Ok as one of the major equipment suppliers here in the US I’m jumping into the dogwalk discussion. First, I have to say as a participant in the sport I like the dogwalk, I enjoy the training challenge and watching great teams with fast well trained dogs execute this obstacle is a highpoint as a spectator.
I think all this talk is perhaps making a bigger issue than what the facts would bear out, unfortunately we do not have actual statistics regarding frequency of mishaps as compared to the other risks in the sport. We are relying on anecdotal evidence with an occasional video. Should we consider changes to make things safer? Absolutely, but simply saying get rid of it is a slippery slope, I could make argument for removing nearly every obstacle in our sport if the criteria for removal is a documented mishap.
Here's my list of potential changes we could consider.
1. Make it wider. I do not believe we can make a transition in a safe manner, so even if wider would be better this is not a practical option. Expense to clubs, cooperation between different organizations, its just too large of a mountain to climb.
2. Lower the height. I’ve done the math and if we lower it to 3ft (1meter) impact when a dog falls is lowered by 13%, not a lot. I believe the larger benefit is the dogs ability to stay organized at the lower height in the event of a mishap. (they are more likely to land on their feet)
3. Tunnels under the dogwalk. Every dog I’ve trained has had to learn to cope with the distraction, so for the most part I believe this is a training issue. That being said, use of a tunnel by the judge to force a handler to move in a direction other than parallel to the dogwalk should not be allowed.
4. Approach to the Dogwalk. Nearly every mishap I’ve witnessed started on approach. A straight approach should be required.
5. Speed on approach. I have recently notice judges designing approaches at very high speeds, perhaps a jump and straight tunnel to the dogwalk. Ring size here the US often prohibits this and many handlers do not have access to a ring large enough. They’ll show up to a big event and see this for the first time. The higher speed only increases the risk. I believe this should be avoided.
6. Lastly here’s my outside the box idea. We just finished watching the Olympics, in gymnastics what do they put all around the equipment to help the gymnast stay safe? Padding! Why can’t we simply add padding on the ground along both sides of the dogwalk so that on the rare fall they have some protection. If it works for world class athletes why not our Dogs.

So Stefanie is one of our team members here at Clip and Go.
