Update: Molly was found deceased. Thank you for for everyone searching

Lost Dog:

Please be on the lookout for Molly, a 2yr old Jack Russel/Dachshund. She just had puppies and they are safe but Molly got scared about 5:30am this morning and has ran off. She is very frightened so please do not chase, that will make her run more. She seems very treat/food motivated and if you can get her to come to you, follow into a fenced yard or cornered safely, that will help. Please contact Betty at 502-803-0858 or Facebook if you have any sightings of her.

Molly was last seen on Secretariat Way in Silver Lake II.

When you ask people where they got their dog, the usual answer is "a breeder." Since any breeder can be a puppy mill, it is up to the buyer to see for themselves, pick the puppy up in person, meet the mother dog to see her mental and physical conditions as well as where she and all of the "breeders" dogs live. If they won't let you, assume it's a puppy mill. Responsible breeders are proud of how they treat their dogs.

Warning: small rant in defense of small birds that need big help from humans 💚🫵🏼
Most of you know me as a wellness veterinarian 👩‍⚕️, but I am also a wildlife biologist 👩🏻‍🌾 and licensed wildlife rehabilitator 🦅. This is one of my patients, who is sick because humans fed him cloudy, polluted nectar teeming with bacteria that eventually killed him 🧫😰.

I feel the same way about wildlife as I do domestic pets: it’s our responsibility to know enough to do no harm. When it comes to feeding wildlife, either do it right, or don’t do it at all. If you decide to feed hummingbirds, please do it correctly and responsibly, or you will kill them (and life is hard enough for our wild friends).

1. Do NOT use artificially colored store- bought hummingbird food 🛑❌. Commercial nectars have way too many preservatives, additives, chemical stabilizers and Red Dye #5 that’s harmful to their bodies 👎🏼.

Make your own nectar instead:

1 cup plain sugar + 4 cups boiling water (filter out the impurities)

(1:4 ratio means you can make smaller batches, like 1/4 cup sugar + 1 cup boiling water, if desired). Stir until sugar dissolves and let cool. Store in refrigerator and use up within a week.

❌ I love raw honey, but DON’T USE HONEY with hummingbirds 🍯👎🏼 (sugar is 50% fructose/50% glucose, honey is 40% fructose/30% glucose + other constituents, so it’s the wrong food matrix for them)

❌ I eat organic cane sugar, but DON’T USE ORGANIC SUGAR with hummingbirds👎🏼, it contains more minerals (like iron) that can bioaccumulate over time

2. Warm sugar water can quickly incubate incredible levels of pathogenic bacteria 🦠 and fungi that can infect and kill birds quickly 📈⚰️.The warmer the weather, the faster pathogenic microbes accumulate in nectar ☠️

Thoroughly disinfect and refill your hummingbird feeder twice a week in the spring. Above 85 degrees, clean and refill daily. (Yes, I said daily 😅) 🫗🧴🚰🧽🪣

Is this a complete pain? Yes. It’s also lifesaving and crucial, if you choose to feed hummingbirds. I spend 15 minutes a day taking care of my hummingbird feeders because I want the birds in my yard to not leave diseased and ill 🕊️.

I want to be a responsible steward of the wildlife in my yard. Please do the same, or simply enjoy them without feeding them. Plant hummingbird-friendly flowers 🌸. Better to keep them safe than inadvertently give them fatal food poisoning 💔.

Junius, NY: Puppies on their way to a pet store near you...yep folks...this is a picture of puppies being 'transported' from a puppy mill in JUNIUS, NY. Pretty sight, isn't it? Pile them up like hay, corn, pumpkins, whatever.

***This picture was taken on Whiskey Hill Road... turning onto Whiskey Hill Rd. from Donnelly Road, Junius, NY**

***For those that are not comprehending the meaning of this picture: No, these are not literally 'puppies'. They are younger dogs that are being transported- assumedly to another mill. They are/will be BREEDER DOGS. Does that make it any more of a 'prettier' picture? It is a figurative of the 'future puppies' produced by these dogs and 100s more that will be sold to pets stores. However, make no mistake, this picture was taken in Junius, NY.

The Amish (and other millers) raise and treat them like any other farm product- nothing but a money-making commodity. They can do this because they know that once these puppies are in the store display area, people will 'ooohhh and aaaahhh' and 'oh so cute' and buy them right up. Put them out of business!!! Don't buy from a pet store... demand change of the laws in your area! Junius residents, take this picture to heart. You are allowing this to happen right down the road!

***Awareness Post***

We've had two requests to search for dogs recently. Sadly they've drowned and at this time of year they have resurfaced before we could get there, leaving their owners with a traumatic task of recovering them.

There are a number of breeds that CANT SWIM or are POOR SWIMMERS. They can sink very quickly and with best efforts to save them it is often not possible.

You rarely get a second chance with water.

Your dog may never have shown an interest in water, or may just paddle. But dogs are instinct reactive and it only takes one accident.

Please don't take the risk. Please keep breeds that are known to be poor swimmers on a lead near water. At least then you have a chance of saving them.

Some of the breeds most known that can't swim/poor swimmers and most at risk are...

• French Bulldogs
• English Bulldogs
• Pocket Bully's
• Pugs
• Dachshunds
• Boxers
• Shih Tzu's
• Basset Hounds
• Corgi's
• Maltese

LONG POST
A bit of a rant, a bit of education, and a sad story.

What has been deemed the “doodle craze” in the animal welfare world has become so overwhelming.
You can search most any shelter or all-breed rescue and a large percentage will have at least one doodle type dog in their care. These dogs are generally marketed by breeders as “the best of both worlds,” highlighting the best traits of two breeds in one dog when the reality is that yes, a small percentage will end up with most of the desired traits but the larger percentage will end of with some combination of a few good things and many not so good. The most honest marketing for a doodle dog of any combined breeds should include “likely to be an active, stubborn dog that actually does shed and may have markers for hip dysplasia and other medical concerns and will require a small fortune in professional grooming in order to maintain a healthy coat.”

The fact is that, as a whole these types of dogs require a huge commitment both physically and financially and are being so overbred that these designer dogs can often be found for free after people have given up on them. Some will be lucky enough to find loving homes that are all around prepared to meet their needs, some will find loving homes that have no idea what they are getting into and eventually the physical demands of a high energy dog or the financial obligation will be too much, some will end up in situations where they
are neglected because people are expecting this “best of both worlds” perfect dog and that just isn’t realistic and even a sound dog takes a lot of work to become a good, well trained family member. Like any other breed, with commitment, structure, good communication between handler and canine and time, they can be a great addition but as humans, we often fail them.

With all this in mind, I introduce Aria. She’s not our first doodle recently. Not even our first doodle this week. She is around 1 1/2-2 years old and it’s likely she has lived most of her life in a crate. At arrival, we smelled her before we saw her. Her hair was matted so severely it was nearly impossible to find skin except in the few spots that the mats had become so severe they had pulled away from her body and left sores. She was wet with urine and so matted around her rear end that f***s were caked into her hair. Her feet are covered in sores from the matting and urine scald. She is infested with parasites. It is suspected that she has Rickets from lack of nutrition. She only weighs 30 pounds, about 2/3 of what her weight should be.

It took nearly 3 hours to shave her. We are not groomers and she isn’t pretty but this is the first step to getting her healthy. She has seen a veterinarian, is on a nutritionally sound refeeding schedule and is already giving lots of kisses. One thing we can promise her is that all the things she knew before are behind her.

Aria was a stray. Whether she broke free or was turned loose, yesterday marked a turning point for this sweet girl. She will eventually be ready for a home but for now we are just loving her and preparing her for her forever family.
