Sanctuary for Seniors is our mission, so last night at 1115 PM, we welcomed Ohio Minnie, "Pearl," to the family. It wasn't our intention, but she was out of time, had nowhere else to go, and, given her age and that back leg, was out options - except on to another auction, but at her age (2001) she couldn't have done too many more.

She's been started on hay, water, and antibiotics. She's happily standing in her stall, munching away.

Do you love the old guys like we do? There is more information coming out on the definition of old, the physical/mental changes that occur in seniors, and the care they require.

According to the Rutgers Equine Science Center horses are considered old starting at 15, but physiologically between 18-20.

We firmly believe in the "Happy Ears" theory. Horses know when they are safe, and Saw Bones' ears tell the tale.

He is safely tucked into his Forever Foster home, showing off his stylish new blanket, and now living his best life.

Yes Yes we know... Stay in our swim lane, but seniors ARE our swim lane and this plain bay Standardbred mare named Ohio Minnie needs some help. She's dealer owned on a lot in Belfast, NY. Her fee has been paid, but she needs to get to where she's going, and requires some support once she arrives. We have a blanket in the works for her so she stays toasty while arrangements are made.

As you know, we've moved away from active rescue for various reasons, but when a forever foster reaches out and asks for help saving a horse, we're happy to do it. Bravo Zulu to Marj for leading the effort in getting Saw Bones saved. We're honored to have played a supporting role.

They are not horses but they are a bonded pair. This is our resident red-tail hawks. We see them regularly sharing the sanctuary with our other residents.

Cali (Yira) is fully recovered and ready for her new adventure. She will be available to an approved home who is knowledgeable in restarting Thoroughbreds. We are in no rush so only the perfect home will do for this special girl. What a difference a couple months of care makes ♡

I left work and called the vet at 2:27, but before I could even get a vet in route I got a call at 3:00 he had passed... in his field surrounded by his herd. ❤️ Forever in our hearts.
