Huey, an 8-year-old Poodle mix, initially visited MedVet Mandeville's ER after being paralyzed in the rear legs. A CT scan revealed a tumor pressing on his spine, resulting in his inability to use his back legs. The tumor was diagnosed as multiple myeloma. After a dose of chemotherapy, Huey started to regain movement in his legs later that day and continued on oral chemotherapy, allowing him to walk normally again in just a few weeks.

Huey has maintained his chemotherapy treatment plan, visiting MedVet for monitoring, bloodwork, and treatments every 1-2 months. He's feeling great and continues to walk without any problems. Through his healing journey at MedVet, Huey has captured the hearts of our caregivers and is especially loved by the Oncology department 💙 His parents note that he's always excited to come see his friends at MedVet (and did we mention he loves to dress up for his visits?! 😍)

We are so proud of you, Huey!

Bella, a beloved Doberman, visited MedVet Mandeville where she was examined by Dr. Jill Yates in Internal Medicine for symptoms of abdominal pain and potential bloat. An ultrasound initially revealed a small mass on her spleen, though that did not explain Bella’s presenting symptoms. Further analysis, however, uncovered a foreign object penetrating the intestinal wall of the duodenum—the first section of the small intestine immediately beyond the stomach. This alarming discovery, along with free fluid in the abdomen indicating possible sepsis, led to an urgent surgical intervention by Dr. Cody Doyle.

During surgery, the foreign object, identified as a BBQ skewer, was removed, and Bella's spleen was also taken out to test for any diseases that may be present. Despite developing sepsis shortly after the procedure, Bella was discharged just two days later.

At her two-week follow-up, Bella is thriving, and her family is thrilled that the small mass on her spleen was confirmed to be a benign hematoma, requiring no further treatment. Bella's story is a testament to the swift and expert care provided at MedVet Mandeville. 🐶

Having previously been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, MJ and Snicker visited MedVet Mandeville to receive I-131 radiation therapy — a permanent treatment of feline hyperthyroidism. Dr Jill Yates from our Internal Medicine team led their treatment, while Makala and Alayna, our certified radiation technicians, showered them with compassionate care during their brief hospitalization.

Special thanks to Dr. Zac Reyna from Lafayette Veterinary Care Center (MJ's owner), and Kleinpeter Veterinary Hospital (referring veterinarian) for entrusting us with MJ and Snicker's care 💙

Meet Beignet, an 8-year-old Chihuahua, who visited MedVet Mandeville for sudden vomiting, lethargy, and collapsing. An ultrasound revealed a “halo sign” on the gallbladder (noticeable thickening of the gallbladder wall) and bloodwork uncovered elevated clotting times and liver enzymes. Dr. Julia Fincher determined that all signs, including low blood pressure, pointed to anaphylaxis — a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction.

Beignet was hospitalized briefly to administer fluids, epinephrine, Benadryl, and steroids. We're thrilled to share she's made a full recovery and is back to her normal cuddly self 💙

It's the season for anaphylaxis, snake bites, and heatstrokes (notably in the southern region of the U.S.), so we encourage pet owners to stay vigilant by monitoring for any signs that your pet may need medical attention — signs may include: itching, hives, swelling, excessive salivation or drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and/or difficulty breathing.

Today, on Melanoma Monday, we join the efforts to raise awareness about the signs of this dangerous cancer in pets.

Malignant melanomas often manifest in areas like the lips, mouth, eyes, or nail beds, but with early detection and treatment, there is a high chance of successful outcomes.

If you notice any signs of melanoma in your pet, reach out to your veterinarian for guidance and consider requesting a referral to a Veterinary Oncologist.

MedVet Oncology treats several types of cancers, including melanoma. For a list of MedVet Oncology locations, visit:

Many of us will be heading outdoors during the warm months ahead, which means a higher chance of tick exposure for us, and our pets. Ticks can carry diseases, like Lyme disease, that pose serious health risks. Be wary of overgrown bushes, dense vegetation, and excessive yard debris, as these are prime hideouts for ticks.

Lily toxicity is more common in warmer months, particularly for cats. Some types of lilies will cause local irritation to the mouth while others can cause kidney failure.

If your cat has eaten a lily, take them and the plant to your veterinarian, or a pet ER like MedVet, to help determine the best course of action and start immediate treatment if needed.
