Thanks for such an awesome review! A lot of dog trainers go into the field because they love dogs but not people. However, I really love people and I love the clients I take on. Dog training is really a holistic endeavor working with family dynamics.

I’ve worked as a chaplain in healthcare for 10 years. I’ve supported people thru some of the worst moments in their lives - the sudden loss of a loved one or child. Terrible car accidents and emergencies. It changed me into a person that loves people. I love them because I have supported people that were stripped down to nothing. That lost everything in one day. Emerging from that experience helped me to see that we are all precious beings capable of so much love and pain.

I used to think people were criticizing me all the time. After a lot of spiritual work and therapy, I realized that I create my own reality and I am responsible for my perception of life and other people.

Fast forward to dog training. I love my clients. And it’s my job to see the best in them and their dogs even when they can’t see it. I will hold you to your highest self, and I hope you can do the same for me. This is just the best way to live. To put down the painful past and be present with people in this precious life that we have. Each moment is important because we don’t know how much time we have on this planet. Whether it’s meeting with friends, family or clients… it’s when we realize we are in a relationship with life itself reflected in every soul we meet. Dog. Person. Plant.

Working with Ruby a Xoloitzcuintle (Mexican hairless, but with hair). We went to the pub today because that’s where her owner sometimes struggles with her reactivity which seems to stem from guarding her. Ruby is learning how to chill and take her cues from her owner.

Working with Buffy and his owner in private lessons this week. Buffys main issue: he’s going a mile a minute all the time. Our main goal: to slow him down in everything he does. His owner was saying how difficult it would be to do this without the proper collars and training we’ve been using. Of course I agree 100%. And utilizing these tools, were able to tell Buffy to slow way down.

He’s also so food motivated, that food reward amps him up way too much. We often can’t use food reward with him because of this.

So, in just gently telling him where we need him to be, what pace we need him to walk at, and redirecting his attention onto us, were able to get them into a really nice headspace.

Buffy has been one of my favorite dogs I’ve worked with. Such a sweetheart!!!

Chair 🪑 sit/stay. 10 minutes. I set timer ⏱️. They have hold a sit. Those folding metal chairs work better because they can’t do a down on them.

It’s hard for dogs to hold a sit for more than 10-15 minutes, so don’t do it for longer than that.

This exercise is good for building impulse control.

Taking my dogs to work at the coffee shop with me today. They have to be chill and stay in a down. I use the prong and e-collar to re-enforce those commands. Without these collars I’d have very little power and they’d (especially Goji the exuberant black one) would be all over the place.

Dexter went home today! His owners did amazing with all of the protocol and recommendations and we saw a big breakthrough and shift today. Dexter came in for some severe leash reactivity. It was probably one of the most difficult cases I’ve worked through. But so glad to have the opportunity because I always learn a lot on these cases. I learned a lot about what to do, how to have more precise, timing, and how to teach this stuff to people in a practical way. And of course, compassion for myself and the owners and dog. To be a successful dog trainer you have to be able to teach your clients how to do the stuff you do. They have to replicate your results. That’s why I am to focus on clear, simple theory an ideology. When working with more severe cases, having a tighter structure in place is critical to seeing a transformation. Really proud of everyone and all of our progress, including Dexter! 👏

Night walk with Maple 🍁Sometimes dogs get more scared to walk at night so it was good practice to cruise around the neighborhood tonight. Maple’s confidence is improving on the walks. The ecollar is actually helping her confidence increase because it’s reminding her where I need her to be for her to feel more comfortable on the walk - this is the structured heel position. No pulling out in front or dragging behind. No marking or sniffing unless they’re on a break. When you teach them this they get into a nice groove of “follow-mode” and it cleans a lot of problematic behaviors up.

Maple is doing great in all areas. In jjst 2 days of training she’s listening better, and has calmed down quite a lot. When we work with collars that give us more leverage In addition to the training drills, we are able to get such a better stuff from our dogs. Super proud of this girl! 😻

Welcome Maple! 🍁 She’s doing a 5 day board & train with me this week and we’ll be working on jumping, basic obedience, politeness, duration work and e-collar conditioning. Her owners would like to be able to take her out more places but fear she’ll knock someone over with her exuberant jumping. She’s so excited to meet everyone which is an adorable quality, but I’m going to teach her how to bring it down a few notches.

What you’ll hear from most positive reinforcement, only dog trainers, and what you will read online. If you type it into Google regarding jumping is that you have to redirect the dog with treats. This doesn’t teach the dog to stop jumping. This will be a conversation I have with her a few times and then she will actually stop knowing that that behavior is not wanted in our pack. And then her owners will have to replicate those results. And then we will have a dog they feel comfortable, taking out whose quality of life will improve. That is the recipe I have accomplished countless times with these awesome methods I have learned from my amazing dog training teachers.

But holy cow what an enjoyable pitbull! Probably one of the sweetest dogs I’ve worked with so far. It’s fun to have her staying with me. 😍😍😍

From muzzled to unmuzzled in 30 minutes of meeting Casper. He came to work with me for pretty serious leash reactivity. After properly correcting him, I assessed he would now be fine without the muzzle with me keeping a close eye 👁️. He did great! We have another lesson tomorrow.
