While your toes & feet may be one of the first things to get cold, this is not a problem for your horse! There are no muscles below the knee, so the cells in the leg require less blood circulation. This means they lose less heat! ❄️

With only tendons, ligaments and bones supporting these lower limbs, this makes injuries in these areas harder to heal. They require specialized care to restore function and prevent further damage!

🌱 Fascia Relief: By relieving tension and improving circulation, fascia relief supports the body’s natural healing process.
🌱 Cryotherapy: This method helps reduce inflammation, boost blood flow, and speed up recovery by aiding cellular repair.

If your horse is dealing with a tendon or ligament injury, early intervention is crucial! Reach out to schedule a session & give your athlete the care they need to stay strong and sound.

Pretty yucky outside today! 🥶 Here are some tips to help with traction in these icy conditions! Be safe out there!

➡️ Whichever method you use be sure to test it with your own feet. Sometimes adding something on top of ice, like straw for example, actually makes it MORE slippery. Try not to use hay, straw or fresh shavings as they are more likely to slide across the surface rather then help with grip.

⚠️ HOWEVER if you do have a horse that is down in an icy area, a very thick pile of clean shavings can help them get on their feet!

Dealing with rain & just above freezing temps is hard enough; and even harder on donkeys! 🌧️ ❄️ 🥶 🐴

Many people think of donkeys as hardy, low-maintenance “small horses.” However, while they have similarities, donkeys are a completely different species and as such have a different physical, mental, and emotional make-up.

As the weather gets colder, it’s important to remember that donkeys are more sensitive to changes in temperature than their equine friends. They don’t grow a winter coat like horses and their hair has less water-shedding properties, so they require shelter from the elements (like a run-in shed or a waterproof blanket). Being stoic animals, they also won’t show signs of discomfort and hypothermia until they are very sick.

Remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed, and other health conditions, so be sure with your primary veterinarian to address any concerns or questions!

Remember that they also have different dietary requirements than horses as well! We would be happy to set up a nutrition consultation with you! 🐴🌿

Mane Mineral Metal Test & Calcium 🐴🌿

The mineral calcium is required for the maintenance and strength of bones and teeth, normal blood clotting ability, muscular contraction, and nerve conduction.

Even though the tissue calcium level is within the ideal range, its proper function within the biological system requires a homeostatic equilibrium with other nutritional co-factors, especially magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamin D. These co-factors should always be considered when evaluating calcium status.

Low tissue calcium is a normal physiological response to increased workloads and stress.

The following mineral factors may contribute to calcium deficiency:
• Low Calcium Intake
• Vitamin D Deficiency, Toxic Metal Accumulation
• Excessive Vitamin A
• High Sodium Intake
• High Phosphorus
• High Potassium Intake
• Increased Sympathetic Neuro-Endocrine Activity

The following factors in feeds/supplements may contribute to calcium deficiency:
• Wheat Bran
• Sunflower Meal
• Linseed
• Cottonseed Meal
• Safflower Meal
• Soybean Products
• Wheat Middlings
• Toula Yeast
• Corn
• Brewer's Yeast
• Peanut Meal
• Feather Meal
• Brewer's Grain
• Rice Bran
• Oats/Milo

The following metabolic factors can create low calcium:
• Stress (increased workload)
• Parathyroid Disturbance
• Vitamin D Deficiency*
• Excessive Thyroid Activity
• Excessive Adrenal Activity
• Excessive Vitamin A
• Toxic Metal Accumulation
• Poor Absorption (Digestive issues)
• Anti-inflammatory Steroids

*Vitamin D can be a cause of Calcium deficiency - this can come from lack of sunshine, excess vitamin A intake, and certain molds in feeds that can interfere with vitamin D absorption. Signs of vitamin d deficiency include: stiffness, fractures, swollen joints, stiff gait, bone deformities.

How to increase calcium:
• Increase alfalfa
• Molasses-free Beet Pulp
• Chia seed or flax seed
• Leafy greens from the garden
• Calcium Citrate, 2000mg/day for 4 weeks then 2x a week until retest

➡️ The best way to evaluate your horse is to test not guess! Message us to get more info on the Mane Mineral Metal Test! Testing available country-wide!

Did you know this technique for checking your horse’s hydration status? ⬇️

“The most reliable external parameter to monitor hydration is checking the mucous membranes for a slippery texture,” says Whalen. “Carefully reach under the upper lip to palpate along the gums and side of the mouth, noting whether the saliva feels slippery or tacky.” It is important to make a habit of performing this check even when your horse is in good health because it will give you a sense of what their normal is.”

💧 Maintenance water intake for a 1,000-pound horse can range from 6-12 gallons or more! 💧

Here’s a math problem the kids can work on! 📝 ❄️

Ⓜ️ Megacalories (Mcal) are a unit of measurement for the amount of energy a horse needs to maintain its body weight and activity level. The amount of Mcal a horse needs depends on its weight, activity level, and other factors.

🌾 Maintenance requirements:
• A 1,100 lb horse needs around 16.7 Mcal per day for average maintenance
• A 1,100 lb horse needs around 15.2 Mcal per day for minimum maintenance
• A 1,100 lb horse needs around 18.2 Mcal per day for elevated maintenance

🔀 Hay typically ranges from 0.76 to 0.94 Mcal/lb or higher of DE (Digestible Energy). Grass hay has lower DE while Legume hay is much higher in DE, averaging 1-1.2 Mcal/lb.

➡️ In simple terms, most horses should consume about 2% of their body weight in forage each day. Additional should be offered in colder weather to keep up with calories burned. Digesting forage is what keeps your horses “furnace” running!

❄️ The incoming weather this week is expected to be pretty brutal. Ensure your animals are prepared for it with these tips below from the UMN Equine Extension Program! This can also help with your hay planning needs for the year!

❇️ As always, we are always available for nutritional consultations—country wide! We also offer our Mane Mineral & Metal Test as well, to pinpoint exactly what your horse may be lacking in their diet!🤗🐴🌿
