10 month old hound puppy, Eugene, has been working hard in obedience class at Who's Leading Who, LLC. He has been working hard on loose leash walking, sit, down, and stay.
Eugene would love a home where he can showcase his manners and work on them daily. He still has lots of puppy energy and antics to share with you, too! He does good with dogs and dog-friendly cats. Eugene loves people and giving kids kisses. If adopted soon, you can jump right into training class and start off on the right foot!

So many kittens!!

We have 55 kittens in our system right now, and it's time to start looking for homes!!
Because we have so many, we are trying something new.
Kittens can be adopted but will need to come back to Grinnell for final vet appointments to be spayed/neutered and last vaccines given. The adoption fee plus a refundable early adoption fee will need to paid to take the kitten home. The refundable fee will be returned once the animal has been spayed/neutered. The refundable fee is to prevent no call/no show vet appointments.
Not all kittens are available or at the shelter. Once fully vetted, kittens will be vaccinated, dewormed, spay/neutered, and microchipped.

We are open Wednesday-Friday 1-6pm and Saturday 10-2pm.

Chowder is an almost 2 year old bulldog mix. He LOVES people and has done great with adults and kids. He does good with cats until they run away from him, then it's a game. He has done good with dogs but will need to meet them before adoption. Chowder is a fast learner, he wants to be a people pleaser.

Bruno is just over a year old and still has some puppy growing to do. He loves people and has previously lived with kids. He is dog selective and will need to meet them before adopting.

Black Dog Syndrome

Black dogs tend to stay in shelters 4x longer than lighter colored dogs. Johnny and Fenrir are 2 of our longest residents and have a reduced adoption fee.

Johnny is 2 years old and has spent a majority of that time in a shelter. He is looking for a calm home with someone who can help him gain confidence. Those that he lets into his circle get to see the playful, loveable side of Johnny. He has done good with cats and some dogs. He will need to meet any dogs in the home. Young kids scare him, but he has been warming up to our middle school-aged volunteers.

Fenrir is a lovable lug. He is a big boy who likes quick runs in the yard and then snuggles on the couch. He will need to be the only furkid in your life. He loves people.

Maggie and Motley are two of our newest dogs. They love adults and kids.

Motley is a German Wirehaired Pointer. He will need regular exercise and would make a great walking or running partner. He does great on leash. Motley does good with other dogs.

Maggie is a compact lab mix. She is one of our calmer dogs and is very laidback.

Black cats tend to spend longer in shelters than other cats.

Some superstitions say they bring bad luck, but we prefer the ones where they bring good luck and love.

Black cats in Japan will bring you love.
In Asia, France, and the U.K., black cats will bring good fortune and wealth.

Our longest Black cat residents are Headmastress and her babies, Claween and Draculara. They have been with us for 250 days! Headmastress is our semi-friendly outdoor cat. She has slowly warmed up to us and will let us pet her. She hates being inside and will fight to get out. Draculara and Claween are sweet, playful kittens. They have grown up around other cats and have met lots of kids and a few dogs.

Genavieve is the newest addition. She is timid with new places and has been slowly warming up to us. She would love a quieter home.

Cardamom is a mischievous little man. He loves playing with the other cats and will occasionally pick on them until they play. He will greet you at the door and demand attention.

All cats over 6 months have a reduced adoption fee for the month of June.

Feline Leukemia kittens

We now have 7 kittens diagnosed with Feline Leukemia. They most likely got it from their moms in utero. Their moms were outside cats who likely got it from fighting other cats with the virus.

Feline leukemia is a virus that attacks the cats' immune system and other organs. It can lead to a shortened life.

Cats with this virus need to be kept inside and away from other cats who do not have the virus. Dogs, other animals, and humans can not get the virus.

The best way to keep them healthy is to limit stress, and that is hard to do in a shelter.

They are all super friendly and love snuggling. The 4 older tabbies will all curl up together to nap.

We would love for them to be adopted or long-term fostered in pairs.

When your friend crashes your photo shoot.

Jojo is a sour patch kid, little sour little sweet. He is one of our older cats at almost 8 years old. Cardamom is a 1 year old kitten who thinks everybody loves him.

We have had ZERO adoptions this month. Our dog room is full. Our cat room is supposed to be getting remodeled this month, but we need cats adopted or fostered!!

Longest Term Dogs!

Reduced adoption fees! Only $50!

Fenrir is a 4 year old 100lb mutt. He loves people and older kids, he may knock down young kids. He needs to be the only animal in the home (no cats or dogs) and would do best with a secure fence. Fenrir loves giving hugs and is so gentle about it.

Comet is 3 year old boxer mix. He does great with cats. Comet can be dog friendly, but due to being here for almost a year, they stress him out. He loves snuggles and curling up with us on the floor. Comet loves going for walks and 1-on-1 time out of the shelter. He would greatly benefit from a foster or weekend getaway. We think he would good kids as long as he has a kid free zone he can hang out in when needed.

Johnny is a staff favorite. We know he will take someone very special and patient to adopt him. But until that time comes, we will love him and spoil him. Johnny needs a calm, quiet home and a safe space to hide out in. He has not shown any aggression to people. Johnny is a homebody. He prefers not leaving his area (minimal walks) and would love a fenced-in yard.

Lloyd is a 3 year old border collie mix. He loves people and kids. He has previously lived with kids and did great. Lloyd gets along with most dogs his size. He does tend to herd small dogs and cats, so a home without them would be best.

Chowder is a 1 year old American Bulldog mix. He is friendly to everyone he meets. He can be picky with dogs and will chase cats that run. He spent a few days away from the shelter and had no accidents inside and did great with an invisible fence.

Even if you aren't looking to adopt, all our animals would love extra attention, snuggle a cat, or take a dog on a walk.

If you can only make a short-term commitment to an animal, several dogs and cats would benefit from a shelter break.

These girls have raised 13 kittens and are ready for their new homes!

Pepper loves attention! She will meow until you pay attention to her. She was slow to warm up to other cats but has done good with them.

Princess Peach had 4 kittens and was found after hiding them behind a hottub. She is super sweet and does great with kids and cats.

Florence had 4 kittens of her own and helped raise 1 other and was a temporary mom to 5 newborn babies while we searched for a mom with younger babies. She loves snuggling at night in bed and having her belly rubbed. She took time to warm up to other cats. She HATES dogs and will go out of her way to attack them.

These moms are ready to find homes while their babies are still growing up in foster homes.
There adoption fee is only $50 for the month of June!

Outdoor Cats

Headmastress, Queen B and Greta, would do best as outdoor cats.
Headmastress currently lives outside at PALS after escaping from a kennel. She has slowly started trusting us and will let us pet her. She is a great hunter, but with several cat hating dogs, she is not safe here.

Queen B likes to do what she wants. She was a former barn cat before finding her way to PALS. She is almost 12 years old. She is slowly getting used to being inside but still likes to go outside. She likes her personal space away from people and other animals.

Greta was adopted out as a barn cat and then found her way back to us. She has been doing good living inside with other cats, but she hasn't warmed up to people. She was injured, most likely from climbing into a warm engine last winter.
Our outside cats will need shelter and food provided for them. Their adoption fee is only $10.

We are open Wednesday-Friday 1-6pm and Saturday 10-2pm.

Seniors and Youngsters

Waylon and Frozone are the current Elders of PALS.
Waylon is an 8 year old Jack Russel mix. He is sweet to people but can be grumpy towards other dogs. Frozone is our 10 year old beautiful green eyed boy. He loves sun bathing and gets along with other cats and dogs.

Eugene and Bridget are the available "babies"
Eugene is still a puppy at 10 months old. He has done great with other dogs but needs some reminders with cats. He just started beginner obedience class to work on leash training.

Bridget is the youngest available at only 7 months. She was brought in almost 3 months ago and has grown up around other shelter cats. She is very lovable and greets everyone at the kennel door.

We will be remodeling the cat room and getting new communal havens installed in July and need as many cats adopted as possible!

Fostering is a great alternative. It gives the animal a break from the shelter, and we learn more about how they do in a home setting. Any of our dogs are available for fostering, and we offer a 1 week trial on all dogs before adoption isr finalized.
We would love our Feline Leukemia kittens to find homes, they would be perfect for fostering and determining if a cat fits your life. They do need to go to homes without other cats. They can live with dogs.

Longest Term Animals

These guys have all been with us for 230+ days. Johnny, our longest term dog, has been with us for 1 year, 8 months, and 20 days. Greta, our longest cat, has been here for 276 days.

Queen B and Greta would prefer to be outdoor cats, either on a farm or in a shop/garage.

Draculara and Claween are almost 10 months old and have spent 6 months in a shelter. They get along great with other cats and seem to be okay with dogs. They do not need to be adopted together.

14 PALS animals found homes in May, including our longest cat residents, bonded sisters Edie and Darby! Snow, Wanda, and Sparky are also enjoying their new homes.

If you are looking for a new furry member, come visit us Wednesday-Friday 1-6pm and Saturday 10-2pm. Even if it's just to snuggle a cat or walk a dog, the animals appreciate it.

Black Cats

Black cats (and dogs) are frequently overlooked in shelters. They tend to be the last kittens adopted in a litter and looked over for more unique markings. They are harder to photograph and harder to show their personalities.

Bodie is a sharply dressed black cat. He is a recent addition and likes observing what the other cats are doing.

Cardamom came in with his sister and pregnant mom, Pepper. He is a very playful 1 year old cat and loves wrestling with Kallie.

Genevieve was brought to us shortly after having kittens. She is guessed to be only 1 year old and still a kitten herself. Unfortunately, none of her kittens survived. She is a shy cat who would love a calm home to settle down in. She is friendly but very scared.

Claween and Draculara are the last ones left from their litter. They are both energetic, playful 9 month old kittens. They have been in the shelter since they were just a few weeks old.

All Cats over 6 months old are available for $50 (almost half off) for a limited time!
