Good afternoon. We are hosting a Rattlesnake aversion clinic at our place on 06/19/23. This is a great opportunity to have your dog exposed to nope-ropes safely by experienced trainers in an effort to teach the dog to stay away from them. We still have afternoon spots available. Contact me via messenger or text 530-205-5536 to reserve your spot.

Good evening. It's been awhile so I wanted to give an update on what's happening with Essential K9. My wonderful wife Jenn started working with me full time, it's been great having an extra set of hands and someone to bounce ideas off of. We have relocated back to Nevada County on 10 acres so we have a lot more room for the dogs (we can still service dogs from many NorCal areas). We are focusing primarily on board & train with some boarding only available through the end of the year. If you're heading out of town for the holiday and want a safe, comfortable place for your pup to hang out or you want a tune up on their obedience while you're gone give us a call or shoot me a message and we'll get you set up. I am hoping to begin some scent work classes soon, so if you're interested in giving your dog a good mental workout and building your bond with your dog let me know.

It never hurts to go back to basics to make sure your foundation skills are solid. These 2 pups are in my advanced scent work class & did great last night working on their TFR with distractions. I had the handlers focus a lot on watching their partners body language and the obvious differences between when they were on target odor vs distractors.

For anyone interested in getting your pup in to scent work or for those who already have some experience and just want to brush up or are looking for a challenge. I will be starting up some new classes at All About Dogs in Grass Valley. I'm very excited to be using this facility. It means we will have heat in the winter and AC in the summer!! The facility is a great place to have classes in a controlled environment.
Intro to Scent Work will begin on 08/03/21 from 6-8pm/ 3 week class/ $200
Advanced scent work will begin on 08/06/21 from 6-8pm/ 3 week class/ $200
Keep an eye on their website for the sign up sheet. Space is limited to 8 dogs per class.
Hope to see you there!

Hey scent work people, I've got some great news. I met with the owners of All About Dogs in Grass Valley today and it looks like we'll have a facility to train in for the upcoming classes...a facility with AC and heat! No more sweating it out or freezing our butts off. I'll post a schedule of classes as soon as we work out the details, but they'll most likely be Thurs thru Sat. Keep an eye on the page here for updates real soon.

Any of my clients or friends who would like to get their dog(s) in a rattle snake aversion clinic next week let me know. It's a great program to help keep your pup safe while out hiking, camping or just messing around in the yard.
It'll be held next week in the Nevada City area, contact me for additional info. ASAP.

The new Primo pads fit the crates perfectly! Now the monsters have a comfortable ride and they won't be destroying the pads. They're also real easy to clean which helps when the floppy eared dogs decide to lay down in every mud puddle they find.

Our Story

I've been a search and rescue K9 handler for the last 8 years and was an animal control officer for 5 years. I decided to get my K9 training certification through Animal Behavior College to pursue obedience training and behavior modification for the general public. Between my fiance (Jennifer) and I we have 3 Golden Retrievers who are trained to locate live humans and human remains. Recently Jennifer and I started a business in which we use highly trained K9’s to locate leaks in natural gas and oil pipelines and narcotics detection for private industry. This brought 2 more members to our pack. Paco and Nala are both very high drive Belgian Malinoi’s that bring a who new level of crazy to our house! I work with dogs daily whether it’s my own, with other handlers in SAR training, or with family and friends. I enjoy seeing someone develop a good relationship with their dog, one where they understand better what the dog is trying to express to them and where they can better communicate to their dog what they want. Through proper training, one can develop a better bond with their dog which in turn leads to a more trusting and peaceful pack. I focus on positive reinforcement of proper behaviors and socialization. Typically beginning with one on one training in order to minimize distractions. Groups can be accommodated if you have some friends that all want to train together. My training technique teaches dogs that obedience and other desirable behaviors, such as not jumping on people, earn them things they like such as treats, toys, petting and praise. This type of training creates a dog whose primary motivation is based on earning a reward as opposed to avoiding a punishment. Additionally, it helps build a stronger bond and greater degree of trust with your dog. My goal is to teach you to look at your dog as an individual and use the things they like as a way of rewarding them whenever they do something you like. This will motivate you and your dog without causing confusion or stress—and it’s a lot of fun, too. For a dog, good behavior buys freedom. The more a dog is well-behaved by society standards, the more opportunities you and your dog will have together.

In addition to dog training I am partnering up with Critter Care on the Divide to provide dog walking, dog/pet sitting, and feeding of other animals while you are out of town. Whether it’s just a brief drop in to feed and a quick walk or you’re going on vacation and need all your critters cared for we can accommodate your needs.

We will also be providing beginning nose work classes which is a great way to build the bond with your dog. You’ll also get to know how to read their body language better, and provide both mental and physical stimulation for your pup all while they get to do something most dogs love to do-use their nose. Almost any dog can participate young or old. Even dog reactive dogs since only one dog searches at a time. Contact me for further details.
