Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

This is why I always recommend to my students, try, repeat, persevere. You will have your positive results sooner.
The following post is a testimony of what I compete and Iave today. A truly wonderful and happy dog.
This was posted 6 years ago. She is now 8.5 years old.

Enjoy the story and keep in mind to be patient and persevere.

Well, I am trying to take Moka to every place I can and let dogs in, to see if she gets more confident and loses that fear at least 90 %. She is 2.5 years old. She loves her mommy. She likes agility but she is very insecure when it comes to be in a new environment. What is the formula for me to make her mind calm and enjoy the time, place, people, dogs, air, etc while in that particular place? Am I going against natural situations impossible to change? I am not discouraging myself but my mind sees all this and I question myself, am I doing it right?
I took Moka today to a dropping basic agility class to the DTCT and she was not able to calm down. We practiced with the leash on and she did all the contacts, jumps, even though some part of the weaves (very difficult to do with a leash on) you can tell she likes it. Part of her mind is telling her, yeah girl! You're great at this, you like it BUT her other part of the mind is in so much stress and fear that it does not let her to enjoy it and be a normal cute dog.
At the end of the class she was not shaking and seems to be calmer, apparently but I think is because she was so exhausted being in so much stress.
I bet she will love the place after her 3rd visit so I ask to myself: will we be able to compete one day on a real trial? Can you imagine getting in the ring and she is full of nerves wanting to flee the place because her mind is going a 100 miles per hour for a reason humans do not understand? I keep trying and trying and I will enjoy those moments where she is a real calm dog. Meanwhile, I still learning about this fearful dog and different ways to make her successful. Good night.

I wrote this story about my dog Moka 6 years ago in my personal FB. Well, FB brought it up. This happened in 2017 on March 4.
This reminds me how much one has to work with our dogs to keep them happy and calm.

Anyone who knows Moka is a aware of her fear to noises and new places. Well, today we tried a new place to do agility. The ring is open, on grass, fenced. She came out the car fine but when we were approaching the field, she started getting stressed and stressed and stressed. The first two runs, we did it with the leash on so she could feel conformable in this new place. In the beginning, I took the leash off and she wanted to flee the place. I sat down on the grass under a tree against the trunk and she was all over me. She wanted to hide. I tried to distract her to calm her mind and the only thing that worked was getting next to the other calmed dogs. The first dog I approached that was next to us. her name Gracie, an Aussie. I started to pet the dog and used calm soft voice but happy. When Moka saw me doing that and the Aussie was enjoying it, she started to relax. Then, I did it with another mixed breed dog, a big one, and she got better. Her tail starting to come out and up and she was begging the handler for treats. I did the same exercise with Ben a standard poodle and our Queso. Vikki’s dog. Wow! What a change for Moka. Then, we did 2 more runs and what a difference!. We did it without a leash and she follow my commands. We did the jumps, dog walk, teeter, table, tunnel, and we tried once the weaves but yet, she is not ready for all the weaves closed. She is at 1/2 " open and unfortunately the ones they have today are anchored, can't be opened or closed. I am very happy what we did today and also very proud of her. I am trying another place next week to see how she does. The more I can expose her to different places, she will get more confident and her fear will diminish significantly. Crossing my fingers and working with my girl everyday. Feeling happy and blessed to find out what is making her conformable in unfamiliar places.

One thing I can assure my self, my student and potential customers how important is to connect with your dog and how calm, assertive, secure, knowledgeable you need to be about what you are doing and about your dog to be succeful but that only is conquered if you practice, practice and have fun with your dog.
