Kanga and I had an excellent session at Branch Brook Park very early this morning. Her improvement on self-control and overall confidence over the last couple weeks is wonderful.

Friends don’t let friends use Furminators.

Friends don’t let friends use Furminators.

A little PSA as I keep seeing these recommended on social media by influencers and in groups.

Do you have a furminator?

Throw it in the bin.🗑 🚮

"But I get so much hair out with it"

A furminator is a blade. I've attached a photo of a super short grooming blade next to the furminator blade to compare. The only reason you think it works so well and you get so much hair out is because it's actually cutting your dogs coat. It cuts the good hair, the top coat and leaves long lasting damage, you may not notice at first or ever but its definitely doing the damage and your pups coat will begin to get shorter and shorter, becoming more sparse.

I've not once, nor will I ever use a furminator on a clients dog and 100% do not recommend them. They belong in the bin.

Doodles need a bunch of regular grooming. Doodle breeders overall lie about this. I’m not anti-doodle. I own a Cockapoo, most doodles I know are cool dogs. The VAST majority of their breeders are not ethical.

Every purebred breeder I am friends with will move hell and high water to make sure a dog they bred isn’t sitting in a shelter. They are backed by literally an entire breed community to ensure those dogs aren’t left in a shelter or random rescue. Most breed rescues are run by RESPONSIBLE breeders to ensure dogs from the breed they love don’t sit in a shelter, even if they weren’t responsibly bred.

This is NOT the support doodle breeders provide.

Raya is hanging out doing her favorite thing, which is just chilling calmly next to a person. Don’t worry, she has comfy beds, but she often chooses the floor when she’s not napping in her open crate.

She is accepting applications to her permanent couch, ideally one with kids, because she LOVES kids. Raya also is great with other dogs, cats, has basic training, won’t pull you on leash, quiet and trustworthy loose in the house.

An 11mo American Bully up to date on shots until mid-October and also heartworm/flea/tick preventative. She will come with a contract that she has to be returned to me if anything doesn’t work out at any point. If you’re looking for an easy intro to bull breeds, Raya is your dog. Really she would fit in with just about any family and has excellent potential as a therapy dog. She doesn’t have sport/working potential, because she is too laid back for a serious competitor.

From a few years ago, but still true. Dogs are amazing and they deserve to be treated as dogs. So many of the issues I see are from people trying to make their dogs people. Changing that dynamic makes such a huge difference for the dog.

This is absolutely true. You can love your dog more than anything on the planet, you can tell your dog anything if you need to vent, but they are dogs.

Ultimately, treating them as dogs is what keeps them happy, healthy and sane. A dog isn’t a child. They do best when you work at making them the best dog they can be and finding activities that enrich them by allowing them to be DOGS.

Make your dog SHINE.

SGT. STUBBY
WAR DOG HERO!

Meet America's first war dog, a stray Pit Bull/Terrier mix, named Stubby.
He became Sgt. Stubby, was the most decorated war dog of World War I and
the only dog to be promoted to sergeant through combat.

One day he appeared at Yale Field in New Haven, Connecticut; while a group
of soldiers were training, stopping to make friends with soldiers as they
drilled. One soldier, Corporal Robert Conroy, developed a fondness for the
dog. He named him Stubby because of his short legs. When it became time
for the outfit to ship out, Conroy hid Stubby on board the troop ship. In
order to keep the dog, the private taught him to salute his commanding
officers warming their hearts to him.

Stubby served with the 102nd Infantry, 26th (Yankee) Division in the
trenches in France for 18 months and participated in four offensives and
18 battles. The loud noise of the bombs and gun fire did not bother him.
He was never content to stay in the trenches but went out and found
wounded soldiers.

Stubby entered combat on February 5, 1918 at Chemin Des Dames, north of
Soissons, and was under constant fire, day and night for over a month. In
April 1918, during a raid to take Schieprey, Stubby was wounded in the
foreleg by the retreating Germans throwing hand grenades. He was sent to
the rear for convalescence, and as he had done on the front was able to
improve morale. When he recovered from his wounds, Stubby returned to the
trenches.

After being gassed and nearly dying himself, Stubby learned to warn his
unit of poison gas attacks, continued to locate wounded soldiers in no
man's land, and since he could hear the whine of incoming artillery shells
before humans could, became very adept at letting his unit know when to
duck for cover.

He was solely responsible for capturing a German spy in the Argonne. The
spy made the mistake of speaking German to him when they were alone.
Stubby knew he was no ally and attacked him biting and holding on to him
by the seat of his pants until his comrades could secure him.

Following the retaking of Chateau-Thierry by the US, the thankful women of
the town made Stubby a chamois coat on which were pinned his many medals.

There is also a legend that while in Paris with Corporal Conroy, Stubby
saved a young girl from being hit by a car. At the end of the war, Conroy
smuggled Stubby home.

After returning home, Stubby became a celebrity and marched in, and
normally led, many parades across the country. He met Presidents Woodrow
Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren G. Harding. Starting in 1921, he
attended Georgetown University Law Center with Conroy, and became the
Georgetown Hoyas' team mascot. He would be given the football at halftime
and would nudge the ball around the field to the amusement of the fans.

Stubby was made a life member of the American Legion, the Red Cross, and
the YMCA. In 1921, the Humane Education Society awarded him a special gold
medal for service to his country. It was presented by General John
Pershing.

In 1926, Stubby died in Conroy's arms. His remains are featured in The
Price of Freedom: Americans at War exhibit at the Smithsonian. Stubby was
honored with a brick in the Walk of Honor at the United States World War I
monument, Liberty Memorial, in Kansas City at a ceremony held on Armistice
Day, November 11, 2006.
Have a beautifully blessed weekend and Memorial Day

Excellent words from Linda Kaim. Just because your dog isn’t a show dog or a sport dog doesn’t mean they live a life without a need for good training.

A well-trained dog makes life easier, safer, and less stressful for everyone.

Plus you can have so much more fun when you know you can bring your dog out without worrying about how they’re going to misbehave or how they’re going to react to guests when you want to throw a party.

The simplest and best way to avoid injury while walking your dog is training. The only time I’ve sustained an injury while walking a dog is because I tripped on a busted up sidewalk. Thanks to training, the dog didn’t try to use this moment to take off either.

This isn’t surprising at all. My dog Selena can immediately tell if I’m stressed, even if she’s not directly interacting with me. So can Sir Little Man Linus.

In an experiment, dogs were surprisingly accurate in detecting sweat and breath samples from people who were stressed.
