Today we had a dress rehearsal for the rescheduled Moshiach's Donkey, LLC Equine Gestalt Coaching Open House next week. Two people came who can't come next week, and we had a good time despite the high winds and drizzle! The clouds were very dramatic. We're on again for Saturday, 10/23, 2 to 5 pm.

May 8 is World Donkey Day — a fitting date to celebrate an animal that owners say is the best mate you could ask for, even if they do act like unsupervised toddlers sometimes.

Who was Lilly? Maybe a kid-safe pony who belonged to a little girl who grew out of her and moved on to a "real horse"? A gorgeous racehorse that won thousands of dollars for a rich owner but sustained a career-ending injury? A fancy show horse whose abilities impressed her equestrian rider who eventually lost interest in the sport? A breeder's horse who outlived her usefulness? Or perhaps a donkey whose elderly owner could no longer care for her so their adult children disposed of her? At some point Lilly was cared about enough for someone to put her name on her halter. Her halter can't tell her story but it is guaranteed to be a sad one or her halter would never have ended up where it was.
When we pick up animals on kill lots they are put in halters that are not their own, grabbed from a huge supply piled up by a nightmarish loading ramp that brings them to the height of a semi trailer. As the animals are loaded on the slaughter truck, halters are removed. From that point on, they are treated as a group, herded wherever they are taken until their lives are cruelly brought to an end. Some of their halters left behind have child-themed prints. Some display embroidered names. Others are made of expensive leather or have special breakaway features. At the lot, all are gut-wrenchingly empty.
Halters carry stories, stories of human failure. Do children physically grow out of ponies? Do racehorses have injuries? Do owners lose interest? Do broodmares stop producing? Do people get too old to care for their animals? Of course. And some owners face financial or physical hardships and are forced into making changes. But no equine, not even one, should ever be taken to any auction anywhere for any reason, and no equine should ever end up on a kill lot. If you can't safely rehome your horse or donkey or mule and you've pursued every imaginable option and you're out of time, call a vet and humanely euthanize it. Don't think that is cruel. There is an overpopulation problem in this country and the animals pay a horrible price for human greed.
You can pretend you gave your animal a "fair chance" or a "happy ending" or a "good home" but unless you know for sure -- truly for sure, blindly and selfishly believing all is okay because you got what you wanted means absolutely nothing to Lilly and to thousands like her. Shame on us for causing this, for allowing it and for looking the other way so we can enjoy cute foals, make money and pursue hobbies. Lilly was a life. Take care of your animals and those of others in need, even if it means making a hard decision, asking for help to pay to euthanize, or, even better if you have the means, continuing to pay the expenses of the horse or donkey or mule you no longer want and providing what seems more and more rare these days -- a truly forever home for the life who is in your care. If you need help, let a rescue know. Let us know. We will do our best to help you. Lilly, words are cheap but we are so incredibly sorry.
