This little guy just cracks me up.

I always called him the “Chonk” but he is also known as the “Chunk” here too. He’s become a dependable little ranch horse. I mostly deal with starting and working young horses, but very occasionally a mature horse will find its way into my program. This sweet little bay had a short time with me before finding his current home. It’s sure been fun to watch him be used and enjoyed by his people.

Chonk is owned by Justin Kiel.

Had a fun c**t working day yesterday with Brittany Wright and Marty Penrod.

I finally got around to putting a first ride on Riggs, my two year old stud c**t. Started playing with him on the ground first until we had some quality feel, then I introduced him to the bag for the first time. He didn’t care a bit about the bag, and was more curious than anything. Then I took Riggs up to my shed and saddled him for the first time, and he didn’t do a thing. He just led away from the shed quietly with the saddle on snug. We went to the round pen and I worked him under saddle very briefly, then stepped on him. Wowzers, what a brain on this c**t!

While we were putting together a first ride, Marty was in the round pen with us on Brittany’s big buckskin c**t, Zeus. Riggs did super well with all the pressure from the other horse, and we figured out how to step hinds, introduced stepping fronts, turned to the inside and outside of the circle, stopped and flexed to a stop, and moved out at a walk and trot in both directions before calling it quits. I’m so impressed by this c**t, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how he continues to progress.

Video coming soon!

Had a good day Sunday shipping for Vassau’s!

Pictured is Joe Vassau on his 6-year-old gelding, Sully. This horse started my interest in the Oswald/High Rolling Roany horses. I purchased this guy as a coming 2-year-old and started him in the c**t starting class my second year in MCC’s Equine Program. He was such a doll, and one of the nicest c**ts I’ve ever had the opportunity to start. I rode him for a couple years and Joe purchased him as a 4-year-old. Sully has grown up a ton, and is at least the size of Pete, but still such a sweetheart.

I rode Pete on the gather and during the sorting of cows and calves in the corral. He’s sure gotten fun with his sorting. Itchy came along too, and he helped with counting calves out into the alley while trucks were loaded. All in all it was a good day, and so cool to see Sully working under saddle.

These little babies are pretty funny to have around! My little guy (pictured), and Debby’s filly have learned that humans mean scratches, and scratches are AMAZING. My little guy has been trying to play the “you can’t catch me” game to no avail, but when it’s his idea to be “caught” he is all over me for attention.

Debby’s filly has found that she can follow me around for scratches, offering that behavior for the first time this morning. She has really come along!

After helping John Moore ship October 10, I went on a mission with Marty Penrod and Brittany Wright to drop Marty’s c**t Zee Zee off the divide with my two 2-year-olds on summer pasture. It was a blast of a ride!

I rode my good gelding Pete and started out ponying Marty on Brittany’s 5-year-old gelding Zeus, and Brittany rode her gelding Boomer and ponied Zee Zee. Just for the record, this was Zeus’s FIFTH ever ride, and his first ride outside. Leave it to a former bull rider to ride a c**t out like this!

We found my boys Smooch and Dill, and left Zee Zee with them. It was a blast watching all the c**ts interact with each other. What a great group of geldings!

I haven’t had a chance to introduce the current little kids at the pasture!

The shapey filly on the right belongs to Debby Gorrell. She’s by Awesome Roany out of a Rolling Jax Copper daughter, and is actually a full sister to my 2-year-old stud c**t Coach, AQHA Awesome Jax Prairie. I took her in to do a little baby boot camp, to help get her gentled down. She was VERY anxious and wild when we made our trip a few weeks ago to buy young horses from Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program over in North Dakota. Once she got to my pasture a week ago, this filly went from absolutely freaking out and trying to find a way to get out of her pen when I drove into my yard to letting me catch her and pet her all over in about a week of short sessions. She’s still a little suspicious, but she’s starting to soften to the idea of people, and REALLY enjoys being scratched and loved on. We’ve been working on catching, leading, tying, and desensitizing. We worked on picking up and holding feet for a few seconds at a time last night, and she did really well!

My little weanling dude on the left is a son of Awesome Roany and out of a Rolling Jax Copper daughter also, making him at least a 3/4 brother to Debby’s filly, my 2-year old stud c**t Riggs, and my yearling fillies Cake and Soda. He is a 1/2 brother to Pete and the first Hetletved bred horse I owned years ago, a sweet gelding named Sully. I didn’t intend to purchase a weanling when we went on our trip, but I just couldn’t leave this guy behind. He has such a bold, quiet personality! I have really enjoyed these Awesome Roany horses and I know what they can become after riding a couple of them. They’re my type of critter!

Both these kids still need names. Debby’s filly has been referred to as the “Grumpy filly,” but I think she’s more special than that!

The boys at work have been out fencing the last couple days.

Itchy did really well out there in the big country yesterday. He had great rate while I walked the fenceline from post to post, pounding staples. I’ve always enjoyed this little bay’s personality!

Jack had some attitude today, but once he realized he wasn’t getting what he wanted with his crabbiness, he did a really nice job fencing too. Jack was so happy to go somewhere under saddle. This dude was really wanting to move out and cover some ground, and he’s a really smooth ride!

Itchy is a super nice young gelding with a solid foundation out on the ranch. He is extremely personable with a trainable, kind disposition. I haven’t found a horse easier to catch! Itchy has been ridden in a variety of situations and some pretty wild terrain, and is very confident on cattle. He is a fantastic calving horse, handling dragging the sled and curious heifers with ease. Itchy even has a cue to get calves up off the ground to check health. He also has a cue to ask him to lay down. He’s fun to rope on, and has drug calves to the fire. He handles the commotion of the branding pen, including holding calves on the Nordfork. Itchy can be a little spooky on his right side occasionally under saddle out in the big country, but a confident rider should get along with him fine.

Itchy can be uppity with time off, but he isn’t a bronc. Itchy is well started driving, with several really successful drives in my single two-wheeled cart. He’s not bothered by vehicles passing, including trains, and has been an absolute blast to harness up and drive. He’s been helping me expose c**ts and client horses to town by ponying them in the cart. Itchy is high in the pecking order, but once the hierarchy is established he doesn’t go out of his way to pick on others.

Itchy goes back to Blue Boy Hancock and Doc Olena twice on the top, with a shot of King Fritz, and he is out of a Hollywood Dun It, CD Olena, Peppy San Badger mare. His pedigree is stacked, and he is super cool on cattle, with a natural rate and feel for them. He is exceptionally fun to chase cattle down on, and could go to the roping pen pretty easily.

Itchy sells freeze-branded Lazy K M Over Bar on his left shoulder. He is good to catch, trim, and trailer. He’s up to date on vaccinations, worming, and trimming. He’s okay to shoe. Vet checks welcome at buyer’s expense. Buyer responsible for shipping, and Coggins and Health paperwork if outside of the state of Montana.

Serious inquiries are welcome to message me on Facebook on my personal page Katelyn Matzen or on my horse page at Lazy K M Over Bar Horsemanship for questions about this horse or others for sale. Thank you for your time.

Need to do some more dirt and drainage work of course, but all in all I’m pretty proud of what this little place is becoming! It’s shaping up, and starting to look like what I had envisioned.

Two water tanks serve three small pens and a dry lot, so I finally have the ability to separate horses out in a convenient way and not have to fight water as much during the winter.

Currently the bum calf, Slurp, is my buffer between the stud c**ts and the mares, while the c**ts await a gelding date. With any luck the whole bunch can run together in a few months in the dry lot!

The red feeder panels are an absolute godsend. I’m not convinced there’s a better way to feed a bunch of horses while cutting down on waste considerably. But in the smaller pens, my inside-out tractor tires will do.

My favorite part about this setup (besides the water tanks of course) is the ability to stick a horse in the alley and run them down to the round pen. It allows me to house a horse in a pen instead of having an untouched critter dirty up my round pen. It’s pretty slick!

Kiks owner Rachel Baker came and picked her up on Sunday, and was happy with the overall improvement the little mare had made.

Kiks started out extremely sulled up and spoiled under saddle, to the point where a person couldn’t get much done with her. She was so stuck and pi**ed off that she just would not operate. Kiks ended her time with me in a frame of mind where you could actually do a job with her, and I found that she has so much more willingness to be soft and try in a hackamore. She might be the variety that just isn’t going to work well with a bit. Kiks will now happily saddle up and perform basic maneuvers without having a huge tantrum first, and really likes to move out and cover country. She finally developed a pretty decent feel in the bridle/hackamore.

Looking like Kiks will be back next spring for a refresher.

The new 2-year-old stud c**ts have both earned their names!

The big bay c**t, Riggs, had a fantastic lesson today. He met me at the gate and let me halter him, no worries. We worked on leading, stepping hinds and fronts, and generally moving off my pressure. I introduced desensitizing with the rope, the basics of longing (including going through a gate), and he was tied for the first time. He did spectacular, thinking through the problems I presented him with. He seemed like he was being extra careful to be respectful. I was very pleased with how hard he tried, and how soft and willing he was on the lead. Quite the positive change from offering to kick a few days ago!

The bay roan c**t has been named Gumby. We covered the same things that I presented to Coach today. Gumby was a little more reactive, and far more willing to move out. He seems pretty athletic, while still keeping his mind where it needs to be. He really wants to be your friend!

Yesterday JoJo, Cake, and Soda received a round of trimming! I haven’t been under any of them all summer, and they were pretty decent all around to trim. I pulled them off pasture and got right to it, no groundwork. All three needed at least one reminder that they couldn’t take feet away, then they stood really well for me.

Cake and Soda have sure matured nicely over the summer! I’m looking forward to putting a light start on them this winter/spring.

JoJo is in great shape going into winter. I’m looking forward to seeing what she produces in 2024!

Itchy is back at it!

This guy had an injury to his left knee back in June, and he spent a couple months of the summer on pasture. His vet check 10-5-23 determined that he is sound, X-rays of the knee showed a good joint surface with no abnormalities, and the lump on the front of his left front knee is just a cosmetic blemish and may or may not go away with time. I was happy that he is sound and able to return to work.

I had stepped off him at one point during our ride this morning to ask him to come off this straight-off cutbank onto the gravel bar. He sure handled it well, stepping right off and using himself on the way down. He’s a good boy, and has been a fun ride.

Introducing Awesome Jax Prairie, a super nice bay 2-year-old stud c**t out of Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program in North Dakota. This guy is by Awesome Roany out of a Rolling Jax Copper daughter, with Lonsum Drift 045 on the bottom. He’s a 3/4 brother to my yearling fillies Cake and Soda, and more than a half brother to both my fantastic Pete horse that I’ve been using all summer, and the great gelding Sully that I started through college and sold a few years ago to a good friend.

This bay c**t took a little more time than the other two-year-old to find that I wasn’t such a bad deal, but he’s really wanting to come around quickly. He earned the name “Coach” for himself on Monday, because when I first started in the pen with him he wanted to back up to me and give me both barrels. When that didn’t work and he was reprimanded, he attempted jumping out of the pen to no avail. We then went to work in the round pen, and he found that offering to be dominant and kick at me meant a ton of work headed his way. He eventually found a really nice spot in the round pen, giving to me and finally trying to be soft and yield. He would let me approach him on both sides and pet on his shoulder, back, and neck, but he wasn’t ready for a halter yet. I later named him Riggs.

I was able to halter him in his pen for the first time yesterday and get him wormed during his second session with me. He never offered to set me up to kick during this session. He found out the basics of giving to halter pressure, moving fronts, and even his hinds yesterday, and I introduced lowering his head. He really acts like he wants to be sweet, and isn’t afraid to approach for scratches now. I’m really looking forward to watching this handsome guy’s progress!

An introductory post for High Copper Roan, a super gentle 2-year-old bay roan stud c**t. Hailing from Gene and Jan Hetletved’s program over in North Dakota, this sharp c**t is a son of Coppers High Dasher and out of a Lonsum Drift 045 mare.

He had his first haltering session yesterday evening, and acted like he had been haltered before. He really wanted to come off the pressure and step hinds and fronts, and even started taking forward steps. He was so sweet and quiet, that I was able to worm him and pull tail hairs on him for genetic testing the first time he had a halter on, during his first session with me! He is very inquisitive, and doesn’t act like the spooky type. I’m really looking forward to getting him under saddle.

He’s still earning his barn name!

Kiks got a taste of ranch work on Tuesday when she helped gather for John Moore’s shipping.

The little mare really wants to travel, and is making some nice progress on her ability to traverse country and cross creeks without being silly about it. She has a nice big long trot, and covers ground very efficiently!

After just over 7 miles of an almost nonstop trot, she was very happy to stand tied. And for the first time since she’s come to me, she stood tied with a leg cocked whether there were other horses around or not. She’s making progress!

This was Day 18 and Ride 13 for me and the little mare.

Kiks put in an awesome night ride tonight!

We took off down the trail with 3 four-wheelers, and had a great time, going almost 11 miles on this trip. Most of our ride was in the dark, by headlight. Kiks handled the four-wheelers extremely well, and wasn’t spooky about the headlights. We even got passed by a train and quite a few different vehicles traveling at highway speed, and she handled it all super!

Kiks took a little time when we started out to realize that it was easier to go through the puddles than fight me to go around them, but she quickly found her groove and learned how to really trot out and travel in the variable terrain down this particular ATV two-track. This track is often pretty muddy in places, and Kiks eventually found how to cross the deeper wet spots with confidence and good control of her feet. I was very pleased with how she ended this ride!

As I spent some time pulling cactus spines out of Itchy’s back and sides the other day, all I could think of was that line from the hyenas in the original version of The Lion King, “What, do you want me to come out looking like you? Cactus butt?!”

Hopefully Itchy takes a look at where he’s going to roll next time.

02/10/2023

The two current client horses have been working on their trailering skills lately.

The 7-year-old chestnut mare Kiks had a lesson a few days ago on loading and backing out with quality. She was good to load, but when asked to unload backwards she wanted to panic and rush out, often half-falling out or going out sideways. Positive behavior was rewarded, and the rushing was reprimanded with a short bit of work before returning immediately to the trailer. She quickly found what I was looking for, and got a lot more quality about her trailering manners. Kiks also had trouble facing forward in the trailer even when tied to the front, so we worked on that too. She gets very anxious and claustrophobic about being asked to turn back around and face forward like she’s supposed to, and will flail around a bit when she feels stuck. She found that flailing wasn’t getting her what she wanted, and eventually settled in and rode with a little more confidence.

The 3-year-old buckskin gelding Jack meanwhile, has been doing the ranchy thing. He’s been dealing with trailers a lot over the last couple weeks getting to and from cattle, and is getting to be the old pro. He will ride loose or tied, forwards or backwards. This c**t just isn’t bothered by much of anything, and handles the trailer great.

These two critters are client horses, with Kiks belonging to Rachel Baker and Jack belonging to Debbie Gorrell.

The yearling fillies came in off pasture this week!

Cake and Soda spent the summer together on a nice piece of hilly pine country. They both matured considerably over the summer.

Both girls needed a little help with a bunch of hitchhikers, though, as they were loaded with cockleburs and sand burs. I got them all out eventually, and both girls were very patient with me while I worked on them. Soda is pictured before her de-burring began!

An introductory post for Kiks! Here Itchy is pictured pulling my little cart out in a local parking lot, with Kiks in tow.

Kiks is a 7-year-old quarter horse mare belonging to Rachel Baker. This little mare is here for a tune-up and a much needed attitude adjustment. Kiks is more or less broke, having been to a couple different people for training before me. After two weeks with me, she’s finally settling into being worked consistently, but it took some time to get to this frame of mind. In the beginning, Kiks was very pissy about not being able to get her way, and we had a couple big sessions working on her rude, belligerent, and self-destructive behavior. When we started working together, she would try to throw herself into my round pen panels if she was at all restricted, offer to run me over and/or kick at me on the ground, or even lay down under saddle because she was SO sulled up. We are finally reaching a place where she is a little more willing to work with me, and she’s actually willing to try when I ask her to do something instead of just telling me no straightaway. She’s actually starting to get fun to ride!

Itchy, meanwhile, harnessed up and took off in the cart like a good boy after sitting for a month and a half. I didn’t warm him up at all, just hitched him up and went! He is so much fun to drive, and I was very impressed for his 9th ever drive in the cart!

I am having such a fun time with this c**t! If all outside horses were like this dude, I would be happy to do it full time.

Jack is proving himself in the big country this week. I’ve had him in a couple different places with seriously nasty terrain, with deep coulees, sharp shale rocks, and random gumbo sinkholes. Jack picks his route with confidence, and packs me up and down some crazy stuff. I’m very impressed with where his head is at!

He saddled up this morning, hopped on the trailer, and we headed out to gather cows. For the FIRST TIME EVER. He acted like he’s been doing it the last ten years. Jack was confident about the cattle, travelled out by himself without trying to call or draw to the other horses, and covered all sorts of variable terrain with skill and efficiency.

Jack is a client horse belonging to Debbie Gorrell. As of today, Jack is on Day 52 with 31 total rides. He’s a very exceptional guy!

Smooch and Dill have been maturing nicely out in John Moore’s big country. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to run these two two-year-old geldings out in the hills this summer. There’s no better place for a young horse to learn how to handle himself, than the badlands country he will likely be tasked to work later in life.

Smooch is a home-raised critter by the stallion Frenchmans Elvis, and out of my good saddle mare, Pibby. His sire Frenchmans Elvis is owned by Philip and Andrea Huft and based near Baker, Montana. This c**t was very easy to put a light start on, and has such a great personality. I’m looking forward to putting more time on him as a three!

Dill is from the Walker Ranch near Musselshell, Montana. He is by Awesome Tomcat and out of a mare with lines including High Rolling Roany, Gallo Del Cielo, and Boon Bar. Dill is a half-brother to my good mare JoJo. He has a light start under saddle and I look forward to watching him mature! This guy has a serious will to work cattle, and should be a really fun one to develop.

I am really enjoying this guy. While Jack still occasionally reminds me that he’s a c**t, he has been proving himself to be solid and dependable in a variety of situations. He covers country exceptionally well, and feels great under saddle. He is definitely my kind of guy!

Got the opportunity to go for a little ride in John Moore’s country with Marty Penrod on Friday! Marty was aboard his big 2-year-old c**t, Zee Zee (pictured), and I rode my 3-year-old client horse, Jack.

Marty’s Zee Zee c**t put in a really nice trip for his 9th ever ride! This c**t is a real specimen. He is by Gary Crowder’s stallion, Zee Partytime, and out of a super nice mare of John Moore’s, Sweet Selah Bars. Zee Zee has a tremendous mind for a two-year-old, and I’m very excited to see him and Marty grow as a team!

This was Day 31 - Ride 15 for this guy, and what a perfect first outside ride on Jack! The little buckskin guy has been so easy to get along with, and he just travelled right out and crossed everything I asked him to. He was sensible and quiet about crossing the creek and bottoms we came across, and didn’t even offer to jump the water. Jack was forward going and travelled super nicely. He wasn’t spooky or weird about the dogs with us, and handled all the scary rocks and water tanks like a gentleman. I’m very pleased with him!

This big guy has been a lot of fun!

Pete has been my go-to gelding all summer, and has proven time and again on his solid reliability. He’s always the horse for the big job, and I’m very proud of how he’s handled throughout the year. I’m looking forward to lightly starting his two half-sisters this winter, Cake and Soda!

Pete rides great alone and in a group, but when the other horses leave to go look at cattle, but are still in earshot, he wants to call to them and pay attention to what they’re doing. We have been working on his ability to pay attention to me and not whinny or draw towards the other horses. Base instinct isn’t going to be removed from the horse, but appropriate behavior can be rewarded and inappropriate behavior discouraged. He’s figuring out how he needs to be!

All in all, this dude has been a ton of fun.

Went out to Okerman’s on Saturday with Marty Penrod and helped sort some yearlings out of the pairs, then move pastures, and sort some more yearlings! It was a fun little trip with good company and perfect weather after a really hot spell.

Pibby was a blast, handling well in a frog-mouth bridle bit that I picked up last year at a great little trade show in Big Timber.
