walking around with high tails and receiving lots of bucket time. I can never over stress how important "bucket time" is. For newcomers to my page I call bucket time sitting your butt on that feed bucket and taking time to play with the puppies. Socialization is the first vital step in creating a good bird dog. It is unbelievable how often I hear of people receiving dogs from well known kennels that are shy as can be. I hear it from their customers as well as transporters.
Sure is relaxing sitting on the bucket feeding the catfish. I think I'm gonna have to thin the herd some this year.
