Another great message from this great wildlife sanctuary. Letâs share our space with the wildlife around us.
With this week's storm and now the nice weather, many of us will be outside cleaning the yard. Please be mindful of baby wildlife that may or may not need our help! Many gray squirrels and songbirds are nesting in trees, many cottontails on the ground, and raccoons nest pretty much everywhere. Please look before cutting down trees or raking the yard so we can keep wildlife friends protected and keep them with Mom!
If you come across wildlife in need of help, please call or transport the critters to Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary so properly trained and licensed wildlife rehabilitators can care for them to release them back into the wild!
If you happen to find a nest of baby squirrels, please:
*Try to leave the nest alone so Mom can take care of the young
*If you cannot leave the nest there, please give Mom 48 hours to move the young. You can dissuade her by playing a radio, shine a light on the nest, or sprinkling urine-soaked kitty litter. The radio and light make it seem like there are humans there; the urine soaked kitty litter smells like a predator is near by. Make sure Mom has a way out and give her time and space to move the young overnight. Please do not pour ammonia around or near the nest.
*Do not feed the baby squirrels any milk or any formula or milk replacer. We may think we're helping, but milk made for humans or a predator (kittens and puppies) may cause bloat and diarrhea. Please do not feed the young wild animals anything!
*Call Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary about the situation as soon as possible. We can see if there is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator is closer to you if we are too far away. We can give you directions on how to bring the squirrels in to our licensed staff if the squirrels need to be brought in.
*Do not handle the young while you're attempting to allow Mom to move them. We do not want to rub Mom's scent off of the young. Wildlife also carry fleas and other external parasites!
*If you are cutting down trees or doing yard work or landscaping, please check around for nests of young before you start working! Giving wildlife space and time helps all of us!
As always, if you have any questions, please call Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary Animal Care at 920.391.3685-- and thank you for caring about wildlife!
And if you're out and about, please consider picking up a bottle of bleach or 2 or a bag of sweet potatoes or carrots for our animal care program! We truly appreciate everyone's donations and support of Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary!
