Howl Out Loud! 🐺
A hungry husky busted out of his cage at an Arizona shelter and made a mess of the office while searching for a snack.https://abc7.com/husky-escapes-cage-ken...
Love wins.
This is the type of relationship we aspire to when rehoming and caring for our Thunder Pups. So sweet. 🐺😘
Extra Attitude? How about everyday? Husky guardians are amused, not surprised!
"Intelligence is different from train-ability."
Fascinating stuff.
My life with Huskies... they sure have taught me how to be a better mentor, guardian, and canine psychologist.

Traditional arctic sled dogs are generally smarter than other breeds. But that has it's drawbacks. In dogs, as in humans, there is a big difference in intelligence and trainability. If you’d like to understand this better, keep reading. This week I had two conversations with two very different dog...
The struggle is weird... 🐺😆🐺
I believe that, most importantly, rescuers need to learn to love themselves.
________
“To love a rescuer you must love all of her. You must love the scars covering her body from panicked and hurt animals she was trying to help. You must love her fractured heart, that has been broken so many times she no longer even takes the time to mend the pieces.
To love a rescuer, you must embrace her grit and determination, and know that although she fights a war she can never win, she can and does win a few battles. You must love the tears she will shed over those she lost. You must give her comfort that she refuses to accept, as she blames herself for things she could have never foreseen.
To love a rescuer you must acknowledge the rage she feels towards the world at times, and know that anger is driven by a love of life too few have. You must give her space and room to cry and mourn for the losses that others have caused out of carelessness or cruelty.
To love a rescuer you must understand her passion to heal and save is a calling, not a choice. You must accept that to save animals is part of her soul and without that she could never be happy.
To love a rescuer you must be patient. You must accept her work comes first. She will forgo sleep, forgo food, forgo her life for animals in need. She will work tirelessly until her body and mind fail her completely and she cannot go on.
To love a rescuer, you must be strong. You must not be threatened by her focus and love of animals. You must accept that the things you love about her, the strength and convictions and loyalty are also what drives her sense of duty to animals in need; you cannot have one without the other.
To love a rescuer you must never ask her to choose, because she will, and it will not be you. “

And this. Our very own DAX was "ruined" by a veterinarian who got aggressive with him and pinned him on the floor, in a corner. (I know because it's in his file). He still trusts pretty much no one, but me. He's not outwardly aggressive, but very pressure sensitive. I took him to the groomer's awhile ago and they called before I left the parking lot for me to come get him. He wasn't having it. His overall trust for humans was taken away. And had he not landed here, he very well may have lost his life because of it.
Animals are our equals. No one has any business in animal welfare if you aren't putting their best interests first. Yes, set boundaries and don't spoil your dog into obnoxiousness, but never do we need to be punitive when the sweet soul is scared or uncertain. Be a leader. Be a lover. Be humane.

Pretty much 'same' for the HuskaPoos. 🥰🐺
Did you know that on a quiet night the howl of a wolf can be heard by other wolves up to ten miles away? Howling is not only important for long distance communication between pack members but it can also be used as a form of marking a wolf’s territory. Wolves will also howl for a number of different reasons. Here at the Center our wolves howl to greet the morning and end the evening, they howl to greet staff when they arrive, and even “gossip” when something is happening like a coyote walking by the perimeter at night.
A whole lot of grooming going on... These are some of the inevitable Thunder Puppies. They are great dogs. And they all deserve a spa day. I love their confidence when they feel pretty.
They are lovely with each other. 🥰🐺

Happy Mother's
(and Father's- cuz why wait?)
Day to the entire Thunder Puppy Pack!
A super-sincere and heartfelt thank you to all of you dog guardians, and supporters alike, who have adopted and/or assisted us with all ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE of our Legacy dogs. Thank you for opening your hearts and homes. For almost all of our Thunder Pups, it was a life-or-death difference. You are loved.
We've had a great run with our direct "paws-on" approach and are really looking forward to continuing to help make an impact in the lives of Huskies (and other animals) in the years to come- however that presents itself.
Enjoy your weekend, Folks. You deserve it.
Sometimes
A poem for dog moms
Sometimes life has other plans
And your child is born with four
Four legs to keep you busy
With more hair than you asked for
Sometimes they’re your only child
Or one of two or three
With ears and nails
Eyebrows and tails
All part of one family
Sometimes they get scared at night
And crawl into your bed
Then tuck their cold, wet nose
so tight, up against your head
And just like children,
it’s a struggle
to help them learn and grow
To sit and stay
and run and play
and when to stop and go.
Sometimes you whisper softly
And gaze into their eyes
While other times their angsty screams
Make you want to cry
And sometimes one you didn’t raise
Becomes your very own
You learn to save each other
And become each other’s home
But unlike children,
when it comes
the time to say goodbye
The furry ones
don’t leave your home,
they go up to the sky.
So sometimes there’s a mother
Without the one she loves
Who feels more like she has a child
Looking from above
And sometimes,
just sometimes (if you’re lucky)
Your story starts again
Late night cries
Echo the skies
A song of now and then
Sometimes life has other plans
When labels fade away
Two or four, less hair or more
Happy Mother’s Day

"Now you will see morning manic music. Believe me, yeah. It's a new dawn!" ~ Grace Slick The Foster Fabulous Five got over a Foot of Frosty snow last night!
“Today I adopted a human. It broke my heart to see him so lonely and confused. And suddenly I got his teary eyes to meet mine. I don't like the smell of sad. I wanted to jump on him so bad. He spoke to me with cuteness and I knew it, I had to rescue him!, that human needed me. So I bark with all my strength, I followed him blocks and blocks. I got close, I could smell his hands. The human smiled for an instant and when he took me in his arms, I started to feel his ice cream heart warmed. I approached his cheeks and felt a tear roll on them. I looked at him deeply and his response was a brilliant smile. I jumped excited into his arms, I promised to behave, love him forever and never part with his side. How lucky he was to go through that block, down that street and I feel lucky too. There were so many people walking around and no one was looking at me. All worried, all in their troubles. Glad no one else chose me Today I saved a life. Today I adopted a human” 🐾 🐕 -author unknown
Happy Birthday to the lovely lady on our right! Ben and Stacy have stood by Thunder Puppy K9 Rehabilitation and Rehoming since before it's inception! Look at them now. 🤩 Those are Thunder Puppy alumni OSCAR and SAKARI with their sister, MISTY. These HuskaPoos struck GOLD!
Alumna SITKA SUE came from one canyon over to say "Whoooooo." She brought her "little" brother YETI who did a rain dance for us. It worked. 😍⛈☔
Well Pack, some not-so-great news this weekend. Our buddy DAX was returned. I have my theories of what went sideways - but it doesn't really matter at the end of the day because here he is. :) Most concerning was a problem that developed with their existing pupa-rooo-ni. We loved her too, so of course, we want to keep everybody physically safe and mentally healthy. DAX included. Obviously, his friends here are glad to see him and I must say that EVEREST is ears over tail in love.😍🐺 The two of them really are a perfect pair. Back to the drawing board. We can take solace in the fact that DAX is only the 4th dog out of a 152 that has been returned to us post- adoption. 2.63%. That's not so bad. Welcome back, DAX. We're committed to you. It's going to be okay.
Thanking you yet again for all your precious support- (particularly unexpected for Betty White's ❤ birthday!), here are Kabin Kids LYRA, PICKLES, ZEKE, KIMBER, and DAX giving you a peek into their snowy, cold week. Lots of tail waggin" fun and multiple moments of Zen. We hope you enjoy. 🐺
Y'all remember KATIE, right? She has been here awhile now, but we're getting ready to say, "So long, Sweet Girl!," this coming week. KATIE came in as an owner surrender after her one and only human passed away. The family took steps to get her here from Tennessee and it was thought KATIE and her "aunt" could make it work with Auntie's existing dog, JADE. Well, everything happening all at once, proved to be a bit overwhelming and KATIE was surrendered to Thunder Puppy. However, Auntie could not stop thinking about her and vowed to take all the advice given, study hard, and get a trainer in her area (they are 97 miles away from us) to make it work. We'll do training too, when we get there. Meanwhile, KATIE'S time here has not been in vain. She has gained so much confidence and has learned the joy of just being a dog. I feel like she's overcome most of her trauma and is now comfortable in her own fur. As dirty as it may have become. Howl Out Loud! Mountain living isn't for the meticulous at heart! Snow, rain, mud and dirt help us all reconnect with Nature. 😅🌧❄🌠 Anyway, we are glad to have had the honor of helping KATIE and her soon-to-be "new" Pack Leader. Keep up the good work, Ladies!
When KATIE got here she was pretty shut down due to the trauma she had endured. (her human died and the following sequence of events). Fortunately, her "angel person" and benefactor got her into our program fairly quickly. As was said before, KATIE'S rehab is different than those wild wolves that hang out in the K9 cabin. 🐺🤣 She has needed help with "finding herself", going outside on her own, hanging with benign dogs, eating timely and properly, and revealing her goofy side again. She's not ready to move on yet, but I am so super proud of, and happy for her, so far. Send Katie your X's and O's. Everything little thing is going to be alright.
ZEKE isn't often featured here just because he's a chill guy doing his Livestock Guardian job, but he definitely has a side-hustle; coaching and playing with his Foster siblings and the occasional trainee. ZEKE is a great fella looking for a forever situation. Have livestock and property? Don't have house parties every weekend? Not planning on climbing a 14er anytime soon? ZEKE could be your guy! Feel free to inquire!
Royal Snow Dance. King PICKLES and Queen LYRA teaching kiddo DAX. Don't worry. No Huskies were harmed in the making of this preview. 🤣🐺
Good morning, Pack! Have some of you have been around long enough to remember MAYA the GSD? She is one of the dozen or so non-Huskies to have gone through the re-homing process thru Thunder Puppy. Hard to believe that was a decade ago! She has been well-loved and cared for. I suspect she still believes in her mind that she is the powerhouse she was in her youth. She came by to say 'woof' and of course, meet PICKLES. His milkshake brings all the girls to the yard.
