Our Story

📷 I’m Gary Watchorn, the inventor of the KittySalon Groomer!

The idea of the KittySalon Groomer came to me back in 2006 when I was vacationing in Myrtle Beach, SC with my family. My wife and I have owned cats since we first got married. Our first cat was a Persian Kitty named Obi-wan Kenobi after the famous Star Wars character. However, we soon realized how much hair Obi-wan Kenobi shed as we were constantly vacuuming and sweeping up his cat hair in our home. We loved our Kitty, however we just couldn’t take the cat hair anymore. Especially when his cat hair got all over our woolen pants and sweaters. Due to this problem, I began thinking of ways to groom our Kitty on a daily bases without having to take the time to brush him everyday. I knew there were plenty of products on the market for sweeping up and vacuuming up cat hair, but I wasn’t aware of any product that would automatically groom our Kitty’s fur without having to brush him every day. (We now own four cats, three Ragdolls and one Maine C**n, so controlling the hair in our home became more challenging for us.) I figured if I could get our Kitties to pass through an opening that had a brush type of apparatus attached to the opening, this would remove the cat hair on their fur every time they went through this opening. However, I needed a reason for our Kitties to go through this opening, bingo it came to me! I felt if I created an enclosure where their food was inside, our Kitties would need to go through this opening in order to get to their food and water. So when I returned from our family’s vacation I built a prototype that had an opening in the front of the enclosure for our Kitties to enter the enclosure to eat. After several weeks of sourcing materials and cutting and gluing the parts together in my garage, my first prototype was born. I then made a grooming brush by taking several thin pieces of stiff material and glued a velcro hook material over both sides of the material and attached it around the opening in (8) equally spaced pie-shaped segments. (I felt I needed the material to be stiff in order for it to pull off the hair as our Kitty went through my new brush.) Next I put our Kitty’s food inside the enclosure and waited with much anticipation for our Kitties to go through my new brush as they stepped into the enclosure to eat. (When I looked at the brush I admit it wasn’t pretty, but I felt if it works I’ll make some improvements to my design.) After several hours of watching our Kitties trying to go through my newly created brush, I soon discovered that our Kitties would not have anything to do with my new brush design because they didn’t like the rough surface of the velcro hooks on their face, so I decided to abandoned this brush idea. Then after several months of trying various different materials, including lint roller tape, I still couldn’t find a solution as our Kitties didn’t find any of these products to be very appealing to them, so I decided to abandon my idea for a while and felt that my Kitty groomer may never make it’s way into the archives of new successful inventions.

Then after several months, I finally picked up my idea again and was really committed this time in finding a solution for grooming our Kitties fur that would both be acceptable to them and would also remove the loose cat hair from their fur they shed everyday. After weeks of testing additional types of grooming materials, I finally came up with the solution when I tested a soft stiffened woolen material. (This soft woolen material collected the cat hair in the same way our woolen pants, sweaters, and rugs attract cat hair and was be very soft on our Kitty’s face.) I then produced a square disc shaped prototype from this material with the (8) pie-shaped strips like I had with the first groomer brush I made. I installed this new groomer disc in the opening of the enclosure with Velcro hook and loop tabs. Next, I put our Kitty’s food in the enclosure and waited again to see if my Kitties would go through my new brush to get to their food to eat. After about 15 minutes of smelling and walking around the opening, our first Kitty went through my new groomer disc and entered the enclosure. The other three Kitties soon followed one by one when each Kitty came out of the enclosure. Now I felt I was making progress! I then contracted a company to manufacture a professional prototype that had both a food and water dispenser and a cartridge to insert the groomer discs. Now for over three years I’ve been grooming our Kitties using our new KittySalon Groomer on both our short and long haired cats using the new prototype I built with great success. (Please see the photos I’ve posted on our page which will show you how much cat hair the groomer discs remove which work great in keeping the cat hair out of our home.) The cat hair shown in the photos is on both sides of the groomer discs as our Kitties are groomed twice going in and twice coming out of the KittySalon Groomer.) When your Kitty’s fur is groomed consistently on a daily basis by the KittySalon Groomer it will keep your Kitty’s fur really clean, so the cat hair they shed doesn’t end up in your home. In 2017 we made several new improvements to our design, which you can see above and on our website: www.kittysalongroomer.com.

In 2012 I applied for a patent and received my patent in October 2017 for our new cat grooming system. I’m also expanding our patent to cover pass through doors and any enclosure where Kitties pass through, which will be the next products our company Watchorn Products, LLC will be introducing to the market. We will also be introducing our new KittyPotty Groomer which will also use our new groomer disc technology. Our new KittyPotty Groomer will have a feature to remove the Kitty’s waste in a fully enclosed area, so you don’t have to remove this waste yourself, and since it will be fully enclosed it will keep the unwanted smells away as well. Stay tuned, we will be introducing this new product soon.
