Sweet Leah. This young dog has had a tough life until now. She and her sister Gracie came in months ago. Leah (and Gracie) were so shut down, barely lifting their heads off the ground and shaking in fear whenever anyone was nearby. We have no idea of the trauma they suffered, but every day they get a bit braver and are ready to find their forever homes.

Leah is a hound mix. She’s one-year old and is of medium size, weighing about 30 lbs. She has a beautiful reddish colored coat with long legs. Her eyes are penetrating and dark, rimmed in eyeliner, and her ears show that she might have some beagle in her. For months volunteers and staff have been working with the sisters to overcome their fear. One special volunteer has worked wonders, getting Leah into the yard where she loves the sunshine and rolling in the grass. Leah wants nothing more than to belong and to feel wanted and safe. She follows this volunteer around and shows what a great dog she is. Leah is so sweet. She has never ever been aggressive in her fear. She is so gentle. Leah is learning to walk on a leash. She’ll do best with a fenced yard so she can be outside safely. She might enjoy another dog in the home to give her confidence and show her the way. Leah loves her sister Gracie, but they can be separated. We work with them independently, but they also get yard time to play together. We’re trying to find the right balance to help them get adopted. A home environment would do wonders for them. Leah would do best in a family with older kids or a person who works from home. A quiet home with infinite patience and kindness to help her continue her journey of overcoming her past. She will bond hard and be the dog of a lifetime. She is such a gem. If interested in welcoming Leah to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org.
Please email our shelter ([email protected]) or call our shelter at 706-865-4135 and leave a message to make sure we received your application.

Mel is thriving in her home. This beautiful girl was nearly lost to us due to overcrowding at a high kill shelter. Thankfully, we pulled her and she's been adopted by the most wonderful family. Adoption saves lives. Shelters are so overcrowded. Mel is one of the lucky ones who made it out. Please always adopt. So many incredible dogs like Mel are waiting for you. Happy pupdate, Mel!

Beautiful Gracie. What trauma and abuse did she endure until she and her sister Leah came into our shelter? These two young pups were so shut down when they arrived. They would barely get off the ground, they shook in fear and hid behind each other hoping not to be noticed. We noticed them and we’ve been working hard to build their trust and confidence. Gracie and Leah came in months ago. After the work of volunteers and staff, Gracie is ready to find her forever home.

Gracie is a beautiful hound mix. She is 1.2 years old. She has a pretty, tan colored coat with white. Her eyes still show her uncertainty, but she’s trying hard to be brave. She is medium in size, weighing 30 lbs. For months volunteers and staff have been working with the sisters to overcome their fear. One special volunteer has worked miracles, getting Gracie into the yard where she loves the sunshine and rolling in the grass. Gracie wants nothing more than to belong and to feel wanted and safe. She follows this volunteer around and shows what a great dog she is. Gracie is incredibly sweet. She has never ever been aggressive in her fear. She is so gentle and very submissive. Gracie is learning to walk on a leash. She’ll do best with a fenced yard so she can be outside safely. She might enjoy another dog in the home to give her confidence and show her the way. Gracie and Leah love each other, but they can be separated. We work with them independently, but they also get yard time to play together. We’re trying to find the right balance to help them get adopted. A home environment would do wonders for Gracie. Gracie would do best in a family with older kids or a person who works from home. A quiet home with infinite patience and kindness to help her continue her journey of overcoming her past. She will bond hard and be the dog of a lifetime. She is such a gem. If interested in welcoming Gracie to your heart and home, please submit an application online at: www.charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org.
Please email our shelter ([email protected]) or call our shelter at 706-865-4135 and leave a message to make sure we received your application. All adopters must complete an approval process which involves a reference check with current/recent vet and a brief home visit if located in the immediate area. We do permit out-of-state adoptions. Adopters MUST come to the shelter to transport their new family member home. We do not ship, nor do we transport them to their new homes. Adoption policies and application procedures are detailed at the shelter website: http://charlessmithgallhumanesociety.org/ under tab All Adoptable Animals.
Charles Smithgall Humane Society (CSHS) is a No kill shelter. Animals in our care remain safe with us until adopted. Help us welcome Buffy to our no-kill shelter. Buffy was on the dreaded euth list and we rescued her just in time. She is just a baby at seven months old. She is smallish in size at 31 lbs. Buffy is as cute as they come with ears that extend into another zip code and eyes filled with hope and love. She is a sweet girl, dog friendly and ready to find her forever home. We're still learning about her, but we love what we know already. Put your paws together and let's give this sweet angel a warm welcome.

Happy pupdate from Bucky (l) & Molly (r) w/their human sister. “Bucky (who was supposed to be our small no shedding dog) at 85 pounds that we adopted a year ago October and Molly who we adopted in June. They are sooo perfect!” These pups are thriving and so loved by their family, also one of our uber volunteers. We are grateful to everything this family, especially Sherry, has done for the shelter, but most importantly for Bucky and Molly!!

Sweet Lila (l) is doing great. She suffers from seizures but her pawrents love her and have worked with their vet to find the right solution to control them. Lila is a happy girl. She loves car rides and walkies. And she loves her housemate and pawrents! She is adorable. We are so grateful to her family for their patience and love to help Lila live her best life ever! Adoption saves lives.

With the cold weather, here are some good reminders. Please make sure your pets are safe and warm. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Cats and kittens may seek warmth in your car, please knock on the hood or honk your horn before starting up.

The next seven days will bring overnight/early morning temperatures in the lower 20s to lower 30s (with the exception of Sunday night into Monday morning). Be sure to:
🐶 ensure pets have a warm, dry shelter
💧 allow pipes and faucets to drip if necessary
🪴 bring cold-sensitive plants indoors or cover them
🫂 check on loved ones and neighbors, especially the elderly

A great big Thank You! Our heater went out and our pups were chilly. But thanks to Dan Price of Dan Price Heating & Air, Inc., he gave us a super reasonable estimate (deal) and installed a new heater for us! The warmth is on and the pups are happy, making us very happy!! Thank you Dan! You have a big heart and are so good to our shelter. Folks if you need heating and cooling assistance, give Dan a call.

Hello 2025! We have a wonderful update about sweet Poppy! Poppy was a shy young pup when she came in wanting nothing more than people to sit with her and give her comfort. Once scared and alone, Poppy is thriving. Her adoption was a beautiful day. Years later Poppy and her Mom are more bonded than ever.

“My name is Laura and adopted my sweet Poppy from Charles Smithgall humane society back in 2021. As the new year begins I think about how grateful I am to all of you for taking such great care of her before we were meant to cross paths. She means everything to me and without your team she might not be here today. Thank you all for all of your hard work. I cannot put into words how much it means to me. Poppy asked me to send her thanks as well seeing as typing is not her strong suit. I think she repays the kindness you all showed her everyday when she shares love with the world. Hoping everyone has a happy, healthy, and plentiful 2025.

Laura & Poppy”

We love these updates. Adoption saves lives. ❤️🐶
