I was recently honored to win the Pet Professional Guild's scent event writing competition for my article on the benefits of sniffing and how I incorporate scent activities into Sprig's everyday life. While Sprig and I do formal scentwork, any dog can benefit from scent games and the opportunity to sniff!

Congratulations to Kris Whipple! This post won first prize in the 2022 scent event writing competition. Of all the canine behaviors that I teach, calm is the most valuable. Calm dogs are less likely to bark, jump, mouth, lunge, pull or engage in other challenging behaviors that come with overexc ...

While most National Parks limit dogs on trails, Mammoth Cave is a rare exception! Because the resource being protected (the world's longest cave system!) is underground, leashed dogs are allowed on all of the Park's 18 miles of surface trails! This, along with the Park's beauty and fascinating natural and human history, made up for the horrendous thunderstorm our last night. Our tent's first trial by fire!

Our next stop was Great Smokey Mountain National Park. The park is huge, covering two states. It's also incredibly beautiful with scenery worthy of a Sierra Club Calendar around every turn. While dogs are restricted from most areas, they are allowed on roads, in campgrounds, and picnic areas, as well as the Gatlinburg and Oconaluftee River trails, providing us with plenty to do during our visit. Sprig loved wading in the stream near our campsite at Cades Cove and found the deer and wild turkey that visited, pretty exciting too! 😊 We spent our days sightseeing and hiking (including the Gatlinburg Trail) and despite the dog restrictions, we had a fantastic time. Truly a 5+/5 experience! 😊

We loved our stay at Conagree National Park. While many national parks do not allow dogs on their trails, most of Conagree's beautiful forest trails are dog-friendly!

Our next stop was another one of our favorite dog- friendly towns- Ashville, N.C., including our two favorite Ashville destinations- the NC Arboretum and The Biltmore. Both places are a combination of formal gardens and natural trails, dog-friendly, and amazing! ! Between the spring grass, wildflowers, bulbs, azaleas and dogwood, we had a fantastic time! The azalea trails at both gardens were our favorites and after rolling in the soft spring rye grass, "splooting" on hillsides and splashing in clear, alligator-free streams and hiked the hiked the down the beautiful azalea trail to the Bass Pond at The Biltmore, Sprig clearly thought he was in heaven. While we skipped the mansion tour this time (since we had just toured itv in December) I highly recommend it, especially around the Holidays! Just note that dogs are not allowed inside the building's at The Biltmore or The Arboretum. To solve this at the Biltmore we booked those in our group on two different mansion tours and "dog-swapped" in between, Really I can't say enough good things about Ashville and the Biltmore in particular.. It gets top marks from all of us!"After three days, But after 3 days itv was time to head to our next camping experience, N. Carolina's Conagree National Park.

The first stop on our journey was Skidaway State Park, just 20 minutes from Savannah GA. Between hiking the trails at Skidaway, walking the riverfront and squares downtown and playing ball in Forsyth Park, there was plenty to do and a great way to start our adventure!

While COVID 19 has prevented me from doing canine massage, it has allowed me to spend a lot more time to participate in activities like dog parkour with my pup Sprig!

Parkour is a great way to increase your dog's fitness, strength and confidence and most importantly, have fun together! Sprig is only the second Cardigan Corgi to earn a title with the International Dog Parkour Assoc. as well as the youngest so I'm super proud of him. The best part though, is that he thinks it's a blast!
