Judy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.

Food for thought. What is not on here is this; When you keep a dog familiar to a creight through-out its life. When it becomes old and incontinent, blind and or dementia happens. Even if you never close the door and provide bedding with special treats in it. The creight provides a safe familar place to sleep at night, which relieves stress for you and your best furry friend. Just something to think about!

Why crate train your dog?

A dog who is properly crate trained sees their crate as a happy place because it gives them a sense of security and familiarity.

Crate training is also a highly effective management system that can be a lifesaver for dog parents.
Like any training method, crating can be abused. But using a crate for appropriate time periods is helpful with a variety of important goals, including preventing destructive behavior, potty training, and teaching a dog to relax.

If a dog is taught through positive reinforcement to love the crate, it then becomes their own private safe haven. The crate is a place that they can go and not be bothered, which is the perfect solution for when your dog is tired or nervous. Because dogs are natural den animals, they often will learn to love a crate very easily with the proper training.

Hello, my name is Molly and I need a forever home. I am about 10. No one would guess my age because I am very strong and healthy. I obviously love water, wading, not swimming - I want my feet to touch the bottom. Life is simply fun is to me. A few other older dogs live in the other part of the house but I don’t always get along with them. I really want that special person who thinks I am special as well. Please message if interested and help me find this dog a forever home. She does not need a foster.

PAW Care in the Cold
A few Simple guidelines

1. Grooming - Do not shave up underneath the pads, they need the hair for protection
2. If the snow crunches, put boots on for long periods of time outdoors.
3. Any temperature around 10 degrees or below freezing, put boots on evan for a few minutes. This rule will vary abit depending on the breed of dog and hair density under the foot.
4. There are products you can purchase for conditioning and protecting the pad but here is a home made recipe.

This was written by: Kathryn Sode-Dunning

Yields six 1-oz jars

You’ll need:

• Small pot and glass bowl or double broiler

• 2 oz olive oil

• 2 oz coconut oil

• 1 oz shea butter

• 4 tsp beeswax

• Optional scent: Use only therapeutic-quality essential oils to meet your personal scent preference. My favorite combination is 3 drops each of lavender, mandarin, and chamomile essential oils.

• Also optional: 1⁄4 tsp vitamin E oil as a preservative

1. Pour an inch or two of water into the bottom of a double boiler, or set a glass measuring cup into a pot of water so that the glass bottom is submerged and the top is exposed. Bring the water to a simmer.

2. Add coconut oil, olive oil, and shea butter to the glass cup or the top of the double boiler.

3. As the mixture warms and melts together, add the beeswax. When the beeswax begins to float to the top, stir the mixture continuously.

5. Set out six 1-oz jars and add the essential oils (and optional vitamin E for increased shelf life) to each jar.

6. Pour the melted base into the jars. Stir lightly (a chopstick works well for this) to mix the essential oil and vitamin E into the base.

7. Cover with breathable material (e.g., cheese cloth) and cool until they harden.

Enjoy for one long, cold winter (longer if you add the vitamin E).

Have fun and stay warm

As a Certified Master Groomer, Certified in Opptisage and Certified Trainer with 40 years of professional service, I can provide consultations regarding your pet's behavior, professional grooming, pet sitting, and a self serve place for you to bathe your dog comfortably.

My goal is to educate you to be able to maintain the grooming of your pet. When you increase the home care of your dog, you decrease your yearly grooming expenses. You also increase quality time spent with your dog which decreases problematic behaviors. While this does not eliminate the need for professional grooming, it does increase your pet's quality of life.

DOGSBE provides the place and space for you to easily brush, comb, bathe, and groom your pet without the drawbacks of back pain, clogged drains, and the necessary bathroom clean up afterwards. When you bathe your dog more often, your dog leaves less hair and doggy odor in your house. Using the correct shampoo along with a thorough rinse afterwards helps to maintain the health of your dog's skin and coat.
