How cold is too cold for your pet?

🌡️ Above 50°F: Most pets can safely enjoy outdoor time.
🌡️ 40-50°F: Keep an eye on your pet, especially smaller or short-haired breeds.
🌡️ 30-40°F: Limit outdoor time, and consider extra protection like coats or booties.
🌡️ 15-30°F: Potentially life-threatening cold for many pets, avoid prolonged outdoor activity.
🌡️ Below 15°F: All animals should be indoors, even those with heavy fur.

Thornton Animal Control Officers want to remind you that extreme weather can be dangerous and even deadly for pets. Our municipal code outlines the care that animals deserve and the consequences for neglect or cruelty.

⚠️ Neglect of an Animal (Sec. 6-28)
Neglect includes failing to provide enough food, water, proper shelter, or protection from the weather.

⚠️ Cruelty to Animals (Sec. 6-31)
Leaving an animal in extreme or unreasonable temperatures without adequate care, creating a serious risk of injury or death, is considered cruelty and carries serious penalties.

Violations of these codes can result in fines, impoundment of the animal, or jail time.

Tips to protect your pets during winter:
❄️ Always keep pets inside during extreme freezing temperatures.
❄️ Protect their paws with booties or a pet-safe balm to shield them from salt and ice.
❄️ Never leave pets alone in a cold car, it can be just as dangerous as a hot car.
❄️ Limit outdoor activities, especially for short-haired breeds.
❄️ After walks, check for ice, salt, or cracks on their paws and between toes.

Cold weather affects pets differently depending on their breed, size, and coat. When in doubt, keep them warm and safe indoors!

Aggravated Cruelty to an Animal Investigation

On Sunday, December 29th, 2024, our department received an animal cruelty call concerning 18-year-old Khalin Lovely, a Loveland man. Lovely was reported to have severely abused a family kitten.

Investigation, coupled with video evidence of the abuse, determined that Lovely had committed aggravated cruelty to an animal, per CRS 18-9-202(1.5)(b)(c). A probable cause arrest was immediately made on Lovely, and he was booked into the Larimer County Jail. Magistrate Sage issued a $100 cash bond.

Note: The charge, which is normally a class 6 felony, was enhanced to a class 4 felony due to the animal having serious bodily injury, causing it to be euthanized.

The purpose of this news release is to provide timely information to the public. The above charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. The details contained in this release are based on information available at the time of drafting. The Loveland Police Department‘s understanding of this incident may change as additional evidence is collected, analyzed, and reviewed.

The RMS Titanic not only carried human passengers, but also had twelve dogs on board. Among them were various breeds, including a French Bulldog, a Pekingese, a Fox Terrier, two Pomeranians and a Great Dane. These dogs were a symbol of the wealth and status of some of the passengers, but their fate on this fateful voyage was as tragic as that of the ship.

When the Titanic sank, the chaos on board led to difficult decisions. Of the twelve dogs, only three survived: a Pekingese and two Pomeranians. These smaller breeds were easier to hide and were probably smuggled onto the lifeboats, giving them a rare chance of survival.

One of the tragic stories of that night is that of Elizabeth Isham, a 50-year-old passenger whose devotion to her Great Dane was exemplary. When the Titanic sank, Isham was told that her Great Dane was too large to be placed on a lifeboat. Faced with this heartbreaking decision, she chose to stay with her dog instead of leaving him behind.

Days after the Titanic sank, Elizabeth Isham's body was found, still clinging to her beloved Great Dane.
