DOG TALES: Dog Shelter
Deputy Needed
I have been silent for several months as Partners For Paws has not had any new news or fundraisers in the works. Paws has been extremely fortunate that our wonderful Pickaway community has continued to donate and support Paws' mission to assist the Dog Shelter with medical expenses for our homeless dogs.
Last evening Paws held their monthly meeting at the Library where our new Chief Warden, Preston, gave his “state of the shelter” report as he does each month. Paws appreciates the work Chief Preston, his deputies Wyatt and Joey, and a wonderful young lady, Lily, who is a master cleaner at the shelter.
I decided to speak to our community about an issue at the dog shelter. The shelter is in need of a new deputy. Once Preston was promoted, the call went out for a new deputy. I asked last night where the commissioners list vacancies for the county. I was told on the Pickaway County website and at the county Jobs department.
Is the word getting to the community? I know they do not advertise in the Herald any longer. I know the pay is not wonderful. I know the job is not an easy job.
I don’t know why county jobs are not listed in the Herald. So I’m asking all the parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends who read the Herald to get the word out to relatives or friends who they know are looking for a job.
The pay is about the same as working in fast food. However, a job at the dog shelter, working with the dogs as they are picked up, some you have gone out and picked up, as strays, be they ready to adopt out or are injured or sick, seems a lot more interesting then cooking food, at least for me.
At times the job is really difficult and can be sad. But a Dog Shelter Deputy’s job can be a very rewarding job at the end of the day. Your interaction with the community can be enlightening and educational.
Showing shelter dogs at a school function and watching the children light up around the dogs, can put a smile on your face for several days.
For me the biggest drawback would be wanting to take them all home!
If our Herald readers know someone, old or young, male or female, who would enjoy working with dogs and would like a rewarding job, please pass the word along.
JoEllen Jacobs is president of Partners For Paws, which holds fundraising events so the funds raised can help pay for medical costs for the shelter dogs. Paws goal is help the dogs, available for adoption, be the best they can be with regard to their health and welfare.
