Cell Dogs

Cell Dogs Cell Dogs provides second chances for shelter dogs and incarcerated individuals. Each partner plays in important role in the success of our program.

Cells Dogs is making a difference in our local community by rescuing dogs, teaching marketable skills to those incarcerated and changing the lives of those individuals whom adopt our dogs giving them a loving home. Our Cell Dog training programs are community collaborative efforts between ourselves, local shelter and rescue groups and the participating correctional facility for both adults and ju

venile offenders. The Basic Obedience Training Program is a specialized opportunity which includes an intensive 4 week Lecture/Demo program for the incarcerated program participants, followed by an 8 to 10 week hands on training with the selected shelter dogs. Once the dogs have completed half of their prescribed training curriculum, we identify those who appear ideally suited for an Advanced Training Program. The dogs not selected for advanced training, celebrate their graduation by moving to their fur-ever homes with our pre-selected adopters. Those dogs identified for advanced training, begin a customized program to become service dogs for children afflicted with Autism Spectrum Disorder and for those with mobility disabilities. This program may take anywhere from 4 to 6 months with one of our contract trainers. Once the dog's training is complete, a 2 week team training is required for placement. 🐾❤Adopter check-in from Franny's forever home addressed to her trainers:

"The two weeks we have had Franny at our house have been a wonderful delight. She is very sweet, very intelligent, and has a sense of humor.

The two-week period has allowed us to see her reactions to potentially stressful situations (fireworks, postman, gardener, dogs next door, being left alone in her crate for a few hours, going on rides in the car). This has given us the confidence that she will not be a trouble-making dog like some of the golden retrievers we had previously. And, it has shown us that the measures we took previously to secure the house, the car, and the back yard for big dogs work as effectively, if not better than, for Franny-size dogs.

The KONG peanut butter dispenser device has worked very well in keeping her calm and not bored when locked in her crate in the laundry room for hours when we were away. Also, she gets an evening snack after she comes back from her nightly pre-bedtime walk, and after successfully doing two or more of the tricks she learned at Cell Dogs Academy.

She loves to snuggle in our beds or on our living room couches. Occasionally, She will put on a show for us, where she grabs one of her toys, and proceeds to run around the house at top speed, then engaging the toy in a mock fight-to-the-death brawl. She then brings the "mortally-wounded" toy to one of us for a tug-of-war, keep-away game, where she makes up the rules.

Thanks to all who played a role in us becoming Franny's adopted parents!"

These toys were hand-made by Disney VoluntEARS in collaboration with the COMPASS Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month back in May. COMPASS is the AAPI BERG at the Disneyland Resort.

Thank you for their continued and thoughtful support! The toys will be enjoyed by many canine teams to come. ❤🐾

Meet Tahoe, the service dog!

Getting the gift of a service dog is life changing. 🦮✨

Our service dog program is thriving as we continue to transform wayward shelter dogs into amazing working companions for veterans and first responders in need. The generosity of donors enables us to provide a service dog, at a significantly reduced cost, to a qualifying recipient.

Would you, or someone you know benefit from a service dog? Please share this post, as Tahoe is ready for placement.

Beau and Brea are adorable, young terrier mixes. They're wire haired huddles of fun, who love to cuddle and play 'catch me'. Super sweet.

Merlin is a yellow lab, who loves his people and the company of his buddies.

Update on one of our graduates 🐾❤:

This pup graduated from the men’s program at the Musick jail facility 11 ½ years ago. He was a little over a year old, and came from the OC shelter. Baily (Peanut) was a feisty little guy and told the trainers who was the boss, certainly not them. 🐾

"He's now 12 years old and still walking 4 miles per day, 7 days a week. He's been a very sweet, wonderful dog. He thinks he's the protector of all things. People and dogs. I absolutely love him." K.C.

The OC Probation program is at the halfway point! Pebbles is now looking for a forever home. Please share this post to find her perfect match.🐾❤

✨Pebbles✨ is a lovely girl, about 2 years old, she weighs 18 pounds (and is spayed). She's responded extremely well to training and is making terrific progress. She establishes strong bonds with 'her people', and will take instruction very well. She is motivated by treats, so easy to train but she loves to be held and cuddled, this is her favorite thing.

She would be best suited to a household with adults, or older children. She gets along well with her current pack in the program, however, she'd probably prefer to be the only pup in the household, so she can get all the attention.

Rosie, Pebbles and Callie entered the OC Probation youth program a few weeks ago. These 3 landed here from many different backgrounds but they are blending well, and getting the much needed time to relax, socialize, and learn how to be a best friend.

Rosie, the young lab from a crowded shelter, is slowly gaining confidence, and enjoying learning more about the world. She is very calm and sweet and is beginning to respond to commands and to work for food. Well on her way to become a perfect pup!

Pebbles (a sweet beagle mix, approx. 2 years old) loves nothing more than to be cuddled and sitting on someone’s knee getting lots of attention. She has a fun side too, and enjoys playing and chasing the other dogs. She is a quick learner and will work for treats! She would thrive in an adult household or where the children are older than 8 yrs.

Callie is already spoken for but Rosie and Pebbles are looking for their forever homes. If you are interested, please apply here: https://www.celldogs.org/adopt-a-dog/

Our Story

In 2007, we launched one of the nation’s first juvenile ward programs at the Heman G. Stark Youth Correctional Facility in Chino, CA. The program at OC Probation started in 2009 and was the first in Orange County, CA involving juvenile ward trainers. Our program at James A. Musick Facility has been active since 2013.

Our program dogs are rescues from local animal shelters. Once a group of dogs is selected, we bring them into incarceration facilities where designated trainers care for the dogs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Before teaming up with one of the dogs, program trainers first participate in four weeks of lecture classes. Then, over the next 8–10 weeks, they teach their canine students good manners and basic obedience. Upon successful completion, each dog is adopted into a loving home.

During classes, some dogs exhibit special aptitude, and these canines receive advanced training afterwards in order to become working service dogs.

We significantly impact local communities in a number of ways. Since its inception, Cell Dogs has successfully rescued, trained, and placed over 300 dogs into new homes. The program goes much further than simply reducing euthanasia rates and saving costs at local shelters: it transforms all program participants, providing them (and the dogs they train) with a valuable second chance at leading productive and responsible lives. Dog adoption is also made easier as people looking for a shelter pup are not always equipped to handle an untrained or unsocialized animal. For additional details and application information please visit our website: www.celldogs.org
